Interesting that back then a Congressman might get sidelined by a 15 year old story that was "heresay"; yet today a presidential candidate that has dozens of Federal indictments from several Grand Juries is still considered a viable candidate! Amazing how times have changed! And how disconnected from reality the electorate has become!
Mary is so wrong. If she's supposed to be in some sense a "newswoman" then as a professional she cannot censor the news out of personal interest. If she's just associate producer of a TV show, then content is not her decision, but Lou's. Either way she's being childish and unprofessional. If Lou had asked her to write or report a story that was contrary to her conscience, like reporting that a war crime didn't happen when it did, then resigning would make sense. But resigning because your boss makes a sound and appropriate professional decision is just childishly unreasonable.
The disclosure about the congressman was off the record and a personal moral dilemma she asked him about - and he used it against her. He violated her trust.
The old Dick Van Dyke show was so much better. Mary Tyler Moore was cold compared to Laura Petrie. I didn't find the characters funny, I found them caddy and snarky.
Lou should have fired Mary for insubordination and aberrant behavior. Lou should have called the FBI on Mary and had her arrested for racketeering and conspiracy charges. Mary belongs in jail!! 😵
