I've always wondered why we lacked active stealth technology, figured it was a technology limitation issue, trying to process a signal then transmit a modified equivalent to fill in the gaps and hide your vehicle in a timely manner. Basically the speed of light limiting the option to faster then light particles in a computer, but if that isn't it then what on earth took so long.

Material science, as far as "glass"/sensors that can take in all that radiation without reflecting any incidentally. Also not all that new the mirror finish f117s and f22s were likely playing around with similar tech. Outside cost might as well just make a RAS based predator though. Edit: we've also had "active stealth" in the form of EW pods/suites on growlers/f35s and other platforms for some time.

Ive read in some military aerospace electronics journals that along with spoofing and jamming, there is a new methodology called 'sponging' which could (in the future) turn the air itself into radar absorbing materiel or use the moisture and dust present in the air aloft as a tool for misdirection of signals. i had this idea. it would take one hell of processor. you have to play the inverse back into the wave and you only got the time its traveling through the surface to measure it and return it. good news is that most radars are predictable and the cancel returns are easily calculatable. so the first few clicks might get returned, but pretty soon the "cloak" would be in phase.

Canceling waveforms is actually not a new thing, having said that, it requires that your processing and reflecting of a directly inverse waveform be within the time limits that the originating radar uses for not only detection but processing. This is part of what electronic warfare is about. What is absolutely mind-boggling, is that you can put that type of processing power and the speed of the processing in a pod that can work in real world conditions against multiple threats at once. It also won't make the reaper 100% undetectable, even in those radar signals, because there's a difference between one wing tip to the other, and nose to tail compared to the pod, but honestly it probably doesn't matter, that type of difference depending on the radar type might make zero difference in its ability to distinguish a signal. Also I suspect this is significantly better against longer waveforms, versus shorter ones, which actually might be better for a reaper that tries to stay undetected, but once detected might still be possible to lock on and shoot down from a distance. Just trying to bend my mind on the engineering involved for something like this, it is honestly f****** amazing I didn't think they could make a system that could do radar detection, processing, and signaling back quickly enough to fool any quality modern radar, much less one that can do so on multiple vectors The reaper if I remember right is relatively large, which makes it able to deal with many of the longer waveforms, in other words early warning radars, a tad better in this instance for canceling the incoming radar wave I wonder if they have to profile the reaper into the processing for the signaling to be effective Just so we understand it, this technique would be useful in all cases of stealth systems carrying a radar powerful enough both in signal and processing power, makes me wonder if it's possible to software upgrade many of the newer systems to use something similar, it wouldn't even have to be 100% effective, as I said it's almost impossible to do so, but if you can attenuate the waveform 80%, in addition to the radar absorption materials and the shape of the aircraft, I mean you might be looking at a bumblebee being like a blimp compared to what ends up going back from an f-35 using something similar

The french use a cross modulation tech on the rafale fighter based on Fourier synthis, all energy or sound Propagate in a waveform patern, win you cross modulate two identical waves depending on the sequence they either double there amplitude and they negate them ,ist as simple as 1+1=2 or 1-1=0 ,so by interpreting spectrum energy coming in you can send out a mirror image going out and cancel they radar in this instance in the space around you , it works like reactive armor. They should drop these reapers and focus on the new drones like loyal wingman using smaller cheaper and more disposable platforms for targeting and recon ,you can make a drone like this vary small and out of materials that are radio translucent like the original predator that mostly made out of a wood and fiberglass composite. Carbon fiber materials are also translucent, radar just goes right through them .

Technology similar to this has been in the black world for literally decades now. This is nothing new but it's still cool.

SR-71 had EW systems, still classified I believe, that could, among other things, spoof enemy radar into believing Blackbird was miles away from where it actually was. This system was mentioned publicly in 1981 when North Korea fired multiple SAMs at a Blackbird.

This would be very interesting with a 4th gen fighter like the FA18. The FA18 already has a pretty small radar signature thanks to its engine air intakes being on the side of the plane and its rear tail fins being canted instead of being at a 90 degree angle. If you were to combine that platform with decent RAM like the Have Glass V coating that f16s now get, this pod, and the new stealth external fuel tanks you could even push the FA18 into missions that would normally only be for stealth aircraft.

@@PrograError Well the Have Glass V coating is just a paint job but to my understanding it is just on f16s so far. It is hard to find much info on it though.

I suggested a system like that to the US Navy Space Command around 2004. They didn't have the bandwidth to take on the project.

Alex, all those electronic warfare technologies can be and are used by non stealth aircraft. I think stealth is still defined by the shape of an aircraft, and the application of radar absorbent material.

Do a dig on the ASQ-239 EW and give it it's own video. BAE probably has whitepapers around the DRFM tech The f35 integrates it with interoperability to target SAM and array sites

The Beginnings of "Active Stealth". Being Stealth that you actually do something confound and defeat enemy detection technologies instead exploiting the physics of the technology. The difference between armor, being Passive Defense, and countermeasures, being Active Defense.

I would like to think that we (US) are in the testing phase of systems beyond our conception. Something very big is on the way and and the means of countering it should be researched.
