I have the impression that Marvel no longer knows what its audience is.

And yet they call us men sexist for not liking this movie

This movie should have been a holiday special or something on Disney+ 😂

It seems odd as a "kids" movie it's also very violent. That's one major problem with Disney they have no idea who their audience is.

Okay the only thing I actually might see this M-She-U film for is Khan. Everyone else is an overpowering super woman that makes you hope for whatever villain they go against. I’m always Batman when he faces off ..Superman. But the girl I care about. Khan isn’t Blade! Blade needs to be serious and dark with action.

Wait a minute. Sooooo....why Brie Larson is blaming the men if the movie is made for younger kids? Shouldn't she blaming the kids instead of men?!! Doesnt make ANY sense! 🤷‍♂️

It's not marketed as a kids film and is part of the MCU phase 5 so a D- minus grade is sufficient.

Seeing another woman not being biased and standing up to bad movies is more inspiring than anything this film had to offer. D-

I would say that the "Disneyfication" started earlier with Thor: Love and Thunder. That movie had the same cluttered, nonsensical storytelling and jokes. You can't take Taika Waititi's humor in Thor: Love and Thunder seriously and you can't take Kamala Khan's suffocating fangirling seriously. I would say the actress that plays Kamala is more sweet and endearing than how the character is in the comics, in the comics written by G. Willow Wilson and created/edited by Sana Amanat she's just insufferable, it's all about islam and her literally wanting to have blonde hair and blue eyes and be a mini Captain Marvel.

This was a way more honest and helpful review than what IGN just put out.

My initial impression after watching the first trailer was that this was like the MCU version of Disney's Freaky Friday where the main characters switch places. Your comments essentially solidified my thoughts.

Yeah I’m sick of hearing from other reviewers “ ITS FUN!!”. I want the movies like Winter Soldier and Civil War . Those weren’t “ fun” movies , they were great !

The weird part is how captain marvel acted in every movie we've seen her in prior. She came across as someone with a no-nonsense wooden personality. Like someone that takes everything ultra serious. She was running around saving planets after the blip. Now they suddenly have her acting like a cartoon? Weird. That personality shift gave me whiplash. Ima sue disney to recoup by chiropractor bills.

"OMG! How did I get tricked into watching a Hannah Montana movie?" Hilariously summarized. The premise you originally described a teen hero being thrust into an adult Avengers level situation is exactly what made Spider-Man work in the MCU. I got a little tired of the whole "OMG Mr. Stark" schtick. I felt it was more of an Iron-Boy than Spider-Man. But it was tolerable. I knew this one was not my movie. It's like every new Star Wars and Star Trek cartoon has that Total Drama Island feel. Including the My Adventures with Superman. These are not kids' stories. But they are making all of the characters child-like. The blank expressions, the big eyes, everyone has that stupid perky speech pattern. Teen Titans was a great show then reworked into the same format with the stupid fart joke version of Teen Titans Go. I hate it. The Marvels is, in my opinion, the first live action film to take on that persona / characterization. Thank you, but nooo thank you. All right?

Now THAT’S a very interesting and valid perspective, one in which many reviewers are not commenting about. And that is, by purposeful design or sheer lack of who their audience actually are, the movie was made for children, and more specifically, females in their early teens.

Never go full Disney!

That annoying "like we're on a team" line is the most original way I've seen anyone try to explain the tone of this movie. What is odd though, if you watch the Official Teaser Trailer, they actually use a much less annoying take. 🤔

A very insightful review which helped me understand who was this film made for, especially with the baffling trailers and subsequent cat marketing. I think Disney is in for a rude awakening when the box office bombs because The Barbie Movie audience is unlikely to go watch this mess.

Disney should start putting appropriate ages on their movies like they do their toys. I mean I am fine with them making a kids film but they should be honest about it and let people know what they are paying for up front. You are seriously one of the best reviewers on YT. Should have way more subs.

I remember when the original She-Ra series came out I was hugely excited about it because they had released action figures of all the characters, and the villains especially were amazing. Then the show premiered, and the villains were all acting goofy rather than evil so they wouldn’t frighten girls. I had the same reaction to Nick Fury in Captain Marvel, and this looks like more of the same.

The Marvels - payed by a stupid friend 🤣. Kamala Khan = OMG, OMG, OMG!...while fighting with a scarf on planet Aladdin (I mean Aladna); Monica Rambeau = BGM! (Black Girl Magic) from the... Rice University Carol Danvers = Basmati Blues (singing/dancing) on planet Aladdin. Cats! Oh, and Disney said "Fck China! Hello, South Korean mo-hooo-ney!" They cast Park Seo-joon as...Prince Yan D'Aladna...Captain Marvel's...husband! Singing and dancindg and bilingual (he also can speak without singing) husband! Captain Marvel is a Disney Princess now!

Give it a D, because its not a stand alone movie, its a movie as part of an universe already aimed for adults. You cant do John Wick 1 and 2 for adults, and then 3 for kids. It doesnt work like that.

It sounds like Marvel not only still has a villain problem but now they don't know who their audience is for their films.

