"It would actually be a good plane to get checked out in tailwheel..." I flew a 235-horse M5 with the VG's on tour operations here in Hawaii. I've flown Stearmans, Waco YMF5's, Citabrias, Super Cubs, Cessna Ag Trucks, a DC-3, and a Great Lakes biplane with nary a landing issue. NONE of these were more challenging to land gracefully than that little Maule. I think this was because the Maule, with the small tires (ours originally had balloon tires which were removed and replaced with conventional tires like the ones in your video before I flew it) sat on the pavement in a relatively flat attitude which wouldn't permit a full, or near full stall, three-point landing-it was still trying to fly in its earthbound attitude, and the slightest bounce would require an immediate and finely tuned response with elevator/throttle to tame an embarrassing PIO porpoise down the runway. Additionally, our (three-blade equipped) M5 had very limited propeller clearance, so raising the tail to dump lift and control rebound risked a pavement prop strike (don't ask). This Maule was wrecked in a landing accident by a pilot with limited tailwheel experience after I left the company. The M5 was just fine in the air, but I'd certainly have reservations about soloing a student in one.

I Love my Maule, you are absolutely correct on excess speed. I have never learned to make a good wheel landing on the Maule , to doit right, you have to have the correct attitude and run out airspeed and altitude at the same time. Enjoyed the video. I've heard that Mr. Maule will give lessons was planning on going over there, but got to Lehrer I was satisfied with most of my stall landings.
@gawoodbridge

@@jackiewindham8199 , if I remember correctly, the Maule handbook states that wheel landings are NOT recommended. I did them for my tail wheel endorsement, but not after that.

Mark. Love your videos. Keep them up. Just a few notes for accuracy. It's an M5-210C not M5 201 C or MX. The landing gear is not bungie, its oleo struts. The fuselage is not rag from the firewall back, the boot cowl is metal. There is no cuff on the wing, straight uncambered USA 35B airfoil, with VG's. And yes, you can land about 40 mph slower than you did. Love it! Keep em' coming!!

Stiff gear. Probably why CHP went to the C180/5 series. I saw one of their Maules after a landing 'mishap' on a Central Valley levee road--wiped the gear out. BTW--remember the Maule scene in the movie 'Cannonball Run'?(Burt Reynolds lands downtown to get more beer at the quickie mart)

I was visiting a friend at Maule a little over 30 years ago, and was invited to put my C170B in the hangar for the length of my stay. BD Maule walked up, looked over my 170 and said " Why didn't you buy a Maule?!?" I made some weak excuse, then walked outside. My buddy Lawrence and I were shooting the breeze outside of the hangar door when I heard an engine start inside. My friend advised me to step away from the door opening, which I did. Shortly afterwards, the engine inside went to full power and old man Maule had it in the air before he exited the door. It didn't seem as dramatic as the famous photograph of him doing for an ad, but it was still mighty damn impressive. Maule is pronounced like 'haul'.

I actually bought this airplane and it was my first. I'm a 35+ year airline captain so my GA was a little rusty, just like the engine on this aircraft. I know I know, I should've done my due diligence and I thought I had when I trusted his mechanic to give me a fair assessment of the plane. Well, it wasn't and I was the fool for trusting anyone. The engine had to be rebuilt and after looking at the borescope pics I was absolutely amazed he flew it for over four hours getting it to me, which I appreciated. But I was told by my A&P that it could have easily been a catastrophic failure. Not to mention the ELT which was dead as a door nail and had to be replaced. I know, due diligence....But here's the thing. It's nice when you can trust someone and take them at their word. It was my fault and I made a mistake which I'll never repeat. Bottom line is if you are going to buy a plane from this individual make sure you do a thorough inspection first. My impression was that both he and his mechanic would've said anything for a sale. I learned a valuable lesson and it cost me a lot but I was also sadly reminded that people with true integrity are hard to find. I don't dislike Mark at all and he's a helluva salesman and maybe one day I'll ask him to sell it for me. (No plans to ever sell it), but be warned....Thanks.

