I loved the "southern" accent he used. Made him feel like an old Confederate officer in a western.

I thought that Richard Brakes's performance was excellent. He made Valin Hess really intimidating, without the Imperial Officer doing anything sinister, just through using acting. He seemed so evil that I assumed that he was going to become a recuring villain in the series or at least the main villain for this episode, so I was actually shocked when the character got killed within minutes of us being introduced to him.

I think that episode, and the whole cafeteria scene, whas some of the best writing. Not just the best Star Wars writing, but overall. All three of the actors nailed that scene.

His scene was pure amazing. So intense. Perfect build up. His words, and demeanor slowly shifted almost unnoticeably until suddenly you could see the crazy in his eyes and bam. He had pushed the other characters too far. He was such a stand out character for only being on screen a few minutes.

Also good to hear more evidence that the Pedro being a diva rumours are nonsense!

I met Richard Brake last year at a convention, such a nice guy who plays such vile characters. His appearance on Mando was a surprise to be sure but a welcome one!

Getting to see Grogu would have to be a part of my contract if I signed on. I mean that's an integral part of the show!!

Yes, Richard is one hell of an actor! The chemistry beween the 3 in that scene was one of the highlights of the season. It remineded me of Tarantino or even going back to a scene from the world war 2 classic: Where Eagles Dare!

Brake really has that Willem Dafoe appeal. Too bad he's much more underrated.

Great interview! You always ask interesting questions and get people on these that normally don't get the level of press they deserve. Valin Hess is one of the best Imperial Officers in all of Star Wars despite such a brief appearance. He's the kind of guy who wouldn't have been intimidated by Vader the way a lot of officers were. Richard seems like a super down to earth guy, and love how he just killed all the stupid Pedro Pascal is a diva rumors so casually. I hope this interview circulates widely so people stop with the nonsense that Pedro is hard to work with. No one who works on the show has ever hinted Pedro is tough to work with either through words or body language/subtext. Internet trolls love their drama though.

That was a fantastic scene. The best acting in Star Wars, glad you asked about it. I am not surprised it took them a week to shoot it, it is done so well.

He was so good in the episode that I was torn between wanting to see more of his character and wanting him shot in the face. Dilemma 🤔

So that Internet rumor is total BS since it seems that the finished filming almost a year ago (February) AND that the last two episode helmet removals were scripted. Her prediction of focusing the 2nd half on other characters and have Mando as a very far away background character was wrong as well. He was front and center in every episode. This rumor looks more and more like it’s busted.

Brake's performance is a highlight of the whole series and I pity the poor Imperial officers that will have to follow that act.

I've come to the conclusion that this scene is the greatest single scene in all of Star Wars. Yes, even over the Throne Room scene in *RotJ.*

I love Richard Brake. He perfectly conveys a mix of threatening and laid-back with the way he reads his lines. I was kinda sad that his character got killed off so soon lmao

Nice interview. Speaking about accents, his natural accent is interesting too. Born in Wales, raised in the US, living in London. He has a softened general British accent but with an American rhotic /r/ (He said werk instead of wehk) Good job.

Thank you VERY much for that. I have always been an OT fan and thought that it was untouchable. However, I now have to say that MANDO CHAPTER 15 was the best STAR WARS that I have ever witnessed!!! Especially from when they arrived at the facility (with the troopers clapping) to the exit on freaking Slave I with Boba & that...OMG...seismic charge!!!

As a horror movie junkie I’ve been saying for years mainstream cinema has been sleeping on Richard Brake. He’s so good I’ve rewatched terrible movies (31, 3 from Hell and Doom) just for his scenes.

Loving these series.... thanks for keeping them going Thanks for bringing up the fact that nearly all the Imperials have British accents... I was wondering the same when watching the last few episodes.

The old EU explanation for SW accents was that people from the core worlds, like Coruscant have British accents (like Imperials, Obi Wan etc) while people from the outer rim tend to have more American accents (like the Skywalkers). So his character could have just been from a planet in the mid or outer rim.

Love watching interviews on actors with the smaller character roles. They really don't get as much credit as they should. This guy did a brilliant job on that Imperial officer role. Absolutely killed it!

I had no idea this guy was Joe Chill! That's bonkers!

That episode in particular is one of the best in that series... It put a relatable face on the soldiers of the Empire. It's easy to look at a country's military and assume every one of them must be the devil if they are working for that regime... but typically you're looking at a normal everyday person who was likely (and unfortunately) fed propaganda from birth. Luke himself was eager to join the Imperial Academy Han Solo (per original Canon) - was an imperial academy flight cadet , and pretty good in a TIE/LN Migs Mayfeld - clearly pissed about what the empire was capable of in Operation: Cinder, shot his former commanding officer in the heart Finn - Couldn't stomach what the First Order was willing to do (and...MY GOD what a WASTED premise with that character... Boyega was right to be pissed) How many more Imperials do what they do, not because they agree with the Empire, but because now that they are in too deep, they have families at home who might suffer some 'disappearing-in-black-vans' KGB style shit if they stray too far from the good graces of the Empire? Cartoonish-mustache-twirling bad guys are weak tea. Gimme a layered, relatable 'bad' guy every time

Liked how Richard played Valin Hess very well as a villain.

The Mandalorian finale alone is better than anything since and including The Phantom Menace.

When I first saw that episode I initially thought Valin Hess was Daine Jir from "A New Hope" (the officer who tried to warn Vader that keeping Leia prisoner would be dangerous). They look very similar.

If not before, when Bill as Miggs sat down with Hess the comedian disappeared, he was only this soldier. I think it also has another level of depth if you've served in any capacity under people who are terrible.

Why doesn't anybody get the face scan machine? They said when they were deciding who should go in that the scanner contains a database of known Imperials and Collaborators. If you aren't a known Imperial or Collaborator you pass the scan. Hence Mando, whose face would not be in the database, passes the scan.

During Lockdown I'm getting around to playing some of my backlog of PS4 games. Currently playing Star Wars Battlefront 2 campaign and one of the levels is... Operation Cinder!

He has to be from the south, but not North Carolina in my area. Could be nice to talk to this actor.
