First off the engine is a V6 and nobody who calls themselves a real supercar petrolhead cares for that kind of engines in supercars, not even in the Ford GT. Worst of all it is a turbocharged engine. Second it doesnt have a manual option. Third it is a heavy car. Fourth the back of the car looks like a regular car. Fifth the interior looks generic. And last it is not a limited production car. Thats why prices will decrease in the forseable future.
@@mariellarojas8562 not even the Ferrari 296? Not even the Mercedes-AMG ONE? To be fair, my feelings are similar to yours but these are the times we're in.
@@sportzntouring The Mercedes should be an exception to the rule because it is an F1 engine for the road but they added the electric motors therefore it is a failure. The Ferrari 296 doesnt even make sense since there is the F8 right now with a v8 turbocharged engine.
Looking at depreciation heroes, I noticed that there are 2023 McLaren Arturas starting at £135k on Autotrader now. That includes 4 years remaining of the factory service and warranty plan. £100k off for a year old car!. Certainly worth Ant trying one of those.
The problem with the Mclaren is will the company be around in 3 years time considering how much money they lose per year. It is only that the arab owners have excess money thay keeps them going. if they decide to sell then I doubt anyone will by the company. Same question goes for Maserati.....
James having a meltdown on Ant's preference of more front splitter for MC20 is just hilarious. Also, James' patent-pending three-point hillstart torture test is important, not just to assess car's ability to be controlled by the means of throttle, gearbox, clutch, brakes and visibility, but also the driver's capability of controlling said cars. Driving test should include that, I think. BTW about the NSX, there's this Thermal Orange Pearl NSX at AutoTrader listed for GBP250k. I think people started to realize just how good it is and how ahead of its time the NSX is. And maybe because we know there will be nothing else like it from Honda in the future. Also that Thermal Orange Pearl looks stunning.
Yeah, although in the case of many modern cars, like this, you've got no manual handbrake and, no clutch pedal, so you're entirely reliant on the hillstart assist software to electronically manage both on a hillstart. You've just got to solve the problem with more throttle.
It's certainly a very beautiful car, it's just a shame about the lack of engine noise and interior quality that doesn't quite meet expectations considering the price. I would certainly consider the 488 to be a safer purchase currently, with reference to depreciation, as MC20 will most likely continue to lose a higher % of value in comparison. I would also consider the 488 to be the better built car and have the superior engine, build quality and ownership experience.
I just start from the assumption that it is an Italian car and thus will have constant mechanical problems and cause to you to constantly hemorrhage money because it was deliberately designed to make you hemorrhage money.
Followed a black one of these the other week, beautiful looking car and massive road presence. But whats with the new supercars sounding crap? One of the things I personally want in a sports car is Amazing engine sound.
@JayEmm@Friends, I love Maserati’s and own the “final” GTS which I purchased new four years ago. The main reason for the brand’s infamous depreciation curve is their sales and after-sales experience. Like the NSX, they will sell you a £300k car but treat you no different than a customer who’s purchased a £30k car. The fact that Maserati’s are sold alongside Alfas in the same showroom says it all (Ferrari never made this mistake).
Cars like these don't depreciate like this in Canada due to the rarity of these cars over here. Our climate doesn't make these cars a daily choice, or even a year-round weekend choice, like they can be in the UK. In one way that's kind of sad, but in another way, my C8 Corvette is holding is value better than any other place in North America.
The base structure of this 90 degree v6 is incredibly similar to the late 60s designed V6 for the Citroen SM and Maserati Merak. That engine was raced at lemans in 73 and 74 in the Ligier JS2. In 74 it finished 8th overall. The Maserati engine it ran was an experimental 4 valve 90 degree v6 (Merak engine but with 4 valve heads) making 400hp at almost 11,000rpm. Alfieri was a genius.
I've seen the prototype Formula 2 version of that engine (still sitting in a farmhouse in Emilia Romagna) which has individual exhaust ports for each valve for maximal scavenging. It therefore has six tiny headers per side of the block and looks like a tiny V12 to the untrained eye!
@@flyingphoenix113 That is fabulous! I have seen photos of that 4 valve engine. The 4v version finished 8th overall at Lemans in 74 and won the tour de france outright. It was a great engine but ran very hot. Maserati made maybe a dozen or so. The final engine they made was never picked up by Ligier in 75 due to the oil crisis, so it still sits as-new with the owner in western France who obtained it from Maserati. I would love to acquire one if that owner in Emilia Romagna is willing to part with it. Is it with the Panini family in their museum?
