Ryen Russillo recaps the Mavericks’ win over the Timberwolves in the first game of the Western Conference finals. He runs through how the Jaden McDaniels vs. Kyrie Irving matchup was a problem for Minnesota, and what the problem is with Anthony Edwards’s offensive approach right now-and whether it can be attributed to health or Dallas’s defense.

Wolves is just a bad matchup for the Nuggets. The Mavs on the other hand is just average against the Nuggets. Another thing about Kyrie I noticed is he intentionally baits & fakes Gobert on multiple plays, almost as if he’s trained specifically to counter Gobert’s skillset. There was an alley-oop he tossed up but tricked Gobert by holding onto it a split second longer than a usual lob plus tossing it super high up to give the impression he was going for a high arching layup…My mind was blown watching the replay and seeing Gobert’s face getting tricked step-by-step.

The Mavs are just a different challenge than whatever the Wolves have faced so far. They were able to cruise vs the Suns because the Suns didn't force em to expend any energy on the offensive end. They were able to just gang up on Jokic and not worry about overexerting themselves defensively because they had so many bodies to throw at him. The Mavs have big guys too, and they have PJ, Luka, and Kyrie who can all create their own shot... so it's forcing the Wolves to either pace themselves or be gassed. That said, the Wolves aren't going anywhere and it'll be a dogfight all the way through. It is the WCF after all.

Assuming they still want to apply pressure beyond the 3 ( doesn’t seem to be working for them, but…), then you need to step back 2-3 steps and pick him until on the other side of halfcourt. This isn’t a gimpy Jamal Murry you can hamper 72-90ft out. Dial it back to 3/4 court on your side or maybe a high low half court trap. Kyrie is going to take your lunch money for 4 games if this is the game plan. 3:43 Also so it’s known I would prefer he takes their lunch money #GoMavs. Oh ya last thing…is Luka gimpy this series. So you’re taking shots at Kyrie saying he’s doing this “sage thing”. Basically saying he’s not being authentic. I don’t know you in the least, just another anonymous poder to me. But hasn’t Kyrie proven he’s not the same person that he used to be. Maybe it’s not a sage thing, maybe it’s just who he is as a matured adult man and father. Kyrie seems like he’s in a really good place. Mentally and physically. He’s all positivity and good vibes and I believe that everything he says is truly authentic to the man he’s become. He’s going about things in the right way, on and off the court. Kyrie is the unquestioned leader and glue that is holding this team together. He’s a man that’s made a lot of mistakes, there is no argument there. But this version of Kyrie is the best player and person he’s ever been. It’s time to give the old narratives a rest and see the man for who he is today. He’s come a long way.

Guy comes up to you in LA after finding out that you're so&so you were right to give some advice cuz why else would a guy that no clue who you were just come up &talk to you. But maybe he wanted your snap but you were right to act like the wise-old-owl. As a Luka supporter which made me a Mavs guy I thought whomever plays better Kyrie or Towns that guys team will win the west. I had Edwards as NBA MVP this year he's the truth but McDaniels has been the T-wolves best player the last 4-games & Towns was their best player in game-6 and game-7 vs Denver. Edwards is similar to Durant in that the more 3's they take the worse they're shooting but if he plays well or even average Minnesota would likely be up 2-0

2:52 it seemed like; to me anyway that if 11 isn’t going to trap baseline here he owes it to ( whom are we talking about here, Jaden McDaniels?) Kryie’s defender to come up earlier at or before half court to at least get out of the way so that (we’re going to call Kyrie’s defender Jaden for now. I can edit later) he’s at least not being used as a brush screen as Kyrie does here.

This is one of my favorite things to see in a fast break or a defensive breakdown situation where you use the defense’s inability to communicate (double, switch, or simply “move tf outta my mf’in’ way”) as a weapon against him. Now that help is actually used like a caltrop to the primary defender, where now he’s gotta play catch up. In short this is a communication breakdown for me. Which highlights even at the most elite levels there’s may 2-3 guys who do this effectively today. It’s a laughable issue in truth. 2:56

Shows desperation and young men unable to stick to a game plan. They’ll learn and recover. I certainly wouldn’t count them out before game 4. 5:55

Things might look different. But the result will be the same tonight. Dallas wins by 8

Mavs missed a crap ton of open 3's. And took half they usually do. I don't know...I felt that the Mavs played pretty terribly and won on the road.