Best review ive seen. Spoke about all the points relevant to me. I was annoyed by that character in the trailer but even all the reviewers who hate the film said that girl is the best part of the movie. 😂

I think you've made an insightful point that a LOT of the predominantly adult reviewers are overlooking - Disney have made a kids Marvel movie. Consequently they ought to be reviewing a kids film from an adult perspective whereas they've been treating it as a standard MCU entry and misunderstanding it. An interesting theory. Where you've lost me a little bit though is giving it a 'C' rating when you appear to think that - as a kids movie - it's actually rather good. Surely a 'B' or 'A' is more in order.

Appreciate your opinion. Brutally honest and clearly laying out the one of the biggest issue with Disney/ Marvel. Ever since Disney has acquired Marvel it has been slowly turning into the Disney club. It’s designed to move away from the audience that brought them billions if not trillions of dollars and keep fanbaiting them with these garbage titles. This is definitely being done on purpose which is even more bizarre. Imo the term “diversity & inclusion” has almost single handily destroyed the franchise. Like Loki just did we need to change the Formula.

You nailed it. I left thinking, ‘this is like they let a pre-pubescent girly girl write the script & they had no edits.’ Every stereotypical female trope was incorporated. Girl power! Lol omg. Your review is rock solid.

That’s pretty much how I felt. I didn’t hate it because I was thinking it wasn’t an awful film for little girls. Then again, it wasn’t a FANTASTIC film for that target either. I actually found the first third of the movie , when the characters are mostly talking to each other with little moments of action, quite enjoyable. But when the adventure and action started then it became surprisingly uninteresting. The CGI is far from perfect, the gags became a little too cringy and the serious parts were not very engaging. The very ending was kind of ok, both the last scene and the post credits scene, although we don’t know how good or bad they will develope all that in the future.

There are two possibilities: Either they wanted to make a movie for a niche audience of little girls, OR they wanted to make a mass-appeal movie and failed miserably. Disney are ABSOLUTELY not going to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to make Marvel movies that appeal to a minority of the audience. They HAVE to appeal to a wide audience, and therefore it is clear this was just a massive failure.

What to grade The Marvels?? *SIMPLE.* It was rated PG-13 for Parental Guidance over the age of 13. It wasn't rated for 7 year olds. *D --*

Leading up to the release, I've heard a lot of projections that this film was going to flop. Don't know why your review appeared on my suggestions but I was curious what you'd have to say. Appreciate the honest review and after hearing it, I may take my nieces to see it. It's obviously not for me but I've been putting together a list of movies we loved as kids, that are fun and teach important life lessons and hopefully this movie has those traits. If that's what Disney was going for, it seems like they really missed the mark by not marketing it as such.

It’s sad what’s happened to a once great Universe(MCU). Always great seeing the Queen fire out the common sense.

I don't know what to rate the film as I haven't seen it. If it is as you describe, a kids film, well that could be good............. for kids. It makes me think that maybe they promoted it wrong. Maybe they should have prompted it as a kid's film. That could have made the film successful for that audience. I used to love the Disney channel shows for kids, on their cable tv channel, so long as I knew what I was watching. And Disney was always a kid oriented company in the first place (not so much Marvel though). That did get me thinking though, wouldn't it be confusing for kids to come into the theater, in the middle of an already established franchise, with multiple characters that aren't even well known? One other thing relating to that, I have heard that there is a cameo by a "gay" character, Phoenix. If I think of this movie as for kids, then it gets really disturbing to me, that kids will be exposed to this. I think that was always the big fear that people had relating to Disney and woke ideology. People were afraid that Disney would try to brainwash their kids. Even though the film might not address the gay issue directly, it's even more sinister. What if a kid becomes interested in this Phoenix character, and only later do they find out, after already becoming invested in the character? Do you see what I mean? That would make this very sneaky brainwashing for kids. There is already an all female cast of superheroes and main villains, which already had people calling this M-She-U, and complaining about feminism. In the trailer I saw, Nick Fury mentions some "black girl magic". That means there is at least a minor ideology of racial pandering. Once again these are ideas I don;t want kids exposed too. I don''t want kids targeted for brainwashing. It's just before I didn't know that this movie was aimed at kids.

Finally! Finally! Someone telling the real truth! This is great commentary because she addresses who it is aimed at, not the old Marvel fanbase, but young Disney goers. Thank you for your honesty, and who this is for!!! I have decided to follow you from now on!

Marvel has come down to this? They are just outright saying " Last one. Done. Over with. No more.' Who in the world at the board meeting would ok this? Just throwing $300 mil down the drain.

Marvels films haven't had any emotional depth since they killed off Tony Stark and retired Captain America. Dropping the X Men and the Fantastic Four into the mix soon won't help either.

I went to see this last night with my wife. I would agree wholeheartedly with you that my kids would enjoy this movie. Especially my 6 year old. They would totally love the cats scene. The big problem for me is having to watch it again if I bring them to the theater. There were so many wtf moments. My wife turned to me so many times to ask how it was possible for things to happen, and I had no answer. I could not explain how nonsensical it was.

"I don't even think I should be reviewing it" "This is for kids" What a roundabout way of saying it's a cinematic turd that wasted millions of dollars. F, for Flushed and Forgotten.
