Eddie Zarick indeed. There’s something about them. I personally prefer the Mac 250 Entour in look and features but for a light that’s 21 years old. They are pretty solid for dark venues. Great ground package lights!

Nice Video. You are completely right, an old moving light is still a moving light. And the prices really dropped down so it makes it very attractive go get some old professional quality light instead of cheap new ones. Just look at MAC 700s. They are awesome. But the sound (loud fans , motors and end positions of some effect wheels)!!!, weight and size are factors to consider... and they will have issues. But they are servicable. Try servicing a 5 year old budget moving head. You have to hope that you still get spare parts. The chinese manufacurers like to make changes to stuff without documenting it. Although original new Martin spare parts are not cheap... I used to have a bunch of Smart Macs. The dual case is the same as for the 250s and it's more like 80kg. There is no way to stack it by your self. And the bulbs expolde after a while. It's not dangerous but you have to completely clean the fixture after it. That takes some time... Thanks for the video. Greetings from Daniel to Daniel.

Useful video, thank you. I have a question, having seen a few of these lamps for sale at pretty decent prices. I'm looking to do an art installation which would involve illuminating the interior of a building with patterned gobos. A group of lamps would be used for different effects. Do you think the 250 Plus would be sufficiently bright to deal with throws of typically 10-12m? Projection surface is mid grey. Very little ambient light (aiming to do this at night). Thanks in advance!

I grew up using these lights. I liked them at the time, but then I brought a bunch of Mac500s, 550's (not well know!) and 700s and once I got them my view of the Mac250 was that it simply didn't have enough feautures, were not bright enough and wasnt the best for theatre because if they have to compete with fresnels and profiles, they are drowned out.

Hey! Realky liked your video! I would like to purchase a few moving heads, and had a few questions: when you say you can't touch the lamp, for it can explode, does it mean I can't touch the glass or the entire lamp with bare hands? What are the cheaper and better options ? Thanks!
@Danstechworld
@Danstechworld 3 года назад
Hi there, when I say you can't touch the lamp I should have cleared it up by saying the glass, the oils on your fingers leave marks on the bulb that the filament reacts with, therefore shortening the life of the bulb significantly or outright killing it once powered up. By cheaper options are you referring to moving heads or bulbs? For moving heads, plenty of cheap china lights and even good china built lights, I have a lot myself for rentals but you can't beat the dependability of these old fixtures, no they aren't the brightest thing ever but they certainly put up a fight with some of my newer fixtures and in some cases beat on output or features like motorized focus. If on about bulbs for these, unfortunately, you just have to suck it up and pay the price for the Metal Halide lamps are just expensive, and the brighter you go, the price goes with it. Hope this answers your question, one way or another anyway, and thank you for the comment!

I am in the situation where I need to decide between modern day low-mid range moving heads, vs older higher end moving heads like this one. I am thinking of investing in 4 Chauvet DJ Intimidator Spot 260's. We own 2 Chauvet 375z 150watt movers, and they are super bright. The brightness of these movers is helpful when using the prisms, but we don't need their full power when just using the beams themselves. We only have pipe, not truss, to rig them on, which makes me concerned about buying old lights due to their weight and the possibility of additional rigging needs. But there are heaps of functionality that the old fixtures have that the new fixtures do not. The Martin gobo's are far superior, and they have CMY where the Chauvet's just have a colour wheel. And the older fixtures seem to all require a lamp, compared to the LED only power of the Chauvet's. Could anyone share any thoughts? We are a small school theatre, that has lots of small music performances, and some drama and dance performances.
@croissantproductions
@croissantproductions 3 года назад
Well, these old fixtures like the Mac 250s are around 50lbs, so they are pretty heavy, but they are bright, comparable to about a 50 or 60w LED. Feature-wise, these have the best gobos and the best effects in any moving head i have seen, and the other ones like a Mac 550, have a 400w discharge lamp and TONS more features.

a 250 Plus will outdo a 100w LED source, I have a pair of them sat in a rig of 4 Chauvet Spot 350s and the Macs destroy them, even with prisms in place...but at 23KG they aren't light, but they are much better in the long run. You could also go a pair of Macs and a lighter pair of LED, best of both worlds and I rig 4 Entours on dual beam 35mm truss (its not really truss, its crap) but with crank stands, perfectly usable and safe.

@Danstechworld 2 года назад
It’s not the brightness of an older Mac, it’s the build quality, the ability to repair on the fly with nothing more than a flat head screwdriver. The old macs feel like they can take a fall of a flight case and still work (in fact mine have) but new Martin rush lights don’t have that quality feel. I have used most of the new Rush series and yes they are bright but they seem very generic, very plasticky feeling that rattles and sounds tinny. It’s just a copy paste of ADJ and Chauvet, same as most generic Chinese lights. You get martins optics, yes, but the feel of them, they just aren’t built like sh*t brick houses anymore.

If you go into the settings, and set the movement speed of the motors you can get them a little quicker but downside you loose a little bit of accuracy.
