Mark was a family friend in the 1980s but I haven't seen him for years. He knew my dad and when I started learning guitar as a teenager Mark came round a few times and showed me the basics. Also gifted me a red stratocaster which I still have to this day. Thanks Mark.
I played pro rugby and was in an after match function at Twickenham. There was royalty, celebrities everywhere yet my father’s eyes were fixed on this bald gentleman with glasses… my dad kept saying “that’s Mark Knopfler” I had no idea who he was (forgive me I’m a late 80’s baby) finally my dad built up the courage to ask him for a photo and this man was the absolute salt of the earth and actually knew the area we lived in Australia. What a guy.
Like he said, there'll come a time when you'll have to say "I am happy they're (his guitars) going to different homes". He's literally announcing his retirement. Thank you Mr.Knofler, your music is still reaching many homes till today. 😎
I sold Mark two guitars... One a 2003 Gibson Custom Shop '57 Reissue Les Paul in Brazilian Blue Finish and a Brazilian Rosewood Board with aStinger Headstock which I believe is hanging on the bottom Row Center in this video... The other was a 1965 Gibson Dove that was near mint which I do not see pictured here... He loved them both ! Cheers Mark and Good Luck with the Auction !
Mark Knopfler is my guitar hero. He combines sound, emotion, and skill in every song he writes and plays. I can't afford any of these guitars but I hope they go to homes of guitarists who will love them.
It is hard to find interviews like this with Mr. Knopfler. Which is a shame, I could listen to him talk about his songs and guitars and life for hours on end.
I gotva chance to get to know Mark during the Brothers in Arms era. One of the nicest people you will ever meet. He was also incredibly humble and down to earth.
What a collection. I really hope the guitars are being sold to people who actually play them instead of collectors. I would love to see a new generation playing on these pieces of musical history. Mark is one of the greatest of all time in my humble opinion. I’ve seen Mark live in 2019 and I still call this one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen.
@@mylarus i’m afraid so too. But let’s not forget that guitars are meant to be played. At least, that’s my opinion. Not to be stored in cases or (when lucky) exposed in glass cases.
One of the GOATS and still so down to earth. A big fan here. Had the privilege to see him live and unfortunately this seem like a farewell from stages. He will not be forgotten. His sound (and JJ's) is unique. Ps.. nobody mentions the fabulous 105.003 on his wrist? Great taste for guitars, great taste for watches.
Not only my favorite guitarist and songwriter but an incredible man who I have loved for decades. I’m grateful to have seen Dire Straits in the late 70’s and I have seen Mark play with other artists, even Emmilou Harris and others in Nashville
We can feel Mark's passion in each phrase..each word. Added to his talent, emotion, sensitivity... that's the reason for his success!! Thank you, Mark..🫠❤️
Father time is undefeated......Clapton, Gilmore and now knopfler are seniors now passing on their living legacies in their guitars....sad but poignant and beautiful at the same time
Fan since 1978, and still trying to catch all live shows he does. Hoping for one more tour after the new album is released, I can not imagine a life without Mark providing the soundtrack!
Still one of my favourite guitarists, I still remember being blown away by the fact that he was a fingerstyle player because the sounds he got on songs like Sultans of Swing and Money For Nothing is just insane
It would be a great honor to touch one of your guitar collections. I'am one of the million people inspired by your great music. More power to you Mark!
Mr. Knopfler is the reason why I’m obsessed with strats. Red strats in particular. Once I heard that crisp opening lick on Telegraph road, it was a done deal.
Saw him in concert back in the early 90’s and was so moved by his sound that I took up guitar within the week and have been playing regularly ever since.
IMHO Mark is the most versatile and simply the best guitarist/songwriter of all time. His Dire Straits stuff was great, but his writing and playing went to another level when he went solo. His songs about historical events are so well researched and crafted, it is hard to believe anyone could’ve ever written them. One of my very favourites in terms of lyrics and playing is “So Far from the Clyde”. It is simply a story about the demolition of an old ship. But the emotion it conveys through both the lyrics and music is just wonderful.
