Stephen Silver stubbled into gemology quite by accident. In order to avoid having to go on a family vacation he signed up to take a diamond grading course at the GIA. He was fascinated with it and enrolled in a course on grading colored stones. After graduating with a degree in gemology he found himself mundanely sorting about 1000 diamonds a day that would be sent off to a factory for retail jewelry.
After sorting for two years, Stephen opened up a jewelry appraisal business. Back then most gem appraisers operated on factory model where clients would have to drop off their valuables and pick them up in 2 weeks. Stephen worked out a system where he could spend time with his clients appraising they jewels in front of them and provide them with a report by the end of the appointment. His business boomed and eventually led into other sectors of the jewelry industry such as recutting, refurbishing, and restoration.
Today he helps his clients integrate gem portfolios into their estate plans as well as providing inventory to jewelry stores specializing in high end products, around the world.
