The Manchester house part 4/4 | Second fixing & testing. (53)

Part two of the job I started in early 2020 (before the world went a little messy)
In this video I'm second fixing sockets and some under cupboard lights all supplied by the client. I'm happy to have put this house back to a good standard and played my part in the refurbishment.
Old house's that haven't had their wiring looked at in over 30 years often throw up shocking problems that have probably been sitting there going unchecked for years.
If you're buying a house or thinking about renting one out and becoming a landlord? Get the electrics checked out properly by an accredited contractor who has knowledge in testing domestic properties, is competent and qualified.
NOT your mate Dave who once saw a couple of RU-vid videos and now thinks themselves an electrical master and will "check" everything over with a quick visual on his way home from (no not work) but the pub where he spends most of his time reinventing himself as this weeks in demand trade hero.
Thanks for watching.

Modern kitchen hinges often have a quick release to remove the doors without removing any screws.

Kitchens can be a nightmare man. Especially working in units 🙃 I've found that, before you cut out for the box, drill out the 4 corners of the box - this keeps the multitool from travelling too far and making horrible scratches everywhere.

Great video, just one thing, you mentioned the Zs readings at the socket should be about the same, that’s not true, it should be about the same for R1+R2 but it won’t be the case with Zs, the resistance increases the further away from the board you go then comes back down the closer you get to the board.
@aaronmdjones
@aaronmdjones 2 года назад
That doesn't make sense; if the R1+R2 stays the same, the Zs (Zdb+R1+R2) would be the same too, as this video demonstrates. On a radial, R1+R2 (and thus Zs) would increase the further you go from the board, but this video was talking about testing a ring. Regardless of how far down the ring you are, you should have the same readings, because you'll always have 2 parallel paths, and as one of them gets longer, the other one will get commensurately shorter. The only exception to this is when testing spurs off of the ring, again as this video demonstrates (at 19:34).
@alvina69
@alvina69 2 года назад
@@aaronmdjones It makes perfect sense and happens out in the field also. Please watch the videos in the link that explains why your Zs readings will vary at different points in the circuit and not just at a spur. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F0RkVUYfNEI.html

@@aaronmdjones Sort of yes, sort of no. If you're doing the cross connections then the loop resistance will be the same everywhere. Once it's back to "normal", the easiest way of thinking about it is the two extremes of 1) a socket right at the board and 2) a socket miles away from the board both on the ring. The close socket has a very short cable back to the board and a very long cable back to the board. The earth loop of the very short loop will be effectively zero, and the long loop will have negligible impact on the system but serve to reduce it slightly from effectively zero. The far socket has two medium length cables back to the board (the very long one from before, cut in half). If they really are equal, then the earth loop will be half the impedance of one leg. Any other sockets on the ring are somewhere between those extremes. That's one of the reasons why you want the heavy current consumers towards the middle of the ring, otherwise you could end up overloading one leg (if it's 2.5mm cable).

Obviousley never taken a cabinet door off before. Most of them just unclip from the inside. Why did you unscrew the door hinges ?
@JBE

Nice one mate good to see you back on 🙌🏻🙌🏻 sorry if this is a dumb question (I’m not a sparks just a thick bricky) but find it interesting , so is the oven/extractorhood on the same circuit and the hob on a different(6mm) one because the hob is more powerful?am I right in thinking the oven is on a 13amp because it will be 2200w . I’m just interested as we have an induction hob with its own plug top+oven with rewirable plug13amp (prob should be hardwired) +extractor hood rewirable plug 3amp and all other appliances ff kettle etc all on that same circuit 🤔 is this wrong?I know we do have a oven circuit(think 45amp) with a red switch and single socket, but there’s bugger all plugged into it 😂😂 surely if it was over loaded it would trip the mcb... I hope 😂😂😂
@JBE
@JBE 2 года назад
Hey there king 🤴 😎. If the hob came on a plug then it's usually designed so it can't be all on at the same time? If all your appliances are on the same circuit then it's not wrong as long as it's been installed correctly? Is it a radial circuit? How big is the MCB? 16, 20 or 32 amp.
@kingofthetrowel1725
@kingofthetrowel1725 2 года назад
@@JBE cheers for reply mate 👍 the kitchen/lounge is on a ring final 32amp mcb .I’m just puzzled that an oven can be plugged into that circuit as I always though an oven went on (the oven circuit 45amp) it’s own. The wife has just checked under cupboard and the fridge freezer is actually plugged into that 😂🤷‍♂️ the oven looking at it is 0.75 flex with the added plug but definitely on the kitchen/lounge ring,we’ve had hob oven microwave kettle job lot on at same time and no trip
@JBE
@JBE 2 года назад
@@kingofthetrowel1725 Yeah fixed appliances like an electric free standing oven had their own dedicated circuit, as they pulled a lot of amps when on full Sunday dinner duties. Other appliances don't pull as much individually but can still have an affect on the circuit or MCB when all plugged in and running at the same time. Christmas day for example.
