The patriot is no knife for hard work. The blade geometry and D2 steel clearly make it a dedicated cutting tool. D2 steel was developed as a tool steel for tools like punching dies. The main focus was service life (thus the good edge retention) at low costs. For that application you don't need toughness. That's why D2 tends to chip if you put too much stress to the blade.
I just bought one on Ebay and received it yesterday. Honestly I'm not too hard on my knives, I use them for small cutting tasks, slicing fruit for snacks etc., but always carry with a primary focus for self defense. That's what caught my eye with this knife, it's sleek and compact yet large enough to be formidable. The sheath is really nice with its secure hold on the knife yet allows rapid deployment if needed. While this knife might not meet everyone's needs it certainly does meet mine. This was the last one available on Ebay in D2 steel. My total price was $60 including shipping. There are still some available in CPM-154 but they're $183 which is out of my range right now. Maybe later if they're still available. Great review by the way.
I am glad you enjoyed the video my friend. Sounds like this knife will suit your needs perfectly. It is very slicey and not at all cumbersome to carry with that nice slim sheath. You do generally need to be careful with the tips of full flat grind knives but they do cut most things better than any other grind I believe. Definitely designed to cut and not to pry. I am hard on my knives I know, but it is my way of putting them to the test a little so I can review them later. Thank you very much for watching.

Thanks for the look at this one Tim. I like the over all look and size of this one but I think for the price I’d still chose a mora. Tbh I have a love hate relationship with fixed blades I end up just using my pocket knife for everything. I do think a good leather sheath and dangler like you said would make it a lot better for someone in your neck of the woods. I think I’ll stick with my super simple to sharpen knives and leave d2 to the professional woodsmen lol. Take care buddy.
Simple to sharpen is the way to go really. I think the solution to harder steels is maybe to keep it sharp. I was very impressed with the edge retention. Less so in how long it took to get from quite sharp to proper sharp. But with all of the work it's done its never been dull. I have not had to stop what I am doing and sharpen it. If it was a Mora though it wouldn't be that little bit shorter now than it was. Thanks for watching Michael.

@@alphadawg81 yes I am English (was that the question?). From a little place called Bury, been here nearly 12 years, lived in Spain before that. As for Wood Jewel. Like many other Finnish manufacturers they use Lauri blades which are excellent and cheap. Fit and finish is often less than perfect and I do worry with all of the different layers in the handle that something may come loose. I do have one and have had no problems. I also know many other people who have them and have had no problems. My worry about the handle parts coming loose comes from old knives of different manufacturers. They also have the leather strip type sheath dangler as found on many Finnish knives. I have known these to fail but again on knives from other manufacturers. They tend to look really nice aesthetically. On mine the only problem I have had is the blade in the sheath is sometimes a little difficult to line up with the plastic Sheath liner. The price is really good and they are very attractive knives with a good blade and a good price.

I hear you Tim I'm a Mora man all the way. I carried various gerbers and Essie's as a younger man. A lot of times they just amount to extra weight. The amount of things you can do with a simple cheap companion is absolutely unbelievable.
Moras do tend to outperform far more expensive knives and the really good thing is that you know exactly what you are getting. I don't like the sheaths much though. The companion in the video cost me 12 dollars (it's cheap so close to Sweden) if I pay 20 for a leather sheath that is 32 dollars for a knife that is extremely hard to beat. Nobody likes the look of the handles though and people don't trust rat tailed tangs. Wooden handle scales on a full tang splitting isn't something that people worry about at all though. Granted a broken tang is more of an issue but realistically you have to give your knife quite a pounding for either thing to happen.
@@KuukkeliBushcraft I have a bunch of companions and I had taken it upon myself to abuse one pretty badly. I even used it to baton kindling every day for about 2 months. I was going on over a year with it when I lost it. My brother just got me one of the full-tang Garbergs. It seems like an amazing knife so far. Morakniv is just hard to beat.

It's a verikauha, literally blood ladle. Worn by the Finnish army for most of the 20th century. Worn at the time of the winter war against Russia which is I guess it got its nickname. Made of wool and actually really warm.

Another good information video, D2 corrosion I wouldn't worry about unless you're a fisherman around salt water salt all the time , 61 dose seem to hard for wood kraft it's more for hunting like cutting through bones type of thing , I would know way use that knife for making batons you could break it in half , the Patriot looks a small hunting knife for cutting into animal with its hard steel. Thanks buddy, there are some environments where everything rusts😂. Thankfully I don't live in one of those. I have never seen a spot of rust on any of my D2 blades. You are right also that it would be better for hunting and fishing ect but also things like food prep and rope cutting. I think battoning would break the tip as it is pretty fine (mine isn't any more😂) and the spine is quite thick. Thank you very much for watching my freind.
Beautiful knife mate, I really like it a lot! Its expensive here though and way over my budget :( . Have you had problems with D2? Every knife I had with D2 steel has been subpar for the most part, even better branded ones...maybe just the way it is? A dangler is a game changer and a must for me now on fixed blades! My best fixed blade thus far is hands down that crkt mossback hunter and the cold steel cheapies. Goodness I really like the style of this, one day maybe but id prefer other than D2. I have had some minor chipping with D2 and that tip breaking. Very fine tip but also not much force. The edge retention seems to be excellent and of course a lot depends on the heat treatment and edge angle. I do think it is better on folding knives. I prefer 80CRV2 and 1095 on my fixed blades. They get used a lot harder. In general I think D2 is a good steel expecially considering how inexpensive it is. Shame this knife is so expensive over there. I suppose that it is a long way from Bulgaria.

I dont mind carbon if its got a coated blade lol...I think every single D2 I have had developed issues, my D2 Rat 1 knife doesn't seem as good as the Aus8 steel on my rat 2...of course could be heat treat issues also like you stated. Its always a gamble ya know lol
Stripped the bark of 2 frozen 5 foot birch poles and cut a lot of rope and still cut paper pretty well afterwards. That is quite impressive edge retention. Thanks for watching Joe.
Hi Buddy, I have the same knife with black scales. I like the knife, but in my opinion it is not perfect. You have already mentioned some things. The angle behind the bevel is too small for the steel at 30 degrees in my opinion. For D2 steel I would prefer an angle of at least 35 degrees. For heavier tasks, better 40 degrees. Also, the blade is too thick for me at 4mm. 3mm or better 2.5 mm would suit me better.
Your right but I think it does also depend on what you do with your knife. I certainly should have been more gentle with it😂.it is the kind of edge geometry that I would more typically have on a folder and more suited to the kind of work I use those for. It would also be a lot slicier if it was thinner. I was thinking that just a couple of hours ago when I was cutting onions. I still quite like the knife though. It's nicely made and pleasent to use. At least it is for 50 Euros😂.

I suppose we are a lot closer to Bulgaria than you are. Mind you that logic doesn't really work when you bear in mind that svord knives are quite cheap over here. I have to say that I think the F005 is a better knife than the Patriot and cheaper. It does depend on what you do with your knife and your own personal prerences. I like a scandi grind. i think sandvik steel is the way to go for stainless steels,they behave alot like carbon steel,ive tried more expensive stainless steels but they have all chipped and been brittle.i think it might be because the supersteel gets so high hardness.
I like the sandvik steels too, although I don't have any experience of higher end stainless steels. 14c28n I think is the best stainless I have used extensively . The vast majority of my knives are carbon steel.
