@@WaterShowsProd It's an English ethnologist who named the whole archipelago Indonesia in 1850 (including non-Dutch isles). He proposed the word Malayunesia as well but it hasn't been used by the academic circles. Indonesian nationalist groups adopted that name around 1900 when president Soekarno was a newborn baby.

The name Timor, means East in Malay/Indonesian, first used by Majapahit, because the island is located on the east of their empire. The latter east is named such because the country is located on the eastern side of Timor island. The western part is still ruled by Indonesia.
Nice video. Even more fascinating is Namibia's pan handle. The Caprivi Strip, named after a German politician (I believe his was the prime minister) Walter von Caprivi. And nobody ever mentions it ^^
Kind of correct: the Caprivi Strip was named after the Chancellor of Germany from 1890 to 1894. In the politics of German-speaking countries, "chancellor" is usually used to refer to a head of government similarly to a prime minister, so I would understand the mistake. He's not the only living person to name a country. There was an unclaimed bit of land in Europe until 2015 when some activist found that it's unclaimed and claimed it for himself and noone stopped him. It's actually quite funny story, more info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberland
After the UN accept the name people who where living in Namibia they were not allowed mention that name otherwise you will land yourself in jail. I only came to know that in name in 1990.
Sounds funny that the currently ruling party of Namibia uses the country's old name (or label) from before it's independence, especially as the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) played a role in Namibia's independence. Apparently, the "SWA" part was too deeply ingrained into the name of the organization for it to change, so the ruling party of Namibia still uses it's home countries old name. There must a person that have named South Sudan too, but it's of course more a geographical area, also because even Sudan is an old name for the Sahel.
Zaire is good. South Sudan => Dinkanuhr ( people of Nile river) CAR=> Zande (former kingdom that exsisted within the territory) South Africa => Amandla (the battle cry of the anti apartheid movement meaning power) Ivory Coast => Gyaman (former kingdom's name of the eastern half of the country before european colonization.)
What I know is Namibia was a name that lived for a long time but Namibians where getting killed for mantioning this name so when Namibia became independent they decided to name it Namibia that's what I know
This is why I could never be a time traveler. I'd slip up and call that place Namibia in like 1920 amd cause a butterfly effect that would lead to the Soviet Union launching Nuclear missiles after mistaking 99 balloons floating towards East Germany to be a nuclear attack by the United States. It would be tragic.
Actually it was a Briton who first used the term Indonesia, as a geographical reference, but The Dutch refused to. When Indonesians rallied for independence they chose this name.