I own a MC 20 and I absolutely love it ! Had Astons Ferrari's ect brilliant engine and gearbox comfortable beautiful to look at plus I have never seen another one on the road since I purchased it ! Ferraris maclarens Astons two a penny😊 😊
Part of the reason for glacial depreciation is that they’re massively overpriced to begin with. Sounds really poor due to V6 and petrol particulate filter. They’ll be available for £100K in not too long
For the supercar guy whom has tried it all, MC20 or NSX. The rarity will draw attention. Saw a white MC20 here in Dublin a few years ago, looked mega. MC20 is a supermodel.
This car started life as an Alfa 6C about 8 years ago, then it was given to Maserati 2 years later, was initially shown in 2019, and eventually came back to Alfa as the 33 Stradale 1 year ago. I believe the F1 tech heads were intended to represent a tangible fruit of the meaningless Alfa Romeo title sponsoring of Sauber F1, that's why they make no sense on a Maserati.
Capristo did an exhaust... Otherwise, get in touch with Aros Marmitte in Pian Camuno, Brescia in Italia. I'm sure they'll sort you out with a custom made one .
I'm not sure they can fix the sound of this. They can make it louder but not change the quality much. I've listened to several and they're just not quite able to make it sound better.
That mazza is drop dead gorgeous. Real proper head turner. The inside you can tweak and change to your likes if you have 5-10 k spare. Just customise it with an OEM feel. Can change the exhaust as well for 5grand.
Theres got to be something that can make the MC20 sound better. I think despite being so muted it still has an agressive tone underneath that wants to be heard.
there is an all black one on a dealers lot near me . Its actually a very beatiful car when you see it in person . I like it . This car may hold its value . something about it .
I love the shape, I had an order for a Cielo but backed out after I saw the depreciation. I will be watching out for this one. Who knows maybe in 2 years there will be one in my Garage?
Love the look of the MC20. Proper baller. Been a few questions about the ride but didn’t seem to bother you. The R8 GT has the potential to be more than a new super car in 20 years time I think. The best version of a brand sensation in its day
The 2011/2012 R8GTs are so underrated and undervalued. It's a different thing for sure. Let's see if people realise how special it is in future. Time will tell.
Enjoying this series!! Will be interesting to see what Ant buys. Been looking at similar cars - 720s is amazingly appealing and outstanding in so many ways but a bargain because of the McLaren issues, MC20 is unfortunately ruined by the sound, 458 was let down by the steering and brakes, 488 seems sensible but haven't driven, Exige 410 was everything I want from a car but the ground clearance might bother me and then road cars that wouldn't work on track but have glorious engines: V12 vantage, F12 or R8 V10 plus from the 2016 era. A year ago went from a 991 GT3 to a 992 Turbo S as I had a baby on the way, launch control seduced me and I thought it would cover all bases. It has and on Cup2s actually destroyed many average driven 992 GT3s on track. But the sound or lack there of has left a big hole in my heart! 😪
Just an idea. Is it worth looking at something like a Lancia Delta or R5 turbo. I’ll admit they don’t do the same thing as the R8 but they drive well and are more practical, even if they’re a childish choice. A Clio V6 may be worth a look to.
Good to know. It depends on the roads taken on those 4800 miles I guess. I know a few roads that it would struggle on. But I'd get the splitter and side skirts anyway 😁
Have you seen ProducerMicheal's video "Taking Delivery Of My New Supercar" where he takes delivery of his completely customized MC20? It is incredible!
