I actually remember seeing this segment on Disney channel in the 90s. Couldn't understand the lines being spoken but the visuals of the two fueding families shooting each other and their angels floating up to the heavens stuck with me. Especially, of their mutual disapproval of their living descendant falling in love each other. However I completely forgot about the ending of a "Divorce with guns" played for laughs
It's a shame this short got censored. I have the Japanese Laserdisc of Make Mine Music and was able to watch the movie uncut, and I gotta say, Martins and the Coys definitely made the film less boring. I'd go as far as to say it's the best short in Make Mine Music, honestly.
For anyone that's interested in all 10 animated segments, this wartime era of a feature is available exclusively on a region 2 DVD format. If you're an owner of a region free Blu Ray or 4K player already, Good Deal. Available to order through Amazon , Amazon 🇬🇧 & ebay. I ordered my copy two hours ago. This transfer that was uploaded is greatly pristine. Great job and Thank you for sharing, Mora,2403
Yeah. Gorgeous enough for her model sheet to be reused for Slewfoot Sue from the Pecos Bill segment of _Melody Time_ and Katrina Von Tassle from the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" segment of _The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad._
Funny that Disney won't release this short now. Back in the mid-80s, they played "Make Mine Music" (1946) in its uncut form on the Disney Channel (I have an old VHS tape of it somewhere).
Because Disney is a company full of FUCKING PUSSIES that's why They edited out The Martins and Coys segment when they re-released Make Mine Music on Walt Disney Gold Collection on VHS and DVD in 2000 Speaking of which I'm surprised that The Whale who Sang Opera is still on the DVD releases seeing as how he gets harpooned at the end I'm happy that segment hasn't been cut but still surprised
@@thing1thing2themediamaniac43 And consider this, it was a 10 year novelty song by the time this short was made and the song went into more graphic detail. _Oh, the Martins and the Coys, They Was Reckless Mountain Boys_ _But Old Grandpa Coy has Gone Where Angels Live_ _When They Found Him on the Mountain_ _He was Bleedin' Like a Fountain_ _'Cause They Punctured Him 'til He Looked Like a Sieve_
Cutting this segment due to 'comedic gun violence' does seem a tad unnecessary, considering that the tragic consequences are portrayed onscreen. When I first saw it, I thought the point of contention was that domestic violence was being played for laughs. Really not sure why they didn't just release the rest of Make Mine Music on Disney Plus with this short excluded or tack on a disclaimer beforehand.
No, it was due to the guns. I remember at the time. Disney+ has edited a lot of vintage stuff. In the film Bullwhip Griffin they've edited out the word "coolie" as "racist."
I bought a VHS tape online of Make Mine Music but this short wasn't on it. I'm from West Virginia where the Hatfield's and McCoy's lived and I think it was dumb of them to cut it out. I don't care about the hillbilly stereotype, it was funny
@@isobo24 haha we had betamax when I was a baby but I don't remember it. I have Disney+ but some of the remasters look too bright so I still like watching video tapes. It's nostalgic
@@richarddavis8863 When released Disney Channel I naively believed that I would watch my old TV series and movies (Tales spin, Perri, Not quite human) big upps. Disney+ has not arrive in México, for your comments I think I will continue with my old tapes too 🤭
I have a Gold Classics DVD copy of Make Mine Music released in early 2000s. It had this segment cut out. If they really were against the segment because of the gunplay, why not simply put MMM using the 2000's Gold Classic DVD version? Because of this one segment, all the other segments are being ignored
@@lunecker if they removed it, it was out of make it more ethically correct. If anything, doing these sorts of cuts costs more money than not touching anything and leaving it as it is. Also, I find it very concerning that you don't understand that a company has to evolves. I can agree that the 2000s Disney movies aren't really good, but the 2010s Disney movies are amongst the better ones they have released (for the most part).
Even with the scene taken out they wouldn't bother putting the rest of making my music up on Disney plus anyway. I mean I managed to get a copy of the gold classic DVD version from the early 2000s and it has this sequence cut out anyway so why not just simply go with this version on Disney plus if they're going to cut out just one scene anyway and leave the other nine scenes in
@@l.salisbury1253 I think he's referring to the fact that when the movie "make mine music" got released on DVD this segment was removed. even though it was the very first segment; if you listen closely you can actually hear the cutoff between the opening credits and the actual second segment of the whole thing
@@huh968 That and the "domestic abuse" ended up keeping it from returning even longer when it was flagged again even after the gun violence was forgiven.
@@Tigressa101 I was about to say I've seen bigger violence in a Spongebob episode, But with the domestic abuse thing going on in this cartoon, Now it makes sense.
@@SuperKitaroShinX Well long before SpongeBob, gun violence even cartoonified was still kind of frowned upon. In fact the Looney Tunes cartoons weren't meant for children back then, they were actually for adults or at least PG where adults had to be present. Now and days, it's nothing of the sort so children can watch it because it's part of the joke of the cartoon.

Hello there. I have The Martins and the Coys short without subtiles, but it is in Spanish. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YeMM2m4D_4A.html There you go the link. Best wishes and regards from Mexico.
Honestly I wouldn’t be skeptical of the censorship of this skit if other films like Peter Pan were Censored or even if a short like Pecos Bill was also censored. But as those properties are still allowed to exist I have the sneaking suspicion that the only reason this is censored is because this is not a popular film and if it were they would still show this short with only some warning at the beginning like they do for other ones. But because Peter Pan and the like are still there on Disney Plus I must conclude that their censorship is more about popularity
Question, I know that this short was based on the actual Hatfields and McCoys feud...but is that feud still going on today? If it's yes, it would seem that both families might have even more to fight over than they did back then; the 2020 election, who first started the Pandemic, Marvel Vs. DC and who knows what else
Representatives from both families appeared on Family Feud in the 1970s. No more animosity, I'm afraid. They've settled their differences. Clearly, the McCoys win out in the end, however. As there aren't any Hatfields on the starship Enterprise in the 2260's AD.
