Casting Jim Carrey saved them a small fortune. He learned to talk normal with the giant prosthetic teeth, and his flexible face meant a lot of typically CG expressions he could just...do normally. Also, in Bruce Almighty, that was just Jim making a face. No CG at all. He's done the Clint Eastwood face in interviews.
You're right about the CG, but they did use a little bit of physical make up with a facial bump prosthetic to mildly amplify features, and make it look almost like they went back in time; and performed a facial transplant. Jim Carrey's contortionist abilities are amazing, and seeing his original Clint Eastwood impersonation for the first time as a kid, was mind blowing. I'm glad he came back to us in the Sonic films and I'm hoping we get some more of his particular comedy films from him very soon...
For a 1994 film the effects they pulled off were just incredible. The whole transformation sequence to The Mask was like Jekyll and Hyde in the funniest way possible. That Jokeresque performance was so well done and Jim's physical comedy was integral to the overall story. It really had that slapstick feel to it.
Not since Who Framed Roger Rabbit was I as impressed with animation / surreal effects and live action blending so well. Both firm favourites for other reasons too. Great stuff this movie!
@@billbill6094 Well, "The Mask" was her first commercial movie. I don't think she did any before that, other than that modeling work for a S&M fashion lingerie editorial, which was videotaped and later was a cause of a lawsuit she filed.
Believe it or not, this is the first movie Cameron' Diaz ever acted in. Came out of the gates swinging with her talents being shown here. She took a hiatus from acting from the constant busy scheduling after the Annie Remake in 2014, although she's starring in something called Back in Action that's in post-production.
my cousins and i wore out my grandma’s vhs copy. still remember every line. this, liar liar, me myself & irene, series of unfortunate events, the grinch… jim carrey really was the staple of my childhood. he’s truly a treasure
The Mask comic is VERY dark and VERY violent. I've been waiting for them to make a true-to-tone remake of this movie for decades. It's the perfect source material for it.
@Ashurman666 actually they said there are going to make an animated series that closer to the comic, and there're rumors that Jim Carrey going to voice the role
@@dylansanders1148 That's a different subject. It can work as an animated series but not as live action one, Hollywood would never do something like that
Dark Horse did Hellboy, Timecop, 300, and Mystery Men, which were all made into movies from the early 90s to late 00s. They're all underrated, if you ask me!
My favorite childhood, Jim Carey movie, no doubt. His manorism, exaggerated expression, and dancing, this movie has everything a child wood enjoy. It was such a good time. I'm so happy to see you enjoyed it.
38:17 I absolutely love when a reactor gets a movie reference via the movies they’ve watched on their channel, they’re always so excited and it’s adorable 😂
The “Mask’s” powers are similar to that of Popeye or Looney Tunes, in pop culture and particular circles such as comics and anime, the ‘power’ is referred to as Toon Force. Powers that essentially break the rules of the reality they’re displayed in :)
Nah, i wouldn't say Mask's power is similar to Popeye, because Popeye only got physical boost (after consuming Spinach). Where as the power of Mask depends on feelings and thoughts, aka., it's a really powerful and broken reality-manipulating power.
@Sup_D and that is exactly what Toon Force is... "a really powerful and broken reality-manipulating power.". Check out the Mask comic books, yes they exist, or watch the Death Battle between Deadpool and the Mask for way more info.
@ManLikeBetty Well said bro, not many people actually know the power of the Mask is called the Toon Force. If you haven't already, check out the Death Battle between Deadpool and the Mask, it is very informative and a wild Battle.
This movie highlighted Jim Carrey’s acting chops for me. He can be zany, sure, but I really enjoyed the more dramatic moments with him. I love the framing of the shots too, and let’s not forget the music and the dancing. A very well crafted movie, in every way. It shouldn’t have worked, but it did. Not an easy thing to pull off.
I knew you would love this movie. The Mask, to me, still holds up due to 2 main things: Jim Carrey being the most Jim Carrey he can be and the cartoony/Looney Tunes nature of the film. I never noticed the It's A Wonderful Life parallels before but now that you've mentioned them, I can't unsee them. thanks for the reaction, John! 😃
33:23 Yeah. It nails the emotionality needed for a lot of the more serious scenes. One of my personal favorites is when Mask Dorian says, “There’s always time. For one last kiss.” There’s just something about the way he says it that’s sad or sorrowful. I love it.
