"The Maud Couple" Reaction/Review with Lightning and Sweetie at BABSCon 2018 

One thing my friend pointed out about this episode. The "Pinkie doesn't know Maud as well as she thinks she does and Maud likes the effort Pinkie puts in more than anything" could be seen as being foreshadowed all the way back in season 4. At the end of Maud Pie, this exchange happens after Pinkie gives her the candy necklace. Pinkie Pie: Try not to eat all the candy before you leave! Twilight Sparkle: Are those all the necklaces Pinkie Pie sent you? Maud Pie: Mm-hm. Twilight Sparkle: You haven't eaten any of them? Maud Pie: I don't really like candy. But I do love Pinkie Pie.

I think the reason Pinkie dislikes Mud Briar as opposed to Maud is that she grew up with the latter. She's grown used to Maud's strangeness and mannerisms to the point where she doesn't notice anymore. On the other hand Briar is the only other pony we've seen with similar behavior, so Pinkie's never had to deal with anyone else like that.

Between this episode, 'Rock Solid Friendship,' and 'Secrets and Pies,' Pinkie has had multiple occasions when she's found out she didn't know as much as she thought she did.

I think the ship should be "sticks and stones"

Blissy likes Fruits Basket. See, this is why we're friends. :) I liked this episode. (of course I would, it's Pinkie Pie) but a part of me feels like the characters who learn the lessons go OTT and that becomes distracting from the lesson at hand a little, especially when Pinkie is the one learning the lesson. She has no medium level. So it was actually nice to see that she made such an effort to get to know Mud Briar, BUT also see Mud Briar making an affort as well. :) I can kind of relate to this with my siblings both being married and having to get to know their spouses over the years. :) It takes a lot of effort but it is so worth it. :)

This did make me realize the big difference between Maud and Mud, for Pinkie. Maud stays quiet about things for Pinkies sake, or even enjoys them out of her liking Pinkie's happiness. Mud Briar not only does not do that but will never hesitate to state exactly what is on his mind/ will point out if something is not exactly correct.

*They've adjusted the opening as they went every couple seasons.* But this is the biggest shift as a whole all at one go to be sure, and it is nice to see the culmination of all things thus far reflected.

Mudbriar is a Sheldon Cooper character, he even sounds similar...

i don't know why but i liked when pinkie said Maud was in love then Maud specified they were in like don't know why but i liked the distinction.

Now that I hear the moral described the way Doc Wolf described it, it seems like a rehashing of the moral from the episode "Keep Calm and Flutter On" where Fluttershy reforms Discord. Also, the way Maud went along with Pinkie's surprise parties to avoid hurting Pinkie's feelings reminds me of how Dash didn't want to tell Pinkie that she doesn't like pies. Both went along with things they didn't like and kept up a facade because they didn't want to hurt Pinkie's feelings.

Anyway yeah I was laughing throughout the episode because Mudbriar reminded me of myself. I have the tendency to correct people, however I have gotten better over the years. Man though was I bad when I was younger lol. Now I do recall when my younger brother met his current wife, it was a huge shock to the whole family because she was the first (and only) person he dated because before that he was never interested in women in that way. For one, he was in the Air Force at the time (she was too) and it was literally an out of the blue situation because we called him one day and asked him what he was doing. Well technically (yes I am doing this lol), I called him first and told him what we were doing and asked him what he was doing. His next words stunned me, but in a good way, "I am with my girlfriend." I literally shouted, "YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND!?" My mom then demanded the phone lol. It was a shock for me especially because I always remembered my brother when he was 12 saying he'd never get married because he wanted to be like our uncle (who was single at the time, but then he gets married at some point lol). So I was in a state of shock for a long time, even after they got married. It was until I became an aunt that the shock finally died down lol. They just had their 10th wedding anniversary this year with 3 kids.

Okay I just have to say this: Sweetie Bloom's laugh is downright infectious. I love it. This episode was a good one though hard for me to swallow at first but once I saw Mud's mind palace thing I got the idea that they were going for. Keep up the good work everyone. Oh and Sweetie Belle are you enjoying your lovable plushie? We need to see some more of those plushie shenanigans with the new addition

Actually the “mind palace” is a real memory technique that dates back to Ancient Greece. I don’t think that’s its real name though.

The bit where pinkies searching for maud gives me gave me ministry of morale vibes, just a reminder how scary pinkie can be when she wants to be. Also the fact that mudbriars cutie mark is a stick in the mud, (which he is) and twilights "I never learned to read!" Cracked me up

Was a very fun episode to watch. I really loved seeing a the dynamic of the three ponies' relationships and that kind of angle. I thought it was nice. Also best thing ever that you guys love Fruits Basket

I'd honestly like to see follow up therapy visits for the characters. Maud's follow up could include Mud Briar. That sounds fun. :)

Lightning Bliss and Doctor Wolf and Sweetie are all Fruits Baskets fans also Sweetie is my older brother’s age. Also I cant relate either. My brothers and I are weird. We all acknowledge we had varied interests and randomly talk about various things. We all like a lot of different things. My brothers are way into games and I’m not good at them so I let them geek out. And I’m geeking out about drawings pharmacy or anime and they let me do it. If anything we are more surprised over what our food preferences are since they always change

