What’s happening in this The Mask of Zorro movie clip?
Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson from Lethal Weapon 3), the corrupt governor of the region, learns of De La Vega's (Anthony Hopkins from The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal) alter ego and attempts to arrest him. De la Vega's wife Esperanza (Julieta Rosen), whom Montero was in love with, is killed during the ensuing scuffle. Montero imprisons de La Vega and takes his infant daughter, Elena, as his own before returning to Spain.

What’s the movie The Mask of Zorro about?
After being imprisoned for 20 years, Zorro - Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins from The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal) learns that his old enemy, Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson from Lethal Weapon 3), has returned. Don Diego escapes and returns to his old headquarters where he meets Alejandro Murieta (Antonio Banderas from Desperado).
Alexandro is trained by The Zorro (Anthony Hopkins from The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal) to be his successor. Ajelandro also wants to avenge the murder of his wife and daughter.
Things get complicated when Alejandro gets into a romance with the daughter of Don Rafael Montero, Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones from Ocean’s Twelve).

I love how in less than 4 minutes, they establish a strong and personal relationship/opposition between the heroe and the antagonist. Damn... I miss this time when movies could tell efficiently a beautiful story.

It's worth noting as well that Diego was pretty much owning his ass in the duel, with a random sword off his guard. It makes the audience hate Montero even more that he uses his status and power to suppress Diego when he can't physically outmatch him.

Stewart Wilson was always a good character actor. He also played General Al Kramer in the rock. He was uncredited for some reason, but yeah, I love Stewart Wilson I swear the 90s movies were some of the best

Raphael is one of the most realistic villains. He hated Diego most of all not because Diego is Zorro, he hated him because Esperanza loved Diego over him. Also, after stealing Elena from him, Raphael raised her surprisingly well. What makes Raphael so corrupt is his ideology and lust for power - even though Raphael already has significant amount of power, he still wants more.

He’s a classic old school entitled nobleman. It was also a big blow to his ego and sense of entitlement that California rightfully belongs to him when he was overthrown and forced into exile. It was embarrassing and he lived with the reduced stature and the loss of favor in the Spanish court for twenty years.

Well to be fair it was not Rafael s fault the soldier did not listen when he yelled no . He deserved to get stabbed . If i as a governor would be after someone and my soldier would do this shoot the innocent and unarmed id probably do the same and definetly to jail with him .

I actually loved the figure of Don Rafael. Such an evil character but still kinda elegant and not cringy at all (like villains nowadays). His actor did a fantastic job.

One thing that gets me is that it's not only the unrequited love towards Esperansa that makes Montero's grudge against De la Vega personal but the fact that they are on a first-name basis, implying that they both knew each other on a personal level too.

They're from the rich class from Spain. They may have even known each other from their home country. If you recall earlier Montero gave some Dons land so that it wouldn't fall into Santa Anna's hands. De La Vega wasn't one of those Dons.

@@Lord_Bibulous - I think he was, because Montero said to his friend: "The rest of California I have divided up EQUALLY among the other Dons. I trust you will make sure that ALL of them receive their grounds." So Diego was probably among them, and probably was in line to receive a substantial land grant, in addition to the land he already possessed, before Montero found about his alter identity.

I love it when an antagonist has real conviction and sympathy. It's also cool when they have a similar if not identical skill set to that of the protagonist. It makes a nice mirror reflection of what two different people might do with the same opportunities. Although I don't think Montero was much of an acrobat as Diego, but I do believe that since they're both Dons of wealthy families they were probably raised in similar fashions and taught similar skills, especially in fencing. In Mark of Zorro (1940) it shows Diego in the spanish army learning fencing, horseback riding, and most likely firearms but we don't see it. Rafael probably had similar training, but just didn't pursue it so passionately as Diego.

