Originally an agent of the Matrix, intended to hunt "red pills" in the system, Hugo Weaving's iteration of Agent Smith sees several changes in the original Matrix trilogy. After being temporarily removed by Neo at the end of The Matrix, Smith becomes an exiled program with the ability to assimilate others, causing an inevitable clash with Neo, who eventually decides to make peace between man and machine at the end of The Matrix Revolutions.Roughly 60 years later in The Matrix canon, a version of Smith's agent Jonathan Groff exists outside the Matrix until Neo's awakening causes them to clash once more when Neo and his allies attempt to extract Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) in Resurrections of the Matrix.