Exactly, just my Words. Most people talk about sultans, money for nothing and a few others, but Mark knopfler is so much more. A real shame that no more people are aware of it. I put it down to a lack of open-mindness,especially from the musicmedia and radiostations.
there just comes a time in life, when its best to "let it go".....what a collection.....and his guitars arein really good nick too......the auction will be a belter....for "some".....i'll keep my eyes peeled....
Playing the guitar is one of the most beautiful things to do in this life...I have done it in almost 40 years now and I still do it everyday if I can...pure love in this life...and thanks to Mark Knopfler and all the others guitarheroes in this world who had inspired us over all these years to do something meaningful in our life... Rock on! /Magnus
Never had a lesson , but his depth of soul is obvious in his music... he wrote some of the most beautiful songs ever written . Because we are contemporary we have lived the same decades and how it was back then .I Own every album of Dire Straits and his solos . The songs brought back so many memories of growing up , relationships and feelings that still make make my arms hair stand up with goose bumps of emotions . Thanks for making my eyes well up Mark ....especially when I listen to Romeo and Juliet . My Juliet is still dear to my heart 50 years after we went our separate ways "but it was just that the time was wrong" .
I don't know why people keep posting these comments. Just for reference I could probably show you over a thousand other posts that say exactly the same thing with another guy's name. Why can't we just say this guy is my favorite guitar player? And leave it at that LOL
Couldn't agree more. What defines this ominous best player? Sold records? Speed? This could be verified objectively and Knopfler would fail according to this. So you still have things like "feeling/tone/melody" but these are highly subjective.@@Joe-mz6dc
He’s truly one of the greatest musicians and songwriters in history, and it makes me happy to see him glad to share his tools of the trade with others. I’ve seen him twice live and hope to see him again.
When you Combine; Song writing (story telling); Composition/guitar style (originality); Vocals (expressing emotion). In my book Mark is Number One! As an audiophile, Mark's songs are a true pleasure to listen to ... especially his solo work ... pretty much all of it.
Totally agree im a bit of an Audiophille too, Sticking Brothers in Arms 'Original Master edition' on my Project Classic, Rega Phono stage and Mordant Short floorstanders cranked up a bit via source direct is nothing short of heaven. the clarity and production is off the chart.
I was in right at the beginning when they hit the road running ! I'd never heard anything like it in my life. When the Beatles were monopolising the sixties, I was listening to the Beach boys, and then in the 70's along came what was the beginning of the legend that was to be Dire Straits. I'm in the second half of my seventies now, and for me, Dire Straits are unrivalled. I still have an American Strat, and a Yankee Tele that came out of Mannys in New York in 2000, but If I live till I'm a hundred, I will never be able to emulate the talent of this man. The Alchemy live album was and still is, for me, the best live album of my lifetime ! Keep going Mark ! you are the man !
When you hear such an iconic guitarist say how they couldn't afford a Gibson Les Paul that speaks volumes to me. Gibson's very high price point allowed so many other guitar makers to offer up guitars that also sounded great at a reasonable price. Maybe Gibson's biggest mistake was sticking to the very high prices for their amazing guitars.
Mark has given me the most musical pleasure throughout my life, and I am 70 years of age. Marks guitar playing has often brought me to tears with his moving methods of emotional crescendos and his individual riffs etc. I have not long left on this planet, but I wish I could just meet him to shake his hand and to thank him for what he has done for me and that emotional way he has made me feel so often. His music and the way he plays just sends me to somewhere special God Bless you Mark, thanks so very much mate. You have little idea what your playing means to me. Many will feel the same I know. Mark, you are a special musician, so rare with a gift that I cannot describe. Thank s so much!
He's my guitar hero. When I was a kid, I never thought I'd be any good, able to solo, able to play rock/blues, ect. because I couldn't play with a pick. When I came across some of his videos, I realized he didn't use a pick, so I knew there was hope. Still what I'm clinging to, since I still am not good at the guitar. Timeless music, timeless guy, and a timeless watch he is wearing wearing as well (Speedmaster). Great video!