Fencing was a defense requirement, the nobles solved their problems with sword duels. It is normal for Montero like Diego to know how to handle the sword, I suppose that Diego being the fox and dedicating himself to personally combat threats like the fox because he had to practice the sword more than Montero and when training Alejandro, he would improve his level. I think that when he saw the fox's wound and when he saw Diego's wound he would tie up the ropes, he may have followed the fox and realized that he always went to the direction of Diego's Hacienda and when he saw the wound, then white and in a bottle.

I wouldn't say Montero has real sympathy, or is worthy of much sympathy: he's a "nice guy", and if he is denied what \he thinks\ he is owed, will be petulant and gross - like stealing Elena as his own, for instance. Within the confines of the story this allows for it to be a much tidier telling than it would have otherwise been, but let us not pretend that Montero is anything other than what he is: a person who, in his fragility, could not take no for answer, and acted as a petulant shithead for it.

I think he mostly wanted to punish her for having chosen his rival over him. Hence, the reason he personally came to her house to arrest Zorro right in front of her and pretended to be ''sorry'' for doing this. Just like with Don Diego, I think he also wanted her to live to see her whole life crumble before her eyes. All while still having strong feelings for her. Yup! Don Rafael needed therapy, more than anything.

A brilliant scene done between two great actors: Anthony Hopkins and Stuart Wilson. Wilson is great at playing villains; he was the crooked cop/gun runner Jack Travis in Lethal Weapon 3, unscrupulous gun merchant Walker in TMNT 3 and Walter Marek in No Escape (like The Mask Of Zorro, another Martin Campbell film).

To me the soundtrack evokes a hopeless fight fueled only by the will of De la Vega to protect his family. He's outnumbered and could never win but the music conveys that he won't go down without a fight.

I just saw this movie again after about ten years and wow. It still holds up, great story, great acting. Something did bother me this time, though: I never realized how improbable it is for Diego De La Vega to stay in prison for more than a couple of day, let alone 20 years. It's just not consistent with his character. I would have loved for the writers to expand on that a little more.

100% agree, being the Zorro I don't think he couldn't find a way to escape prison and follow Montero wherever he goes to rescue his daughter, the story would've been better if Diego would've been in a coma or he wandering all over the world until 20 years later he finds out Montero had returned to California. But definitely putting him on prison for 20 years is not what I was expecting.

My guess, he lost everything he ever cared for. Rafael broke him in that scene. He had nothing to fight for. He was replaying the moment Esperanza died to protect him. He was Zorro, and couldn’t protect her. As soon as he saw Montero back, he woke up, dusted himself off and went into action.

Nobody ever seems to take into account that Tornado is downstairs in Zorro's secret lair probably just chilling like horses do as all of the goes on upstairs. He was probably curious & heartbroken as to why his owner never returned after this night.

I recently watched this movie again, and I spotted how Diego got the scratch on his arm that gives him away. It's when he's fighting on top of the gallows and he activates the trapdoor. He scrapes his arm on the way down.

That was the whole point. Diego De La Vega is the ACTUAL canonical Zorro of myth. The premise of the MASK of Zorro is more important than the MAN inside it. So if Diego is the HERO of the myth, he easily would have triumphed had he not taken his eyes off the ball with that one momentary distraction. Heck they even spell out in the film he could have escaped the prison at any time, he just felt zero need to when the man who took his money and murdered his family had left. But once he discovered Montero returned, he was out of there within mere hours!

@@SoraMatt never realized something so obvious as the name of the movie implying how the mask is the point, so to speak. A concept that would be later used for The Dark Knight Rises. Unsurprisingly, Batman following Zorro again. As for the fight, de la Vega would have beaten Montero, but surrounded by armed guards he wouldn't have triumphed. Contrary to other situations where he planned his attack as Zorro, he was ambushed and cornered here. The fox had no way of outwitting his hunters this time.

To him, the need for Zorro was dead as was his desire to live taken from him. With Montero back 20 years later? Zorro escapes INSTANTLY.

