Really fascinating presentation. I never thought to look into the origins of the shipping container.

For the record, just in time delivery was always a massive pain in the ass that stressed out everyone in the place I worked. Great when running as planned but things have a way of not cooperating as such.

To think, we might not have ever adopted the container if it weren't for alcoholics. I always find it amazing that many things like this (which seem so obvious after the fact) were only developed in the last century. Great video.

Wait until you find out why the VCR surpassed the superior quality Betamax. It concerns gentlemans personal time video rentals...
@johnbelli9390
@johnbelli9390 4 года назад
@@Strettger That's actually a myth. It was the recording time. Can't record, for example, the football game on a beta unless you're there to swap tapes-in which case, why are you recording it-or you have 2 so you can divide it across 2 tapes.
@davidh.4944
@davidh.4944 4 года назад
@@johnbelli9390 Yes, convenience and cost usually trumps quality, as long as the alternative is perceived as being _good enough_ . I was a teenager during the format war, and I remember recognizing almost immediately that betamax just wouldn't cut it for general use, despite it's better video quality. The killer feature of VCRs when they first came out was not viewing pre-recorded content, but capturing tv broadcasts for later viewing. That made VHS' extended recording length extremely important at a time when the cost of an individual tape was painfully high. 6 hours at extended play meant you could catch a whole weeks' worth of sitcoms on one tape. The broader manufacturer support of the VHS consortium also helped, allowing for more, more varied, and cheaper machines than Sony's walled garden. Cheaper machines, cheaper per-hour tapes. It was a no-brainer.

I'm late to this party but I could hardly 'contain' my excitement! 30 years ago I was working at a place where they were trying to develop the system that could self guide the twistlocks into the container fittings using cameras

Thank you, dear Britisher for your content. I have been regularly watching RU-vid for almost 10 years. I have over 200 channels I have been subscribed to for years. And you are, without doubt, one of the best I have had the pleasure to listen to. Your formal cadence, your soft tone, your linguistic flexibility, and beautiful eloquence makes listening to your content a dream. Thank you very much, and have a lovely day.

In 1969, I sailed on the Blue Funnel Line vessel - 'Pyrrus' - steam turbine, 20 knots, from Liverpool to Singapore via Cape Town, then onto Bangkok and Kobe. It was a three month round trip and scheduled. The schedule was pretty tight, to within a day or two. The cargo was loaded by dockers. I remember, as a young man, the peculiarity of seeing the enlarged hand of dockers in Liverpool, who used a grappling hook as their tool of the trade, to move bales or anything else that could be hooked. Many thanks for the trip down memory lane.

If I remember correctly there was a point where Britain had effectively two shipping container standards. One was McLean's and the other was created by a railway company (can't remember if it was one of the big four or BR). You can still see the other standard on some older railway container wagons which have two different stacking holes at both ends of the wagon.
@johnbelli9390
@johnbelli9390 4 года назад
Are you sure that's what it's for? There are over-length (45') and over-height (9.5') containers. Or are you talking about width?
@mezzmainia
@mezzmainia 4 года назад
I think it was partly the width and partly to do with the way they were connected but I honestly can't remember. The more I think about it the less certain I am about the whole thing.

Thank goodness for this man’s innovation. I lived through many dockers’ strikes in the 1970s. Whenever I saw the dockers’ union leaders being interviewed on TV, they always struck me as stubborn shysters who would stop progress whenever they could. As for the folk in this comments section asking “think about the jobs he destroyed”, you can only say that most of these people are now working in different jobs.

This "oh, we lose jobs" claim has never struck me as intelligent or valid. In reality, needing less work for a task means that time is now free to pursue other goals.

Interesting video. At work I use a tool called Docker, which “containerizes” applications. Their logo is a whale carrying shipping containers. For some reason I’d never made the connection between the name Docker, and the word docker as in “worker at a dock”.

The Idea of the "container" is not the amazing part, as you point out, it had been tried by so train companies. The truly amazing part of this concept and showing how brilliant Malcom McLean really was, is getting it to work and more important, getting the industry to accept, the concept.

Juan Gonzalez - Oh, there was a great deal. They could see that this would do away with most of them. But then the march of technology and all that. The capacity of old fashioned ports had reached its limits. If one wanted more trade, one somehow needed to adopt a new method.

Nothing centralized control of an economy can do comes close to the innovations of the free market. I feel you've outdone AA in demonstrating this through a simple, powerful example. Austrian economics seeks to explain the market as it is, not to dictate how it should be unlike Marxists, Keynesians, and Friedmanites, thank you sir.

This is what the transport industry needs moving into EV's and self driving cars. Decentralized power production. Standardized batteries. To recharge you can plug in or go to a fuel station and have a full battery installed. If you are going 20Km to work all week why do you need to haul around a ton of batteries. Going for a road trip install a larger battery. Roads also need an electrified rail to provide power so cars are not using battery on main roads and freeways. So many other things to point out but you get the idea. Sensors and triggers everything needs them for self driving not just the cars.
@blunderingfool
@blunderingfool 4 года назад
I don't see people turning even one sixteenth of roads into what is effectively a railroad, since you probably wouldn't be allowed to drive regular cars on these electrified logistics roads.
