As a horse owner and gardner this is great i compost all mine before using. My garden and fields are awesome. My grand father grew and bred award winning roses....he said horse manure was best if hay was alfalfa. Now the down side some hay is sprayed with chemicals that inhibit plant growth....so take some of that year old stuff and do a bean germination test. Cannot remember the chemicals name.....Can be in purchased compost too but think they are screening better 4 that now. Just fyi and cannot wait to see if results. Horse manure i joke i partially composted hay. Also dogs love it.😂 keep up the great content happy New years

Nothing but the best. It's about an hour away. I made about a half dozen trips. My thought process was this. It was a lot of effort for little return. I am already composting. Hi Diego, I would also be concerned about Aminopyralid especially in the US where sparying is much more used than the EU where I am. I test my local horse manure with peas, I just take a seed tray and scoop manure form different places of the pile into the different cells, plant the peas and se if they sprout! Even if the horses get Aminopyralid free fodder, they could still get Aminopyralid bedding material. Best of luck!

I have access to lots of horse manure for free. I've heard a lot about deworming drugs given to horses and feed with herbicides having negative effects on the garden. I'm curious what your take is on this. How long does it take for those chemicals to break down and no longer affect plant growth or worm activity?

Try planting seeds directly into some of that year-old horse manure. I got a trailer load of horse poo last spring that was supposed to be a year old but definitely wasn't - it was still steaming aggressively when the guy dumped it in May. By the end of July it had cooled down some and I decided to seed a pile of it with sunflowers, pinto beans, turnips and radishes. I hadn't turned the pile or anything. My thinking was that the seeds might not even germinate and the plants probably wouldn't amount to anything, but maybe getting some roots going in there would help the manure break down. To my pleasant surprise all 4 types of seeds sprouted and grew just like normal - and yielded nearly as well as they would have in proper finished soil. I don't recommend planting in a fresh cow pie or anything like that - there are various obvious issues there - but I continue to feel more and more that people in general are *way* too freaked out about having "perfect" compost or soil.

As others have noted, aminopyralids are a pervasive concern in hay crops and any resulting livestock manures. A simple bioassay via sprouting and 4-ish weeks of growth on some bean plants can confirm or mostly rule out the presence of the chemical and therefore reduce risk (and there ARE risks with that pile in your driveway. they are widely used around the country). Unfortunately, they are legal in California, and are one of the most common herbicides used for control of things like thistle in hay fields. until persistent herbicides are illegal and out of production, I won't be using any manure products sadly :(

For me the most practical is the lasagna method. I do that in the fall and let the worms do their job. I mostly love horse manure and bedding right on top of the soil. I cover that with leaves for worm food and isolation. I keep the green house gasses and co2 in the soil that way is better for the environment and easy on my back.

I've found the weed-seed thing to be vastly overblown. When horse manure sprouts weeds they tend to be pretty easy to simply yank out and they don't come back (just get them out of there before they go to flower and make more seeds). I really don't find horse manure much worse than regular exposed soil in terms of getting weedy. You could always tarp it to prevent most of the seeds from ever sprouting. I'm much more concerned about whether or not the manure might contain persistent herbicides. I've been lucky so far but that could be a *real* problem.

Because horses are not for human consumption, people can use especially nasty stuff on the grass/hay they eat (some of it can persist in their manure for years). So I'd be careful. At the very least, make sure you test the compost before you spread it around the garden, to avoid some serious, long lasting problems from weed killers. Here's an article about one of the most common dewormers used for horses, ivermectin. Short story, it breaks down very quickly, mostly in the horses gut; the dewormer shouldn't pose a health concern to red wigglers especially if you let the manure age for a bit or it's already aged. That said, there are other issues with using manure in vermicomposting setups; read the article for details: www.redwormcomposting.com/worm-farming/how-harmful-are-vermicides-in-manure/