Tom, I've known Mark for 13 years and I've never heard him lie about anything, and I assure you that he doesn't need you to buy a plane from him. Every plane has multiple offers, no matter what condition they are in. The inspection likely checked the cylinders for compression and found them to be good. You can look in your logs to see if they were within specs. Have you called Mark to discuss this? Have you asked the mechanic any questions? By the way, Mark doesn't have a mechanic working for him. He does recommend several to avoid any conflict of interest. It's so unbecoming and disingenuous to handle this the way you have. You say you accept responsibility, but it sounds more like you are looking for someone else to blame for your decision. - Don the Camera Guy

Hi Tom, To put this into perspective. The Maule had a pretty much zero time engine. (180 HP Lycoming) I think it had 10 hours on it but it had been about 5 years and it had lived in Utah. It was annualled and flown here to Placerville (Northern California) Then it was here and I flew it a bit. We did a video on it of course. I flew it then as well. You bought it on condition that I deliver it to you so I did. I did not use sales pitch and the mechanic was not collaborating with me to make the sale. I did not even own the plane. I had no money tied up in it. It was a very nice plane. I'd never have flown it over the Sierras and the Rockies and the Great Salt lake if I'd know that it had some internal corrosion in the engine. Also, if an engine is like that all it needs is disassembly and inspection and replace as necessary. It does not need to be overhauled. The price difference between these two options is tens of thousands of dollars. Overhauling takes it back to zero time. It was already there. It just needed an IRAN (Inspect and Repair as Necessary) I advised you of this when you told me that the engine had corrosion. I gave you all kinds of time and money saving advice back then. I wish you had done it. A pre-purchase inspection and an annual neither require an engine boroscope. With 10 hours on it and a dry Utah history there was no need to do one because the compressions were excellent and it was not burning oil and there was no metal in the filter at annual. Also you cannot see the cam in a Lycoming without pulling off a cylinder and that was not necessary on an engine with 10 hours on it. This situation was bad luck and no-one could have known this. I'll sell it for you when you are ready at zero comission.

Hi Mark, 1st time watching your channel. I had a 1974 M-5 210c with the IO 360D 210 hp also. There was no place I landed that I could not get out of, an amazing airplane with tremendious leg & head room. Here in Michigan we have a lot of grass and unimproved places to land and this plane would do it all. I also had a 1976 180K 0470-u that was a great cross country and short field plane. Currently our mission organization has a 1948 108-3 Stinson with a 165hp Franklin. Its a smooth flying plane and I like the oleo gear on rough fields but its a little small for hauling loads. The Maule didn't seem to mind how much you put iniside it would always jump right off. Terry 3-21-22

Maule rhymes with "haul". I have a few hours in the M5-210C (not 201C - I believe it's for 210 horsepower Continental) - got my tailwheel endorsement in it - my good friend's airplane. The interconnected rudder is a weird thing. The gigantic fin also makes the airplane want to weathervane pretty strongly in a crosswind - although the rudder authority is plenty - you just have to really use it sometimes. It's a draggy airplane - reduce power and it's coming down! Very noisy with that prop and the high RPM required to make 210 horsepower from 360 cu-in - you could hear the noise breaking through the squelch on the intercom in this video - it's noisy!! The Maule is a plane designed more for economical production with basic materials and for operation (and repair) in the field than as an ultimate flying machine. For reference, some C206s do have right-front doors - the P-model (P206). They have door configurations like the early C210s and the C205s. Doors on both sides of the front and a single large baggage door on the left. But the more common C206s are configured as you said with the pilot's door on the left front and double barn doors on the right rear.

I'm 6'5'' and looking for an airplane large enough to get my PPL in "comfortably". Would this work? I would prefer to do my training in a taildragger. I don't really like the Cherokee or 172, they're barely big enough for me but this looks roomier.

You would have trouble fitting comfortably in it.

Yeah the struts are right in the way to swing in your legs.

I'm 6'3" and flew a 235-horse M5 with glass doors on air tours with the seat set all the way aft. You might be a bit uncomfortable. The back seats are super tight too, no way an adult could sit behind me with the seat set where I wanted it.

I can see why you did not show that landing from outside the plane Bounce Bounce. You could see it on your face ..

Great performing plane but I just can’t stomach how ugly Maules are. Couldn’t own it.

What the hell!?! Ugly!?🤔 man.. the cool look of them Is what sold me! First one I ever saw was yellow with black stripes. The long sleek cowling looks so dang good! I was like, "I have to have one of those!" Had one bought in the next year! I think the fat blunt cowling looks hideous on cesnas.. But I like unique things. I absolutely hate buying whats extremely common like cesnas or a john deere🙄 for crying out loud..

Really bad info! Did you prep? You don’t even know how to pronounce the brand. You lost credibility when you said it had a yaw damper!
@skywagonuniversity5023
@skywagonuniversity5023 2 года назад
"like a yaw damper" aileron assist rudder synchronization. The "not knowing the pronunciation" was a joke because I have an accent. You should have more to do than comment like this don't you.
@lovetofly32

Well it does have a yaw damper.. Ive been around Maules and studied them and flown them and been around guys who own them and he did a great job. You probably cant even comprehend what a short stroke piston is. Because it makes more sense to say short stroke crank to me... 🤔 🤣
