One of the many philosophical points presented in 1999 film, The Matrix. In particular, this scene contributes this line to be discussed - Ignorance is Bliss.
Isn’t that why Morpheus mentions in the film that “[they] never free people from the Matrix once they reach a certain age”? This is likely because the older a person is, and the longer they stay connected to the Matrix, the more traumatic it is for the mind to cope with reality. They made an exception for Neo because Morpheus had been searching specifically for The One, their saviour against the machines.
@@Apollo_Mint I thought Morpheus told Neo people can't go back into the matrix once they have reached a certain point in the real world because the mind wouldn't accept the matrix again?
@@mapleleaf3803 really? So how do they plug back into the matrix all the time? The only people who don’t are those who were born in Zion and don’t have any sockets on their body to plug in.
Ignorance is most definitely bliss. Having the constant thought of something bad in the back of my head will just fuck with me for so long. But If I don’t know it then I got nothing to worry about.
Ignorance is not about thinking about something bad or good. Its about your own state of whats happening around. At you core, you care or it doesn't matter(Its only You) How u define yourself not in a certain situation, but overall.
One of the biggest loopholes in religion, they make it seem like you'll live in happiness, but how can you be happy after knowing everything you know now? The respective gods will just be another form of totalitarian government, you'd know for certain if you live out of line you'd be forfeiting your existence. . True happiness could be achieved with pure ignorance of everything else in reality.
This is ironic. Because it's like that for us when we hooked up to the world. isolate yourself from the world and news and your life will become better. It took me 3 days with horses in a shithole with no internet to realize this.
You'll find piece but it takes a while, like 20 years or so, for your brain to adapt to the sad truths about the system. Then you're through, able to enjoy again what life still has for you and nothing can de-balance you. High price though. Sometimes I envy the ignorant, for having had those happy 20 years...
This is my favourite dialogue scene in the film. Because it’s at this point where the perception of The Matrix is no longer 1-sided. People like Neo may see The Matrix as nothing but a fake, nihilistic digital dreamworld that the human race has no right to be kept in while their bodies are used as batteries for the machines. But to people like Cipher, that doesn’t matter. So what if reality is just a digital dreamworld? The real world is far worse. People like Cipher just want to live a peaceful, successful life, regardless of if the reality they’re in is real or digital. It doesn’t matter as long as it feels real to them. If this film were written and directed by someone other than The Wachowskis, it probably wouldn’t have this dual-sided perspective that shows the audience that maybe The Matrix isn’t all bad, and some probably wouldn’t want to be freed from it, or even be willingly inserted into it to escape the dystopian nightmare of the real world. Absolutely genius writing.
It's totally true imo. I realized this from a young age and started using drugs and alcohol with wreckless abandon thinking "what have I got to lose but brain cells to get me closer to my friends?" I don't think quite this destructively anymore since I'm getting old but ignorance is absolutely bliss! If you focus on the bad and the reality of all that could go wrong you will have a bad time really fast! :D Be well. Much love.
Despite what u think about this character.....i can understand the frustrations that pushed him to betray his friends to the Matrix. Yes, his friends were fighting for a good cause but sometimes doing the right thing comes with it negative consequences that you didn't ask for so who can blame him for wanting out.
Today's escape into a virtual reality is a good foretaste of Matrix.. people hate dealing with their problems they'll easily give up real life for a fake one
Cypher: ... and I wanna be rich. You know: someone important. Like an actor. Smith: Whatever you want, Mr. Reagan. We can all agree that the structure/order of this dialogue is not a coincidence, right?
Like as in Ronald Reagan. He gets sent back as Ronald Reagan which would satisfy his wish as being some important and an actor, but also a person who is past his prime. He gets sent back as a retired actor/ex-president. That’s the kind of conniving deal Satan would make.
@@CliffordRutley You know, maybe its better to stay "ignorant" because what if the "reality" is not as good as you thought? for example, the book of "beyond the aquila rift" i would surely will not like to awake.
Even if we take the red-pill, we won't be able to change anything. Sure, we recruited many people into this resistance but that won't change anything right? We only have an overpopulated ship now, out there? There is probably gajillions amount of robots. So I want a guy without an anime profile picture to tell me, how we will fight back. We'll only live suffering, that will be all. Knowing this? I'd take the blue-pill, if we KNEW we could do something, increasing the chances of successfuly helping the humanity; THEN i'd take the red-pill. But it's too late for that choice, so I'd rather live in ignorance and not have existential crisis every second.
Language doesn't work that way. There are many languages that use double negatives to reinforce a statement. English is not really one of them, but using double negatives has absolutely nothing to do with mathematics. Good try though.
How the hell does "I don't want to remember nothing" quietly translate into he wants to remember something? The intent is very clear in the fact that he repeated himself via enunciating the last word. As if to make it clear on the exact amount he wants to remember. More over, it's solidified that he doesn't want to remember anything via his hesitation when Smith mentions morphy One would even say a flicker of guilt passed in his eyes.
Guys, my comment is a joke. Obviously, he wants to forget everything. And yes, JH, he's using a negative as a locative in emphasizing his point. I get it.