I found this episode interesting funny Maud as always with her comedy and this guy Pinkie Pie was a bit overprotective of her sister. Holy heck new intro Limestone Pie is really envious of Maud having a boyfriend and Marble Pie was in this episode this episode I had to watch more than once

Dr. Wolf, you're born in the late spring of 82 right? You'd be the Dog. I know because I am the Rooster and the dog comes after my sign. So if that is true, it be very fitting lol. OMG I love Fruits Basket too, but they seriously need to reboot that anime and do the whole manga because they only got through the first 4 volumes in the manga as far as the anime goes. They didn't have my sign in the anime *sniffles* Along with the Horse.

This episode gave me so many flashbacks to my relationship issues with my family. They hate him and don't see why I was with him. We have been together for 5 years now.

There's something added to this episode that I'm pretty certain Most would miss His cutie Mark is a stick in the mud. Not only is that symbolic buuuut, it goes even deeper then you realize Stick in the mud? Stick in the Maud. And to add something that may or may not been intended.... Not only is that a pun, but it also could've been a perverted joke.

I liked this episode and Mudbriar too but I don't know who I feel most irritated by: Mudbriar not trying to be less condescending for Pinkie's sake. Or Maud not talking to Pinkie about her issues. Even Starlight talked to Pinkie about it more than she did.

I know this is only the third episode of the season but this is my favorite so far just because ive never had so much fun watching an episode of mlp before, i laughed even more than when i watched fame and misfortune.

My entire reaction to this episode was "god dammit pinkie" with the occasional Awww thrown in. I found Mud Briar annoying in his introduction but i loved maud right off the bat, which is weird as they are both blunt, straight forward characters who take things literally.

I used to think that the other eps were showing how Pinkie Pie can relate her her sister even when nobody else could but now I think maybe it was just to show that she is protective of her sister, regardless of understanding her. Because in this episode, she showed she does not understand Maud

Could you imagine what the episode of "The Mentally Advanced Series" would have been of this episode if they were still making them? My mind is hearing pinkie's voice now. "Pinkie's sister is having the sess with Mudbriar!!! Yes. This.. cannot be allowed!"

This episode hit really close to home for me - My sister's husband is one that can still be a little frustrating to me at times. I have learned to appreciate him, but I don't really see what my sister sees in him. I didn't even think about how well that paralleled the episode until Pinkie's sisters were talking to her and then I thought, "Oh gosh, I need to pay attention!" So yeah, I will have to rate this high on the personal episodes for me. Side note: I loved Mud Briar from the start. I honestly don't know why XD

He reminds me of Sheldon off The Big Bang Theory

Mud Brier is _technically_ Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. When it comes to Maud leading Pinkie on, her 1st appearance had her let Pinkie believed she loved rock candy. So this isn't new information.

I like this review. They noticed that the secondary characters are getting canon ships. Its only a matter of time before they finally ship Starlight with Sunburst.

I could have sworn that Jim Parsons (the guy who played Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory) was Mud Briar.

I give the "Maud Couple" a 10 out of 10.

My stance do...with this kind of disconnect... is that as long as he makes her happy, but if you hurt her, the deepest corners of hell won't be a good enough hiding place

@Sweetie - Not sure if it's been said in the comments already, but Twilight is a unicorn in the first few seconds because that snippet of the intro is supposed to represent her first arriving in Ponyville-- when she "used to wonder what friendship could be". It's not an animation error that needs fixed, it's a deliberate artistic choice for storytelling purposes. (Me @ Myself: Oh no is this gonna come off as mean and know-it-all-y? Me answering myself: ... You should add "TECHNICALLY" to the beginning. xD I won't now but.)

I liked the episode! Partly in due to more of maud's geologic knowledge (I even know the process of Permineralization :3 ) but that's one little detail that concerns. How quick Pinkie accepted that she was willing to break Mud like a rock (murder much? )

I had to look up the voice actor of Mud Briar just to check it wasn't Jim Parsons.

Speaking of the new opening. Something that jumped out at me is the geography shown in the opening means the new ending photograph should be impossible. It's a shot of the front of the school with the new students and teachers on a platform in between the photographer and the school. But if you look at the opening, the path across the water to the front doors of the school ends immediately at the base of Twilight's castle. We see Twilight and Starlight have to make a hard right from the base of the castle to access the path. This means from the perspective of the photo, the students and staff should be embedded in the wall at the base of the castle, and the photographer would probably be directly below the center of the castle.

So I saw the episode and it hit close to home. Sadly, the problem is that the man my sister married is ugly on both the inside and out. Also, lightning, nice think plushie

I identify with Pinkie in that I have a brother-in-law who I don't always get along with but my sister is completely enamored with almost ten years later. He's a great guy, don't get me wrong, it's more that I'm an Aspie and he doesn't really understand how to interact with me. At all.