My heart always sinks a bit when one of these comes up. I love the music this generation made. I already know that style of music will never be front and centre again, but seeing all these greats winding down or going altogether is a a bit sad to see. Like Mark himself hinted at, there was a time when none of these musicians would have swapped their prized posessions for cash. I'm not saying they're mercenaries now, just that they've accepted that period of their life is coming to a close.
I think it's a matter of not being bogged down by possessions. I notice that the National from Brothers In Arms cover is not in the sale. Would love to play that Money for Nothing Les Paul.
the same way the big names sold their catalogs of music for big $, this makes sense to put your house in order at the end of your life, at least professionally.
Finally John gets the recognition! Thanks Mark, for all the music! And thanks John for all the great Suhr products. Love seeing Mark talk about the first one. Hopefully this is just a small snippet from a larger documentary.
@@TeddScheckler after reading the comments I had seen that, it’s cool that people will get a chance to own such a piece of musical history, but I still don’t like it. Lol.
The Pensa-Suhr MK1 is the most beatiful electric guitar I have ever seen. I believe he also sells the Scheckter Dream Machine Mark used in the eighties playing Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love. The outro solo of Tunnel of Love recorded on Wermbley in 1985 is the most beautiful music you will ever hear. Both guitars will generate hundred of thousands GBP, possibly millions for the MK1.
Completely agree. The MK1 for me is the ultimate guitar. Not only is it absolutely beautiful but it's just so versatile. I may never get the chance to own Marks, but I'll keep working my ass off to buy an MK1 one day!
I just love listening to Mark talk about his guitars and the songs that he played on them. What gentleman and gifted player and so generous in his donations to Cancer research. I only wish there where more gentleman like him so kind and grateful for his luck in life to share his guitars with other to enjoy. Keep up the great work Cheers Irish Paul
3:45 - Wow !,, That has to be the first proper look at that Prototype Pensa that controlled the Synclavier... I never realised it was purple until now !!.. It always looked more silver in the rare occasions it appeared in print or film. My mind is a little blown haha
Wow. Class act and amazing guitars. So thankful to you Mark for the example of how you put your heart and soul into your playing. You always have approached the instrument on your own terms, as well, without so many preconceived limitations. On instrument where it's hard to be an original, that's saying a lot. I hope those who can afford to buy these truly play and enjoy them.
They're all a bit sad - there have been several guitar players clear out their collections - obviously Clapton, but there's been David Gilmour, Bernie Marsden, Ted Nugent, and Nancy Wilson to name a few, and sales like that are always a thinly-veiled way of saying that the owner is retiring, and we may never see them play again, or very little.
Years ago Gilmour sold his guitars, and now Knopfler is selling his...it makes me sad. Life passes, but all that music remains, and the guitars on which it was created will be trophies that decorate someone's walls. Life is cruel. I wish I were a poet so that I could describe with more soul the pain I feel over the transience of life and those people who made our transience beautiful with their compositions and virtuosity. But I'm not, so my clumsy words will in no way ease the departure of the instruments that will be a part of my life until my last breath.
One of the very best guitarists, ever. Didn't really matter the guitar, he'd get a tune out of anything. Unique style and playing. Right up there with the best.
In my mid 20's I adored the Dire Straits and went to their concerts. It was just recently I became nearly obsessed again with his songs and guitar plays he performed in the early 1990's. He's a few years older, I picked up an eGuitar a few years ago, played along my Romeo & Juliet, Money For Nothing, etc knowing that I never be even close to MK's unique talents. Consoling is that I start looking him now . . . . You're my Rock hero to the very end of live. Thank you MK to live in my live span too.
Thank you Mark for all the joy you've brought me and many others! Could you please do all of us a favor and have a concert with Eric, Sir Paul, and Joe Walsh...before it can't happen. Jimmy B. was in that list (obviously not for his guitar playing, but for his story telling), but no longer. At least we have "oldest surfer on the beach"!
