It was genius of the protesters to barricade themselves inside this site on the 30th of April, the same date that protesters of the Vietnam war did in 1968. The fact that cops are repeating the shamed and frowned upon history of storming the building and arresting protesters was a masterful demonstration by the students.

Just graduated from Columbia in December and the threat of the NYPD had always been there. They really went full throttle because graduation ceremonies which they only have one time a year and people spend a lot of money flying in to participate in happen next week. Funny enough my graduation ceremony happens next week and on the 15th for commencement. The building they took over with Hamilton hall and it’s right where people would be sitting for graduations as well. Been in that building a lot and it’s smack dab right in the front middle of campus. people also don’t realize just how many students are at Columbia because when you count undergrad and graduate it’s nearly 40,000 students. They would be okay with Zionist protests but always had more intimidation for Palestinian protests I could literally talk about this for an hour on the discrepancies I saw between how people were treated, and how police would target black students that were a part of these protest to. There’s an app called sidechat when we were all talk about this as well. They literally shut down the entire campus for the Palestinian protest to increase antagonism against him and dislike so people Can’t even go eat bc of this. The media bias is also insane, because the real threat on campus are Zionist students and the incredible amount of Zionist, funding and power that is held not only at the institution, because Columbia is a Zionist institution, but also in terms of the businesses that directly recruit at Columbia as well. They literally brought the doxxing truck there. Only one side is doxxing people in publicly, calling for individual people to be harmed. This silenced and don’t publicize the Jewish students voices for peace on campus that were working directly with the Palestinian students and don’t talk about the threat. Zionism has on the campus because that’s what people actually felt threatened by. Also, the real reason Columbia won’t divest is because they plan on opening up a campus in Tel Aviv

*Correction* The people on site at UCLA were unarmed private security. They were not police. The police were called almost immediately by both protesters and UCLA officials but were slow to respond. UCLA officials decried the violence and said they had requested help from the Los Angeles Police Department, but it took 3 hours before CHP and police arrived. Per a statement from the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, “There must be a full investigation into what occurred on campus last night. Those involved in launching fireworks at other people, spraying chemicals and physically assaulting others will be found, arrested and prosecuted, as well as anyone involved in any form of violence or lawlessness.” Two separate campus reporters at UCLA were assaulted and beaten despite not being involved in the protest itself. They should have known the pro-Israel counter-protesters would take their cues from Netanyahu and the IDF and their reign of terror against those who are the press.

I am pretty sure there is a test general public can take to become a police officer, and if they do too well on this exam, they do not accept that person into the police force. Someone sued in 2000, but it was thrown out because smart people are not a protected class. Anyone know if this is still a thing in 2024?

The part that infuriates me the most is the cop sitting down with the heaviest industrial chains known to man and the tiniest $15 bike lock and saying with a straight face "we had to cut through these chains" If those are the locks you encountered, the chains literally meant nothing. You can open those locks with your bare hands, if not a raking tool or a relatively soft blow with a hammer to the body of the lock. Bottom line is this: The chains were never meant to deter police. "Without incident" doesn't mean without violence. That's certainly what the phrase implies, but what it actually means is "no police were harmed". It's like saying "the arial campaign against the Taliban was completed without incident and with no casualties". It's a narrative that completely dehumanises the other side, as if they don't even really exist.

I go to a state/public university, and even though we are in part funded by the state (MA), they allow our college to openly comment on certain political issues. Our president will release official statements by email speaking for the the university on LGBTQ rights (especially trans rights), abortion, responses to mass shootings, pro-Ukraine/anti-Russia, and they’ve issued emails that denounce Hamas/Oct 7 and acknowledge antisemitism, but as a whole they’ve been very supportive of Gaza/Palestine. As a result, things are really chill here. There haven’t been protests at all (but that’s also a testament to the public college aspect, where most of us have less means to protest, and we all have part-time jobs)

I feel we should be careful about the word "coordinated" here. That makes it sound like every reporter and police spokesperson pushing this has been sent a memo and been told to follow the talking points. While it's certainly extremely likely that that's actually exactly what's happening in a disturbingly large minority of cases, I think it's important to be clear that the capital class doesn't actually have to do that actively in most cases. The system we have is built to privilege the interests and views of said class, and it has been staffed by people who for the most part share those perspectives. Those people don't need overt or active coordination, because they are perfectly happy to reproduce whatever narrative they know is preferable to their overlords, and in most cases they share the same view and spontaneously take up the same position. That in no way makes it less dishonest or sinister, they are still lying their asses off, but it's important to remember that we are talking about class interests here. A class doesn't need internal coordination (though that often also does happen), because it's members will broadly act in accordance with class interests, even while being an incoherent mass of individuals otherwise. And I actually think that's worse, because while "following orders" isn't a defense, actively deciding on your own to do a bad thing is definitely worse.

The level of coordination of all power structures to manufacture consensus for state violence against the protests is very transparent.
