The Mansfield to Southwell Disused Railway Walk - Farnsfield to Southwell
Join me as i take a journey along the former Mansfield to Southwell Line, part of the former Midland Railway in Nottinghamshire.
Starting at Farnsfield, we follow the route along the former line towards Kirklington before we reach our destination of Southwell with a mix of eye level & drone footage following the route with historical images too.

I remember the disused railway building when I was a child in the 1970s. It was demolished and houses were built in that area. It's such a shame that this line was lost😥 A railway between Nottingham, Newark and Mansfield would be so useful.

1920's: Lets close down the railway serving communities to save a few bob. 2020's: Let's spend billions on a new railway that doesn't stop anywhere.

Being a Farnsfield lad, this was my playground as a youth! What a surprise to see it on RU-vid. Spent many days inside the goods shed exploring the tunnels underneath until it was burnt to a shell. Wow, what a blast of nostalgia!

Good video again. Not enough scrap value in the loading gauge to make recovery worthwhile, fortunately for those who enjoy the line today. You are correct about the falling grade, I will not bore with all the details, but the railway is on a falling grade from Cockett Lane Road (Farnsfield) to just before Kirklington Station.

Weird thing about the music in this video, as I'm watching our dog is at my feet and I found myself tapping on the dogs back to the music. I noticed what I was doing at 8:46, the music you picked just pulls the viewer into the story of the video. The drone work and old black and white photos really add to the work. Thanks.....

Oh wow.... you have dropped three vlogs, months apart but interestingly integral in my life.... Kelmarsh where I’m living now ... Sawley where I used to live and that farm at Farnsfield belonged to the Pinders who are family ( although slightly removed ) and I grew up there in the summers back in the 60’s and also grew up in Radford in Nottingham .... 1964 the year I was born ... wow! Farnsfield ... so many happy memories

The brick overbridge at 14:30 is a skew arch. Because the road over the top doesn't cross the railway at 90° the courses of brick that make up the arch barrel don't meet the faces of the bridge at 90° either. In order to balance the forces within the arch itself the bricks are laid out at what looks like an odd angle. They are actually arranged in a helical path and the exact pitch of the helix depends on the skew angle of the bridge. It's a nice example and I'm glad it's survived. It's something a team of bricklayers would struggle to build now the skills have been lost.

Very interesting. Reminds me of my school days in Southwell. Sometimes I played near the deserted station where there were still luggage labels etc. to be found. Pity I didn't pick any up. I recall a 'ten mile walk' for charity along the trackbed, which looked very bare in those days. Happy memories of a beautiful part of the world.

Another cracking video, Ant; you certainly had the weather for it! The loading gauge was a great find; I take it the platelayers hut that was somewhere around Maythorne is no more? It was the scene of a fair bit of childhood mischief, when I was growing up in Southwell, e.g. first can of beer etc! I also seem to recall that there were the remains of a signal on the stretch between Southwell and Rolleston, but guess that would have been removed when they turned the track bed into Racecourse Road.
@peterdonson3928
@peterdonson3928 3 года назад
From memory, the remains of a signal was a concrete signal post probably the distant for Upton Crossing. It may have still had some Midland style fittings on it, I can't remember, it was a long time ago. I found it while cycling down Racecourse Road, possibly illegally. I assume that as concrete it had no scrap value and so survived.

I take it this route is an old Midland route? You didn't say it was but going by your pictures it looks like it could have been a Midland route because of the style of the railway buildings. Maybe one day if you get a chance you could walk the line from Bedford to Hitchin and/or the Bedford to Cambridge line.