Thats a production technique, the first steak he cut is colored pink by non edible coloring to make it look beautiful, the one he eats is less pink and fit for consumption.
@@SwiftractPtss No, it was two seperate takes from the film. He may have had many tries to get that part right. No way in helll is he going to be able to use the same piece if he eats it then does another take.
And where will he permanently be plugged in? Certainly can't stay in the ship, as it could be found by other ships. Does the matrix have a pod set up for him? I do tend to think the Matrix would honor an agreement, as long as it doesn't compromise their agenda. Without a specific, pragmatic motive to renege, I don't see any reason for a passionless ai to not follow through on an agreement. I think it would view it as simply another set of instructions.
If he wants to lead a rich actor's life - why delete the memory? He will not enjoy it but another Cypher will. So why does he not just get himself killed in order to be nullified? Oh, I forgot. He did got himself killed and nullified.
Ignorance is a punishment for sin, it's not a virtue. The Curè of Ares said the "Greatest evils conflicting Catholics is the ignorance of their religion"
Why wouldn't he? IMO there's absolutely no reason why he wouldn't do it. It could be technically complicated to take him physically back to the pods but wanting to be put back to the Matrix was evidence to Agent Smith that the system actually works and a validation they should keep pursuing Neo, Morpheus, others
If you want to exit the Matrix you should believe in yourself as the one who can do it, gather a gang of rebels, delve into the underground, organize collective resistance, start a revolution and destroy the Matrix violently.
Look up on RU-vid The Protocols Of The Learned Elders Of Zion Full Audiobook that is 3 hours 38 minutes duration. Study the contents of this prophetic and telling book and you will come to see history and the present through a new lens. You will also learn a thing or 2 in the process. I think the Protocols are the best red pill you can get. You will also see the matrix, like you have never seen it before. Some say that the Protocols are symbolic of the sunglasses, in the The Live movie. Here is a link, but it probably won't be up for much longer. Most of them have previously been deleted. Don't bother googling about the Protocols, because all you will get is propaganda designed to keep you ignorant to the contents of the Protocols. If one was caught with a copy of the Protocols in Russia after the Jewish backed, led, funded and controlled Bolshevik revolution, they were shot on the spot. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FjAIDJOiwWc.html All I am offering is the truth, you have to walk through the door
After 15 years as an atheist, listening to dumb conversations, sometimes wishing to be part of that collective lie, I can relate to this scene from time to time.
@@ElBayadKhalil The Matrix is a simulation within a simulation within a simulation. So who's god in that scenario? If I knew I lived like that, it's hard to accept a god, unless you wipe out your memory, like Cypher is about to. On the other hand, if you mean, why can't I just pretend. I could I guess, like pretending Santa exist, but what is the point?
"If truth is what you seek, then the examined life will only take you on a long ride to the limits of solitude and leave you by the side of the road with your truth and nothing else." Thomas Ligotti, The Conspiracy Against the Human Race.
I agree completely and live this scene, but how did Cypher go into the Matrix without an operator? Is there some form of automation I'm unaware of? Just was always curious.
I get confused watching this. When Mr Smith says he wants Zion codes, Cypher says he cant....in a way like he's said it before. So the meeting was on the basis that Cypher had already agreed to something, but not Zion codes....something else. and it wasnt to capture Morpheus because Mr Smith seemed surprised at the idea. So I wonder what Cypher promised Mr Smith for there to be a meeting at all.
The actor of Cyper does a great job in this scene. Every time I watch it I want a steak. I wonder why he was never in other big movies, he was clearly a talented actor.
So he knows it isn't real but he can still experience it as if it is so it's not really much of an issue in this regard, but yeah he wants to be permanently back in that perceived reality again without switching between the two.
Ignorance only seems like bliss. Without wisdom, life is very painful and pointless. Cypher is going to be made a washed up actor with alzheimers for the lulz by the machines - if not outright just thrown into the garbage after he is of no use. Don't reject adulthood. Accept it and use it to create a reality bubble around yourself that's better than the rest of the world. Repressing your inner child isn't good enough. You have to integrate it into yourself. Its that or hello pain world.
This is a powerful understanding that can relate to the world we live in and goes all the way back to the story of Adam and Eve and even buddhism. Ignorance is avtually what leads to all suffering eventually. Cypher is more concerned with his pure animalistic instincts being satisfied and doesn't have the courage to face the truth of reality. Adam and Eve represent the pure instinctive nature of man and woman without awareness and knowledge of higher truths. Just like a dog or animal lives in ignorance of many truths. He was clouded by ignorance despite having the opportunity to see things truly and clearly as they are. It shows that he didn't have the courage to be able to face truth and succumbed to his primitive ignorant nature.
He plugged himself. There's another scene where he's doing shady stuff in the main computer when Neo shows up. Most likely he plugged himself after everybody went to bed (must be like plugging an USB cable by that point.
True. I just don't like the fact that he killed multiple people to get what he wanted. So he wanted to go back fine, but don't drag everyone else into his turmoil.
I like bad guys with realistic motives. Green or just differing factional goals. I hate the simplistic "I'm a bad guy and I like doing bad things to good people " bad guys. It's like watching foxnews