The bit where you said “isn’t there a film where this actually happens?” when he’s hanging above the printing press is from one of the Pierce Brosnan James Bond films and he goes “They’ll print anything these days”
@@reconsoldier135 yeah, and due to the mask's reality warping powers, the papers that are printed after feature a picture of Peggy with her arms up defensively, with a headline noting that this famous journalist died.
This was one of those films I rewatched like crazy as a young person back in the day! I love this film, it’s pure nostalgia now for me. Glad you loved it too!
Jim Carey Can actually make his face look like Clint Eastwood with mo prosthetics too..He did that in one of his standup routines very early on I think too
I grew up around this movie I watched this way too many times when it came out and me and my sisters always quoted it 😂 Very happy to see your reaction
Cameron Diaz was supposed to play Sonya Blade the following year but couldn't commit due to injury while filming , so Brigette Wilson replaced her for the 1995 film.
The Mask shows up 18 minutes into the picture. Funny thing is a lot of things happen in under 30 minutes. It moves fast and every scene is entertaining.
Nah John you straight up pulled it off I think your Jim Carey impression especially in this movie was spot on 😂 I so love that Coy just popped up to let us know 😂😂
Maybe it’s because I’m old, but I always find it so hard to believe that a movie like the mask or say Robocop hasn’t been seen by these guys. So many they haven’t seen were staples of mine growing up.
The movie is not really that old. Millenials and Gen Z grew up with it. Everyone knows it is popular but not everyone has watched it just like how I know Jim Carrey played Grinch but I have never actually watched the movie. I plan to.
My great grandfather worked for our local Studebaker warehouse(s) here in northern Indiana and every year during non-winter months there's a monthly classic drive-in meet every first Saturday. Every Studebaker Champion I've ever seen in person has been in immaculate condition. It took some serious neglect for that 1951 Champion to be as run down as it was (9:57) + Hollywood engineering for it to have fallen apart on the bridge like it did. Last year was the first time I saw a convertible variation. Two of them, one bright red and a white one. Our 4-level museum has the Commander as seen in _The Muppet Movie_ from 1979 complete with Fozzie Bear and Kermit.
The comic this is based on is a lot like the movie, only with much, MUCH more graphic violence. Imagine the crazy things old Warner Bros cartoons did to each other and apply that to real human bodies. Like The Mask takes a car muffler and shoves it all the way into a guys throat.
Also Stanley in the comics is far less likeable. It's one of the few examples where I'd argue the film adaptation is superior to the page source material
I love the scene when The Mask sings Cuban Pete. It's so funny and very Broadway-esque. I really really love the bit toward the end where he appears over the bar and pulls a Clint Eastwood with that line from Dirty Harry. "Now you have to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya....punk?"
Seeing Cameron Diaz in this movie awakened something in me lol. Then they made her get 90's model skinny and it made me sad for her because she was already gorgeous. I already loved classic cartoons when this movie came out and I went into full Swing music fan mode after I watched it about a dozen times in the theater.
It’s crazy that you haven’t seen this! This is one of my all time favorite comedies. So hard to beat this goofy movie. If you watch son of the mask though then don’t have any high expectations because son of the mask is nowhere near this good. Also side note: one of my favorite parts in this movie is when Jim Carrey is doing that Cuban Pete dance and he has the conga line going and while he’s at the front he does this weird spin move that looks kind of odd and I’ve always wondered how he did that move because it looks almost unnatural.
In case you're wondering how Peggy got away Scott free the answer is she didn't. There was a deleted scene where she was killed in a brutal way basically Dorian throws her into the printing press and the papers that print are in her own blood it was extremely dark I recommend seeing and reacting to the deleted scene
@@solrachernandez3389Because the comics are way darker than the film. The Mask actually killed people too. Stanley also gets killed in the comics, and a lot of other characters get to wear the mask, including Kelaway.
I was 7 when this movie came out, probably 8 or 9 when I saw it. I am fairly certain that Cameron Diaz in this movie is what smacked me outta my “girls are icky” phase
Best Dark Horse Comics are the original Aliens comics that continue Nicks' and Newt's story. I remember the cop guy from Animal House. The scene you were thinking of where a guy falls into a printing press and it's really bloody is probably 007 Tomorrow Never Dies. And I think this was Cameron Diez's first role ever and she's never looked hotter.