He has already done a concert with Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton. Look up Paul McCartney Abbey Road Medley ft Eric Clapton, Phil Colllins and Mark Knopfler. It was for the 1997 Music For Montserrat, which was devastated by a volcanic eruption. The concert starred musicians such as Phil Collins, Ray Cooper, Carl Perkins, Jimmy Buffett, Mark Knopfler, Sting, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Midge Ure, Arrow and many more, all of whom had once recorded at the island’s famous AIR Studios.
All I can say is, THANK YOU Mark!!!! I have a handful of guitars. Your strat tone is phenomenal and your ability to make a les paul sing and growl are why I have a handful of guitars I play. I really like the Les Paul behind your right shoulder at 2:40. I'd trade a couple guitars one that nice!
I'm so glad to hear that your guitars are going into different homes. I've always viewed a guitar collection like birds in a cage. They need to be freed up. They weren't meant to hang on a wall, unplayed.
Wow they are great guitars Mark they sound excellent. Wish I had some of your guitars the quality is brilliant. Loved you and your band your music will live on forever. Love you Mark.❤
What does at times seem to get lost in Mark Knopfler's guitar mastery is his songwriting skills and singing. He's a singer songwriter not just a guitarist.
Sir MK. You are amazing. You always going to be the best guitar player, with your golden fingers. Even I love. you are lovely voice👏👏💯🎸🎸🎸🎸💕💕💕💕💜❤🎸💜 even now you're still the best
Beautiful guitars, my big 5 guitar collection will be pleased to receive either one.... I understand the ageing and the love, but right know I feel like the sad witness of the end of an era, the pinnacle became history, the downhill is ahead....
It's odd how art is so important to our lives. MK has been a huge part of my journey - driving my car and listening to MK or DS has been my happy place for many years - decades. This is a beautiful collection of guitars. If I had the means I would probably go for the baby blue electric. Part of me is sad because it says to me that the days of making albums is probably coming to a close. If this is so - well that is the way it is - and I just feel lucky to have been on the journey since 1978. There are not too many people who can unite all nationalities with his art. Major respect for MK.
I love dire straights and mark knofler, I think it's sad when artists are past there prime and start selling off there guitars but I get it, they can command quite a bit of money if there famous, I guess there comes a time when you don't really need those guitars anymore, it is what it is, I would love to have one of his guitars he's such a cool laid back guy, cheers !!!
THere's also the Suhr Carved Top custom which is mostly an exact replica by the guy who built it originally. You can see them in Reverb 2nd hand around 7K€.
@@iorch82 Yeah. I never liked those guitars. Hate the EMG active pickups and Floyd Rose. All very dated stuff now. Mark still sounded brilliant with it as it was a very dark tone at times. The was a non FR bridge too on models. There’s one for sale in Jimi’s guitar store Dublin for €6000. I actually liked his more recent P90 models in blue. The Schecter Strats and red Tele are awesome.
@@KRAZEEIZATION schecter currently makes a model called the california classic which clearly took a lot of inspiration from Mark's pensa suhrs. It's made in Japan and priced around $2500. Passive pickups and a 2 point tremolo, quilt top, flamed neck, I'm tempted to pick one up some day
Pra mim, o.maior guitarrista da historia sem sombra de duvida. Nunca errou uma nota musical enquanto Clapton e Hendrix ate as vezes distorciam ao vivo. No studio era corrigido mad Marck não precisa. Ainda é pefeito.
What an amazing collection 🎸 - I know Mark would prefer the guitars to be continued to be played & not just hung in glass cabinets in offices of large corporates etc. Whenever I see these auctions such as Gilmour, Clapton etc. I think why not raffle them instead of auction? Example just the Dire Straits RU-vid channel has close to 2 million subscribers, wonder how many $50 tickets they could sell & that's without all the other publicity the raffle would attract (just do the math). The charities that get part of the sale would benefit even more & I bet many of the guitars would end up in the hands of real musicians. Sure some would be re-sold on Reverb etc. that's life but at least the majority would have a chance to be played.