The best part of this scene is the payoff later in the film when Captain Love tries to shoot Diego while Elena's in the crossfire, it's Rafael who pushes him away to prevent history from repeating itself.

I don’t know what is worst. The fact he lost his wife, dying to protect him. Him almost believing his daughter was in the fire of their house. Or the fact he just wanted to hold her one more time, and the governor just mocked him saying “She has HER mother’s eyes.~” Yes, we have to pick one which is worst.

@Dragan Ivanisevic I much prefer De La Vega’s Zorro costume to Murrieta’s. You can definitely tell the noticeable differences when viewing the two side by side. Hopkins’ outfit displays Diego’s Spanish heritage, while Alejandro’s showcases his Mexican ancestry.

Once the fight starts the dominance Diego shows is impeccable. He leaps full into Rafael, ragdolls him around and easily beats down his defence, cuts his shoulder and traps his weapon. If it weren’t for his backup he would have obliterated Rafael. Hell 20 years later despite spending most of the time prison he still wins.

Yes, Rafael Montero is a competent sword fighter, but Zorro is on a different level of sword fighting. Zorro is quicker with his sword, has better coordination/offense, and better defense.

And that probably also played into why Rafael killed him in response: he probably wasn't "done" with her yet.

Raphael should have taken Diego seriously when he told him he'd never be rid of him. He's had 20+ years to plan his revenge and 20+ years of pent up rage. Raphael made a huge mistake.

Rafael was happy because he had defeated Zorro, in everything, he had discovered him, taken away his daughter, his possessions, for him he was no longer the invincible swordsman but a man of flesh and blood. I guess he would think that no matter how GOOD he was he couldn't escape. ABSURD THING because later in the film he says IT'S NOT A MAN IT'S THE ZORRO.

They never really explained how Montero figured out Zorro's identity in the first place. Did he always suspect Diego but lacked proof until he saw the arm wound from the rescue? Was he clueless until Zorro talked to him at the end of the rescue?

He knew from long time. But couldn't gather enough prove in order to take in in a trial. They battle each other for over 20 years. De La Vega belongs to the upper class and you would never see it in trial with convictions. And he was secretly jailed sort like the man in the iron mask.

It is not that the villain despises Zorro because Zorro opposes the villain but because Esperanza picked Zorro over the villain. Yes, the villain is power hungry, but he is apparently a good father.

Montero find the true identity of Zorro by the cut on the left arm, and probably also by the voice. He suspected that Don Diego could be Zorro. Then, during the fight, Don Diego wants kill the Governor and escape away with his wife and his daughter. But he couldn't

@@reyartorius1 Well, being in love with Esperanza doesn't mean anything. In fact, it's clear Diego and Rafael don't have a relationship at all because when he sees them he says: "Don Rafael. What an honour. The governor in my home". Zorro and Rafael seem to be long-time enemies. Therefore that can't have been the first time Rafael has heard Zorro talk. And if it was, Diego wouldn't give himself away so stupidly. Zorro getting his voice recognized goes along the same lines as Clark Kent being recognized with his glasses on. If someone says that Rafael suspected for a while for reasons not shown in the movie then I can accept that. But the movie itself doesn't give any reasons. The script simply starts with him already suspecting which isn't far-fetched considering it was an aging Zorro and like you pointed out, Rafael was in love with Esperanza.

While Montero is a villain, he still raised Elena well. She had an upper class upbringing, was allowed to train in sword fights. The only thing he does wrong was lie about her mother and try to tame her wildness and make her behave; which becomes an asset so she can easily give that image but then surprise people of what she's capable of. He could've raped Elena, kept her prisoner, make her his bride, but he was a decent father to her.

Interesting how you’re able to downplay his actions and brush aside the fact that he was basically responsible for her mother’s death. The fact that he did a decent job of bringing her up doesn’t change the fact that he had no right to raise her in the first place. He killed her mother, imprisoned her father. Theres nothing noble or “decent” about any of his actions. It was all done out of pure selfishness.