3:32 that man right there was a hilarious stand up comic by the name of Richard Jeni. He was so dam funny. He wrote jokes for other comics including Chris Rock, as well as fueling his own stand up shows, and short lived TV comedy series "Platypus Man". He suffered from depression that led him to ultimately take his own life. So sad. I miss his jokes.
The Mask and Myself both turn 30 this year and I’m quoting the entire movie while watching this. Fun fact in a deleted scene Peggy Brandt gets thrown into the machine they threaten to throw Stanley into
I was in elementary school when a student brought this movie to the school and a teacher let us watch a part of it. I was way too you to watch something like this back then, and the transformation sequence left me feeling very uneasy. My mom was not happy and made a phone call to the school later that day.
for a mother to call the school because the Mask of all movies happened to make you feel uneasy is a very unfortunate red flag for how your home-life must be. i hope you turned out alright
@@Sanzaru123 ...My family is and always has been perfectly functional. My mom just didn't like the fact that they had shown a movie at school that was well above our age limit.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. It came out when I was 4. I didn't understand any of the adult humor until I was much older, and I'd watched it 1000 times by that point.
23:31 - Until you said, "Bombshell Explodes" by saying that paper headline again, I never caught that it had a direct meaning about her, but also foreshadows what comes later in the movie. I don't know if it was intentional, but I find it funny now. Also, Corridor Digit reviewed the CGI in this movie and said it's absolutely astonishing for the year it came out and what they had to pull off. Jim learned to talk with the teeth in to make it more fluid and they were originally only supposed to be seen for silent scenes. His makeup took 4 hours to put on, even though it looked simple.
This was directed by Chuck Russell, who also directed A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. This was also Cameron Diaz's film debut. And Spawn was Image Comics, not Dark Horse
I love how this movie is the reverses of the usual trope, the hot gangster woman that betrays the hero while the plucky reporter is the hero's side kick :>
Betty Brandt is a Spider-Man character. In the comics and earlier movies she works at The Daily Bugle. In the Tom Holland films she is the school reporter.
For US comics, DC and Marvel were "the big 2" splitting ~70% market share, but Image and Dark Horse came 3rd and 4th through the 90s, with DH appearing first in the 80s. Dark Horse specialized in a lot of liscensed properties such as Terminator, Aliens, Predator, and originated the AvP concept, all of which were really good. They also had a lot of darker creator-owned stuff like Mike Mignola's Hellboy. Image, on the other hand, were 7 artists who split from Marvel to form their own company and each had a flagship superhero title (like Spawn). But while they made a big initial splash, there's been a lot of drama between them over the decades.
I had the original VHS for this film back in the day. Also the 90s animated series with Robert Paulson and Tim Curry The Mask: The Animated series continuing from the film is underrated. Chuck Russell's best film in my opinion and also Cameron Diaz's debut.
@@Fmanzo10 Video Cassettes back in the 80, 90s. I used VCRs to by putting VHS tape into it to watch it. If wanted to watch the film from the beginning you use a rewinder move the tape back from right side to left side. Look it up on google, you will know what I am talking about.
Please react to "Mask" with Eric Stoltz and Cher which is about a severely disfigured teen and his mom played by Cher. It's essentially the modern day version of The Elephant Man which you should also react to. Both are award-winning films.
I used to watch this in my cousin Melissa's room upstairs in the house that I've lived in Queens, New York!!! I was just 6 or 7 at the time, and to this day, it's STILL one of my top favorite movies of the 90's!!!!! I love this, the 2 Ace Ventura movies, and other biggies that Jim Carrey has done. Huge fan of his 'til my last breath and beyond!!!!!🤣
Fun facts: the teeth that "the mask" has are not cgi, they are real teeth that Jim wanted to wear so bad that he learned how to talk with them in And Jim saved them from using a lot of cgi cause the crew said he was "surprisingly flexible and sporadic"
I love how much you guys love movies. True fans of the art of cinema. As for the moment in 42:36, you're thinking of James Bond Pierce Brosnan killing a henchman like that in Tomorrow Never Dies(great movie).
