Since this race is heavily themed with the pull-stars, it's possible that they scrapped this version as they wanted to save that gimmick for the "Spooky Speedster" level instead.
It could also be that they wanted to avoid having Cosmic Mario use pull stars or launch stars, seeing as those aren't involved with any of the other races. It might have needed separate rules for their animations to be triggered by something other than the player.
Yeah this definitely would’ve been too hard. I remember struggling with the Spooky Speedster as a kid, so I definitely would not have been able to finish this race and unlock Luigi for a while. And imagine how difficult Cosmic Luigi would’ve been!
It really was the pinnancial of 3d Mario, to me anyways. Unfortunately, I look at how they handle their RPGS, and I don't have much confidence. Heck, even the sequel had a more lighthearted sillier tone compared to the first's more serious melancholic mood.

@Robertoxln Ubillux not really since there's so many of them, the only difference is the colors and toadette. So what's losing one toad, you won't notice it's gone.
Luckily, there would be a happy ending for them. At the end of the game, the galaxy is reborn and many different friends/foes from all of the galaxies (Even enemies that you've killed) all come together. It's safe to say that it would include that Toad, so the only downside would be trauma
i remember one time when i was younger, I was playing Galaxy when i saw Good Egg Galaxy had a Cosmic Mario Comet. When I selected it the game crashed for... obvious reasons. I've always wondered why that happened lmao
As a kid I loved the races! However I always got mad when I lost because I wasn't that good 😅. However the cosmic clones was a NIGHTMARE. Though I'm glad I pushed my way through because in the end, I completed my favorite game to this day. Thanks Swanky. 😁
I was honestly thinking that this was going to be about some race between 12 Super Mario Galaxy players that took 8 years because it was an hacked version that made the game full on kaizo.
You know the video was good when at the end I was like "oh that's the end of the video?" no pauses or nothing, always keeps me interested in watching more
As a game developer I think it's funny that this got so much attention, when it easily could've been something like: manager says, "I want to see some quick race prototypes by tomorrow's dailies." A couple devs put a ton of effort into creating what have become the 4 races we have, while one dev, probably already devoted to another project, only had time to put a half hearted effort into this one. Next day his gets cut because it's simply not as engaging. Now that throwaway the developer probably has no memory of is "THE MARIO RACE NO ONE EVER COMPLETED........"
I find it cool how Swanky keeps finding ways to return back to Mario Galaxy (and Luigi's Mansion for that matter). Be it strange experiments and behaviours of the game, unused content, or just funny bits to enjoy. Keep the good work, man.

I love these types of videos. Unluckily at the time, I was too busy with work and being a new father, so unfortunately don't have nostalgia (or at least as much) for this game. Is there anything like this in Mario 64? Scraped levels, stars, routes etc?
This may be old, but also pretty neat! After recording each of the races a few times over recently, I've been wondering quite a bit how they settled on what they did, and this gives a lot of insight!
Mario Galaxy had so many amazing levels, but this secret race beats them all in design by far. The scrapped area is so out of order, but it has some form of harmony in the chaos.
When I replayed the game for the 1st time i got to space junk 1 and thought, huh, i thought there was a race here. Now i find out a few years later and it was a scrapped thing. Either my version glitched or something OR my brain is just amazing
I think the reason for Cosmic Mario occasionally stopping in place was to allow time for players to catch up, as well as allow for the possibility of a harder Cosmic Luigi race where he wouldn't stop in place. Either way, I think I do understand why this was cut, because between the pathway being mostly fixed meaning you don't have too many options for shortcuts to get the upper hand on Cosmic Mario (while also not leaving many options for creating a harder Cosmic Luigi race), and the inconsistency with pull stars like you mentioned in the video (especially near the home stretch where you could potentially get stuck on the level geometry), this level just wasn't feasible for a balanced race.
This feels so familiar. Almost like I've played it before. I used to have all sorts of crazy dreams about this game when I was younger, so it might have been that.
Gosh, I haven't played the Galaxy games in years. Those games were great but Super Mario Sunshine will be always be my favourite. It would be cool to uncover more hidden things in that game. 🙂
Hi Swanky, not sure if you tried this (I didn’t find the RU-vid search for this), but have you tried making the floor in super Mario 64 lava and seeing if it’s possible to beat it? Though I guess you’d have to define what a “floor” is first. Would be interesting though
Can you make a video on the glitch that enables you to get 84 coins in Honey Hive Galaxy. It let's you slowly raise the lily pads by crouch spinning into them, and it takes around 2 hours to get enough heigh to access a planet with Piranha Plants still waiting there despite the planet not being meant to be accessible.
I’m a hardcore Super Mario Galaxy fan. By no means am I the best player, but I do consider myself to be relatively above average. I’ve been playing since it came out when I was a kid, and I honestly never outgrew that obsession. That said, I can say with full confidence that this would be incredibly hard, even for me. I feel it was rightfully scrapped, but it would still make a really cool challenge to ragequit, haha.
I wonder if cosmic mario's movements were recorded manually. It would explain the pauses - maybe the devs wanted to make the race easier to beat, and during development just paused instead of taking a longer route
It seems obvious to me why this was scrapped. If Cosmic Mario could also use Pull Stars and Spring Stars, they might as well have put Cosmic Mario in many more galaxies. At the same time, having a Speed Run in Space Junk Galaxy would have been more fair, given who the players would be at time of release.
From a game builder garage mindset of a developer, they found the star with glitchy cosmic Mario a very hard star, so they removed cosmic Mario and put in a timer instead. Also ChainChompBraden, theory on the “Spooky Speeder” race is another reason why they would replace cosmic Mario with a timer.
This is just me personally, but I'm kind of glad this got cut. That looks like a really awful cosmic race. But I'm glad we found it again. It's still kind of cool even though I would probably never enjoy playing it myself.

Wait a minute, I could have sworn I played this race when I played this game. I clearly remember losing all the time during this race and destroying controllers because I could never beat this race. I even remember getting stuck at the end of the race multiple times because of those spider things would always get in my way and cause me the race or the camera bugging out when going over that last hump and also causing the race to end in a loss.
I thought this was going to be another "The hardest 3 one ups to get in Mario Galaxy 2" scenario, but pleasently it was not and was actually worthwhile.
This may so8nd stupid, but I played both Super Mario Galaxy'S a lot in my child times (played them to 100%) and I could swear that I played that exact mission you told about in my childhood.
how do we know that the AI is not GIGOing on alpha-version instructions? (for example: the pauses may be due to them having replaced the intended action ... which might mean that the route produced is a 'forgot-some-turns' route)
