My older brother tried to buy am original 1944 July wound badge at auction. However he came up a little short. He was willing to dish out a good amount but didn't happen. However I do have now 123 German combat Badges since 1985! All authentic and verified in the huge books on badges.

Totally agree! Our multicultural TV station (SBS Australia) showed this over two nights about 15 years ago. The execution/suicide portion at the end is chilling. The Berlin city tour bus I was on (2010) passed the street where the executions occurred and the memorial was pointed out. I really like Tom Cruise movies but this version of Operation Valkyrie is so much better for the detail & length. Another fantastic Sebastian Koch film is Speer Und Er (2005) where he plays Albert Speer.

Love to see more reviews like these, Johnny. Keep it up. I'd be down for a comparison between this and the Cruise one on the main channel or wherever.

Wasn't there also a vintage 1950's, b&w German-made film about the Valkyrie plot? I've never seen it except in snippets.

Hi, if I may make a suggestion, I would be interested in military book reviews as an extension to films. An excellent book by a German Eastern Front soldier who arrives at the end of Stalingrad is Blood Red Snow by Gunter K. Koschorrek. It is an autobiography of a young man who survives through the final years including the final Soviet push to Berlin. I listened to it on Audible and really enjoyed the different perspective. Just a thought, probably too difficult for RU-vid.

I thought it was funny that Hardy Kruger's son was in this film. Good actor in the vein of Thomas Kretschmann.

I think an alternate history story about civil war breaking out in Nazi Germany in 1944 would be interesting.
@aaronjohn6586
@aaronjohn6586 Год назад
1 of the biggest what ifs of history is could this plan have succeeded if Hitler had died? So, many things had to go right all at the same time mainly the S.S. being held in check, the regular army being pushed aside and civilians not responding. Their aim was to preserve Germany from further onslaught and destruction. But they presumed with Hitler gone, the Allies would be amenable to peace. I cannot imagine the Soviets stopping nor the western allies until they reached Berlin. I think it just shows the desperation they felt.
@JohnnyJohnsonHistory
@JohnnyJohnsonHistory Год назад
Yah the allies wanted unconditional surrender at this point. Hard to say if a solution could have been reached. Hitler being left alive arguable did speed up the end of the war. He was making terrible decisions and overriding all his generals at this point.
@douglassun8456
@douglassun8456 Год назад
@@JohnnyJohnsonHistory Yes, the problem in the end was that the Allies didn't trust the Valkyrie plotters and would have insisted on unconditional surrender even if they had succeeded. The Strategy & Tactics article that accompanied Jim Dunnigan's funky "Plot of Assassinate Hitler" game argues - plausibly, I think - that the German people would have blamed the ultimate German defeat on the successor government more than on the Nazis, which would have made the postwar rehabilitation of Germany more difficult.

Stauffenberg and his co-conspirators were not exactly democrats. I don't know how the films portray them, but they wanted to make peace with the allies sure, but also to keep most of their conquered territories. And if my memory serves they wanted a Germany run by the military.
@JohnnyJohnsonHistory

The death of Hitler would have been the greatest thing for Germany. Imagine the lives saved, the less power and influence that Soviet Russia would have had if the war ceased even in December of 1944.