I tried different sound solutions on mine: Novitec (turbo-back, Capristo and Custom. Ended up with Capristo GPF (deleted) emulator cat connected to factory cat and custom 3--->5 inch Megaphones to the tail pipe with an interesting result. No more turbo boost re-circulation sounds at full throttle (with the exception of a whisper at times) due to significantly less restriction by the GPF delete and megaphones causing the gas volume exchange rate in the engine to use up all the boosted air from the turbos and beg for more. No- tune water meth injection in this car also significantly helps it because of the high Turbo boost values and extra-capable combustion efficiency of the Twin spark/ twin chamber at high revs: a victory for improved volumetric engine efficiency (I estimate 645 HP and 550 ft lbs improvement which can be felt) But now the exhaust note is just louder and the whistles are gone (which I do not miss). With this set up, I best enjoy driving it in sport-automatic-medium suspension. Medium suspension because while the soft setting is better on undulations at low speed, going fast at this setting make it pogo, wallow and impart the sensation of bottoming out. At Medium, the jitteriness at slow speeds disappears at high speeds and becomes compliant while limiting travel. I am learning to keep the go pedal closer to the boost explosion threshold for more speed drama. Pedal to the metal through all shift points invokes more 'jail time' rapidity but if not followed through, it does produce a unique mechanical 'rev-hang whirr' that i hear very clearly now that the whooshes are gone and this sound is complex in character and quite exhilarating. I am also acquiring appreciation for the low to medium rpm diesel truck bass roar and perfectly commensurate high torque and instant lag-free shove at low speed throttle stabs. The wide twin double wishbone suspension regulated stance really establishes a high speed turn confidence which does not bore because Dallara also engineered a High lateral G shove sensation for the enthusiast's pleasure: something I cannot say for the soft spongy but better track performing Ferrari GTB (which I test drove-excellent car).
Clearly, the MCXtrema proves these engines can make 700+hp quite easily. The MC20 GT2 and MCXtrema get the larger Garrett turbos which are supposedly good for 800+hp, but I don't think anybody knows the limits of the stock internals yet.
@@flyingphoenix113 With the internals as a question mark, would it not been better for Maserati to go the axial flow electric motor route together with the GT2 turbos and tune, rather than go all electric with the Folgore?
How is the suspension super stiff? What???? My first impression was that it was softer then my tesla model 3 perf, my BMW x4m comp, seemed similar to a z51 vette. What am I missing.
I get what you mean about the interior -- it's not what you might expect from such an exotic marque. In the 80's, my father had a Maserati Merak, in metallic red with silver Campagnolo wheels and a crazy gold velour/half-leather interior. It rarely started without a lot of messing about, but when it was going it was fantastic! Around London, and out into the countryside were trips, as a schoolboy, I'll never forget! Love the story about Ferrari respecting Maserati as their old racing rival. :0)
It wished it was an Italian HONDA NSX ! It's not comparable to a H O N D A NSX ..... Italian looks and Italian crappie engineering 😁😂😂 Do NOT believe these amateurs' conclusions who get paid to talk only positive about the car because this car has been tested by others and came bad out the tests. It looks good but there's still a lot of work that needs to be done to make it a good and SAVE sportscar let alone a daily usable sports car like the HONDA and PORSCHE are.
The beloved 911(not the gt series) doesn't have a particular nice sound but no-one seems to care. I think that mc20 is a wonderful car in the wrong price......
One of you is a man and the other one not so much. A stiff suspension is needed for body roll, big dips, and Canyons. Every person I see with a soft suspension suffers on demanding roads when the car is pushed. I can't tell you how many videos I see on Misha's RU-vid channel that scrape and rub because guys like you want a suspension that feels like a Buick. Give me road feel and a car that can handle it.
How hard is it to get a C8 Corvette in the UK? A Z06 might be the ticket if you can deal with the steering wheel being on the left (maybe Jack Holmes from SavageGeese will sell you his; be aware though, he is a gorilla behind the wheel).
Jay in full flow on "man maths" as to why buying one is a good idea financially. To me it looks like a gamble with a high ante and the odds massively against you. But the car is lovely and just driving it will cheer you up about the hundred grand plus that evaporated overnight. Cheers
Throw into the list for Ant an older and more raw sports car, something like a Noble or TVR. Something that takes time to learn to drive or it will kill you. Think F12 TDF vibes.
I agree with Jay... the new maserati ISNT A MASERATI AT ALL. Maserati MUST have a V8. Every maserati I have ever owned and infact even thr correct maserati is a V8! Yes. The ferrari twin turbo V8! V6....??? Pssshhhhhh
I always consider skipping videos about the MC20. It bores me to the point of nodding off. Give me a real Maserati, with a great sounding V8, but this thing they can keep to themselves. Violent appreciation is fully deserved, imho.
It’s based on the statue of Neptune in the middle of Bologna, Italy when Mario Maserati and his brothers founded the company in 1914 to go racing. It represents strength and quality and speed and performance. Also it’s representative of Neptune the God of the sea from Roman times which means strength and vigor. So I’m sure Burger King was really in their minds when they decided to use this symbol for they’re company lol
