The Mask - What's the Difference?

I'm honestly stunned no one has tried to make an r-rated version. It wouldn't even need to be that expensive and you have the perfect way to do sequels on a lower budget not having to pay the same actors more money and just follow the mask's journey from person to person, changing genre depending who is wearing it. The possibilities are literally endless given the premise.

I always felt this was the best that Cameron Diaz ever looked.

For real though, a dark, violent comedy reboot of The Mask starring Nicholas Cage would actually be amazing

Wow! I didnt know the Mask was originally a comic. I love the changes they made to the film. Jim Carrey was perfect to play this version of Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask. It really let him go wild and suited his comedy style. Making Ipkiss a lovable loser made him infinitely relatable. I don't think the audience could root for The Mask if Stanley wasn't a good guy. Great movie from my childhood.

In a post Deadpool world, I think they should re-do the Mask and make it faithful to the violent comic.

This video indirectly taught me that the character Walter from the animated series came from the comics. Uh. Pretty sure there even *was* a scene in the show where Walter tries to put on the Mask but his head is too big so he throws it away.

Honestly, I always thought Dorian was a nod to the comics Mask once he gets to wear it. He has the nasty humor, the gun violence and the booming voice (which is how the audio reading of the comics plays it...)

Of all the remakes that keep coming out a Rated R 'The Mask' is one I want the most.

You know, even though I have fond memories of enjoying the movie so much, I gotta admit...ever since I discovered the comic two years, ago....my love goes to the comic. It just pleases the violence loving nerd in my soul. Now that doesn’t mean I want the comic to replace the movie, or the movie to replace the comic, I just like the comic a little more than the movie.

There's an independent Mask movie on youtube, called Revenge of the Mask, that's true to the comic. Only thing that's missing is Nick Cage...

I made my dad rent The Mask VHS every week until I was like 7 or 8 years old, to this day I know more lines than I thought I would still remember! =D

I love BOTH versions, but I grew up with the movie!! I even have all 3 graphic novels of The Mask!! I was so surprised when I did a little research and saw how gory, bloody and dark that the source material was!! But pleasantly surprised!!

The Mask is in my top 10 movies of all time. It’s so rewatchable and memorable. Plus JIM CARREY.

One of my favorite movies growing up. I never knew then that those goofy teeth were funny prop teeth that Jim Carry was supposed to wear for smiling only. However Jim Carry didn't want to use cgi for the teeth when he had to talk, so he trained himself to talk with the fake teeth in and it made the movie so much better.

As much of a fan of the Jim Carry film I am. A part of me wishes to see a much more faithful adaptation of The Mask. I think would be a great way to bring attention to the character & the Carry version. Not to mention maybe see a re-release of the animated show.

Oh wow! When I was watching this Mask this time I looked out for things that might be reminiscent of the comic book (since I read the description saying it was based on one, but hadn't yet watched the vid). I thought probably Dorian and Milo were straight out of the comics but I was wrong. I'm personally really glad they took the movie into a comedic turn. I think with that choice it's really fun, incredibly zany and a very interesting, unique movie that I've never seen anything else like. :)

In the film, the mask does as they say - brings out the wearer's hidden personality and desires. In the comics, it's kinda like that, but it's more complicated. I personally think it's like the One Ring from The Lord of the Rings: it's got it's own inner personality right at the start, when Stanley hears it talking to him, and it gives the wearer power and a sort of anonymity (invisibility in LotR, literally a mask in The Mask) in order to carry out their secret desires, and so snare them. It's even like the One Ring in that how much evil it does, or how quickly it takes over it's victim, depends on the wearer's intent. Ipkiss was full of murderous rage, so he went on indiscriminate killing sprees right from the get-go. Kellaway was frustrated at his job and sense of justice being blocked by red tape and corruption, so became a vigilante who went after killers, but realised what effect the mask was having on him. Kathy saw all this, knew how much trouble and misery it caused before she wore it in anger, so resisted it the longest. Gonna be frank, I think it's a far deeper and more interesting psychological exploration of the effects of the mask (power, anonymity, addiction, etc. etc.) - perhaps moreso in this current age of internet communication - than the 'wimpy guy gets self-respect' and 'goofy hijinks' things from the film, and I think it's misleading to think of the comic as just a bloody murder spree. (That's just a happy bonus...) I'll even say the film ruined the comic series: 'The Mask Strikes Back' was the first one published after the film and it's noticeably toned down. Four angry teens become Big Head and the most violent thing any of them does is frazzle Walter a bit. You could even pinpoint the place where you realise the mask has become Jim-Carreyfied: before, the sense of horror was created by an indestructible, uninhibited cartoon character carrying out cartoon violence and it's realistic effects on realistic characters, particularly police officers. In TMSB, Big Head explodes a bomb in police HQ and it just leaves the officers with a very cartoony film of black soot all over. Big Head wasn't allowed to kill anymore, probably thanks to kids finding the comic after the film, and it neutered the whole theme. The comics carried on after TMSB and gradually became indistiguishable from the film version, down to the wacky nonviolence, the nordic mask design, and the yellow zoot suit. It even derailed the sub-plot of the mask's origin, that was first hinted at in that tribal ritual scene. We never got to find out anything more about that. Also, bear in mind that I saw the film first, as a kid, and liked it; and didn't begin reading the comic series 'til long years after. I'm kind of prone to that old attitude of reading the book first and blaming the adaptation for ruining it. But even when I see the adaptation first, like this case, I can still usually say "the book was better".

So in the comics, the Mask turns you into a cross between Deadpool and Freddy Krueger, only the jacked up face is temporary? That's pretty cool.

I would respectfully disagree with those who would want an R-rated reboot of the Mask. Partly because I feel it should remain general audience-friendly as it is, but also be an antithesis to Deadpool. That said, anything to wash the bad taste of Son of the Mask out would suffice.

The Mask also had a cartoon series following the movie, but also combines some characters from the comic like Walter. The cartoon version was pretty alright and it does seem like the more family friendly version of the series since it was aired in I believe cartoon network or a similar kids channel. Plus they had more people using the mask, added more villains, nods to the movie, adding more interactions with characters and had about 2 seasons.

If there's ever gonna be a horror reboot of the mask movie, i think jim carry would still work considering that the wackiness is in both the comic and the movie, just on different sides of the coin if you know what i mean.

You forgot to mention that the mask in the comics is made out of jade and there was no Mask of Loki in the The Mask comic books. Plus, in the two Mask movies, the Mask of Loki is made out of wood. And speaking of The Mask movies, they need some comic book-accurate reboots.
