I think it's so wonderful that this company is producing professional opera for audiences outside of the major coastal cities and posting the productions on youtube for all to enjoy. Producing professional opera is an enormous feat and in this economic climate in the United States it's a miracle that companies like this are able to continue to bring the majesty of live professional opera to their respective communities.

In the 1960's, our parents bought albums of operas that had a narrator explain during a pause in the music, exactly what was happening. It made them more enjoyable then and now. Watching versions with Elmer Fudd & Bugs Bunny probably helped seal our love of opera.

Excellent clarity of both the instruments as well as the words themselves, nothing feels squished or unclear. Love that Act II finale, best 20 minutes of opera of all time.

What a wonderful production!! No doubt there are slightly better singers in other productions here on RU-vid, but this is the BEST ACTED 'Nozze' I've seen in DECADES! It's something 'large' opera houses tend to forget; opera should be a joy to the *eyes* as well as the *ears*.

Thank goodness for performing it the way Mozart intended! No deep meanings or ulterior stage designs! He compose it as a COMIC (buffo) opera and you have made him proud......now if only the so-called opera capitals would take a lesson from you in Kansas!!!!!!!!!!!!

No aluminium in the 18th Century - nor until towards the end of the 19th. Aluminium is produced by a process of electrolysis, which would have been far beyond the science of 1786 (that had to wait one hundred years), but whoever said opera has to be entirely historically accurate. The production suspends disbelief sufficiently, I think. Don't count the anachronisms, listen to the music!

SailorVVV Oh yes we do. The Bayer Process, that turns Aluminium Hydroxide, obtained from Bauxite into Aluminium wasn't invented until the last quarter of the 19th century. It also requires massive amounts of electricty which was not around in Mozart's day.
@davidcraig9779

If Mozart were in charge of this production, he would have put in an aluminum ladder just to amuse himself.

As they said above - it’s comic opera so I asked Bill and Ted to take me back to when Mozart was alive and I asked him what he thought of the ladder and he said “maxime excellentes!”. I didn’t realize at first he was busting my chops in Latin but then I realized that would be a language both of us would get the concept in. So I thanked Bill and Ted and told them I hope the new movie is the same.

First let me say that I love Mozart, and the Marriage of Figaro best of all his operas. That's why I looked up this production, it being one I hadn't seen. I wasn't impressed. There were more incorrect notes sung in this production than in all the productions I've ever watched combined, I believe, and that's not an over-exaggeration. It was most painfully obvious during the Count's solo in the 3rd act, when he realizes Figaro and Susanna are tricking him and vows revenge (Arnold Schwarzenegger fans may recognize a portion of this song from The Running Man, sung by the stalker, Dynamo, when he is introduced). To all those who wrote that Mozart would be proud of this production because of its faithfulness to his vision, watch the Glyndbourne version with Kiri Te Kanawa as the Countess. She, and it, have been justly lauded for years. The aria alone is worth listening to, and is the most beautiful version I've ever heard. This is the duet featuring the Countess and Susanna where they write the note telling the Count to meet Susanna in the garden that evening (another movie reference: in Shawshank Redemption, the song Andy broadcast to the entire prison from the warden's office).

@DannyEastVillage
@DannyEastVillage 9 лет назад
oh yeh. that is so fair to compare Wichita to Te Kanawa at the Glyndbourne. Can you even begin to understand what a great thing it is that this production was mounted in freakin' Kansas? And that they have an obviously large and excited audience? What an ungenerous ass you are.
@throatwobblermangrove8510
@throatwobblermangrove8510 9 лет назад
Danny Berry I guess I must educate you, being the "ungenerous ass" that I am, in what an individual should be able to expect from a "professional" opera troupe, be they from Rome, London, New York, or even the backwater, ill-bred, uneducated doldrums that are apparently what you consider Wichita, Kansas, to be. Regardless of the years of training each individual had to endure in order to perfect his or her craft, there was the inevitable auditioning for the parts, and the endless rehearsals they underwent in order to perform the opera as directed. This was no high school musical. These were professional musicians. You're saying it's acceptable for the residents of Wichita to receive a substandard performance, and that pointing out its flaws is in some way demeaning. To me, that makes you a bigot, saying either that "them thar yokels don't know no better" or that a professionally trained musician's ability to play or sing music that is explicitly written a specific way (and has been for 200+ years) is in doubt just because that musician plays for "them thar yokels." There are few enough individuals who take an individual interest in classical music, in my opinion. As I stated originally, The Marriage of Figaro is by far my favorite. If a curious individual stumbles onto this page and my comment points him or her toward a superior performance - one that he or she has an infinitely better chance of enjoying - then great! I'm sure I won't know about it, but I will have helped engender a better appreciation for some great music. And I will have done it honestly, without worrying about hurting people's feelings because they weren't good enough to be at Glyndbourne. And if that makes me an "ungenerous ass" then so be it. I'm not here to be generous. I'm here to give an honest assessment.

Tim Linda First, you say "Grand" but immediately forget that when talking about their opera. They are professionals. At least give them the respect of expecting a professional performance. For the rest, I think you'll get the gist of it if you read my response to Danny Berry. Since both your responses were similar, I think my reply covers both. Thanks for reading.

Well, it is pretty obvious that you didn't listen to this opera, since from the mixed up lyrics you're somewhat quoting, you're approximating the opening lines of Figaro's entrance in The Barber of Seville, by Rossini. At no point in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro was there a repetition of his name such as you describe. Congratulations, though, on remembering some of your old Looney Tunes favorites from childhood. ;-)

Honestly, what is the point of a comment like this? Does your pretension make you feel better about yourself? It's very true that this is a small city, with what is very likely a tiny arts budget. It's in the middle of America. An optimist could look at this and say that they're doing their very best, and they obviously have an appreciative audience. They are exposing people there to live music, and one of the greatest operas ever written. Even if it is amateurish, why not applaud their enthusiasm and desire to present something beautiful? I guess I really don't understand the point of this kind of criticism.
