I was a carpenter/joiner by trade ... One day . over thirty years ago . I found myself clambering about putting a roof on a house ... It was a cold day and it was raining intermittently . not enough to say we were "rained off" . but enough for me and my mate to be thoroughly Pissed off ... I started grumbling about Life and why was it making me Do this? . on a day when other people were tucked up in nice warm offices . why was I stuck twenty foot in the air knocking nails into bits of wood? ... My mate . who was a lot more philosophical than I was . told me to stop complaining . "Think of it this way" he said .. "we are . literally . putting a roof over somebody's head" That thought cheered me up no end . and we spent the rest of the day knocking nails in while exchanging fantasies about the people who would soon be getting up to all sorts in the bedrooms below us! ... Happy day!

Chase H. But what if life literally stops you from giving your life meaning? People have children to achieve meaning, but what if you can't afford children on your salary? People try to achieve their dreams to get meaning, but what if you never find your dream job? What if you're stuck in soul sucking jobs one after the other and feel like there is no hope? It's easy to say "make your own meaning." But what if the universe won't let you?

It should be added that science does not speak of survival as the "meaning/purpose" of living things in a normative sense, only in a descriptive sense. Science considers life/nature to be void of any normative elements or objective meaning, so that we are indeed left to make do with whatever subjectively meaningful things and experiences we can find. As the video mentions, any sense of value or meaning in an objectively meaningless universe can only be the result of whatever sense of value we subconsciously project onto the world and some of the things/experiences within it, or in turn, whatever meaning we perceive when we look out into the world. Thankfully, unless we currently suffer from an emotional disorder like depression, we can never get rid of our ability to perceive some things/experiences as subjectively valuable/meaningful, no matter how often we tell ourselves that life is objectively pointless. It is an inherent part of our human nature and, more specifically, an unavoidable result of our evolutionarily-developed emotional capacities. Our human brain had to develop an affective/emotional capacity to evaluate the world in terms of pleasant/unpleasant/exciting/scary etc impressions in order to allow us to pursue or avoid things and, thus, to be able to make any decisions at all. After all, a mind that cannot construct preferences is a mind that is unable to make decisions. Hence, we are left with a mind that cannot help but find certain things valuable and or meaningful. This will include some of our basic human needs, like food, drink, sleep etc. as well as more complex and individualistic interests that our cognitively sophisticated mind can conceive of. The categories mentioned in the video are definitely among the prime candidates for what is likely to contribute to a human sense of meaning or happiness, but the list is certainly not exhaustive. Basically anything that an individual can identify as something that is in itself subjectively meaningful to them can be the foundation for a meaningful life. Many things, like companionship, service, self-expression etc. are likely to apply to many people. But some people might find the greatest subjective meaning in being a solitary collector of bugs somewhere in the woods of Scandinavia. The variation among conceptions of meaningful lifestyles are immense. Still, as individuals, we have only a single one. Our own personal conception of what we find meaningful. A lot of which we might have in common with others, some of which is exclusively interesting to us. In any case, we have to get to know ourselves well and figure out what it is.

I'm in a business school and I worked hard to get where I am today, but I just don't see why I put all this effort, why I wasted all this time on this, I don't have any scientific knowledge nor something really interesting to do, finance sucks, there is no value besides making money, I truly don't know what is the meaning of this life, all we do is go to school, work for companies and die. This isn't how its should be, knowing that we all going to die, we should do what we really love to do, just imagine if no one had money issues how great our living would have been, people living for there passions...I'm pissed of this life right now...

@hjyryui
@hjyryui 8 лет назад
+jacob massengale This isn't actually a good question at all, it's actually a very loaded question although to be fair it kind of seemed like a joke, but perhaps not to the the other guy that replied seriously. Phrasing it as a 'what if' implies that the 'meaning of life' is something we inherently can't know for certain. This video provided a compelling argument for why that wasn't true, so in order to ask such a loaded question it seems you should need to first prove why the video is wrong in saying we can determine what meaning is by breaking down common thoughts and feelings people have that they associate with 'a lack of meaning'. We defined the word 'meaning', no animal or any life form we've seen has done that before. It is nonsense to think that something without a consciousness (i.e. nature, evolution) could give us meaning, it is inherently disconnected from the idea of 'meaning'. The idea that 'life has no meaning' doesn't even make semantic sense, when you think about this way, because life in a greater, collective sense does not have a consciousness either, no more than 'love' or 'death'. Only 'your life has no meaning' does, which shows us that meaning is something that can be found (or lost).

However, +Gentleman put it back up on our to do list since there it will always be ;-) I've done my 'research' for as long i remember me trying to become me and i do conclude to the same ideas The School of Life suggests. Even an organism does not have to find a meaning to exist in order to exist. Human beings are the only creatures that are concerned about the meaning of life and stuff like that.There is no meaning of life in my opinion. It's not “to be happy” because some people end their own life early? It’s not to “go to college” or “get a job” because some people don’t even make it that far.. The meaning of this life will never be understood unless we know why the universe and all these stars and planets exist. We cannot perceive the size of the universe. Maybe the meaning of life is for the human race to acquire enough knowledge to answer that question OR the only meaning life has is whatever we personally say it has... I really don't know.

The problem with life meaning is that it's not about Human Life, but Life as a whole concept. When you mess up this concepts you end thinking about feelings like sadnes or happines or anguish etc...wich are just some chemical reactions derived from our insticts of social survival as a social species. The meaning of life is to continue cycling just like the core of life "the DNA" does, adapting and absorving and deleting ways to survive as it became more complex and more efficient. And that process can´t be apretiated in just one simple 80 year or less living period. We got to see the bigger picture of the universe to being able to see it.

@brianfugate2446

I feel that the meaning of life is derived from our relationships with everything around us, like our inner relationships (relationships with ourself, so to fuel our ego or abide by our moral compass) and outer relationships (relationships with people, things, money, and everything beyond ourself that we have a relationship that brings us joy, or fulfillment). And to find happiness, or meaningfulness in your life you need to prioritize the relationships that bring you those things. So to find meaning in life you need to find what is meaningful to you as an individual because you will never find true meaning in a universal message that shouts the meaning of life, because there is none.

I always see it like Camus did: Just be conscious about the insignificance of life and the existing borders, but be confident and happy about it and just find joy in everything you do. I personally enjoy nature, literature and music because things like the smell of grass, the beauty of words or just the emotion of my favorite songs are remarkably soothing for the mind.

To me the meaning of life has always been to find meaning for yourself, meaning that it could mean absolutely whatever you want it to be. So you could either be pessimistic and say there is no meaning because you can't see any for yourself or be optimistic and find something you are passionate about and let your meaning come from that. However sort of ties in with that and adds a new unique perspective and is interesting to think about.

I'd add #4. Passion. With passion we are able to give our lives purpose and create meaning to an otherwise meaningless life. Also, I always aim to achieve a balance between enjoying the simplest of moments of every day life (like having a cup of tea), and at the same time work to take my passions to levels of greatness (in a very ambitious manner) This balance gives a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment, and the lack of an objective meaning of life doesn't seem to matter much. According to me , life is pointless .... What should we learn from it being pointless? Answer: Desires are what make us work , strive .. if there's no desire , there will be no life possible , even small cells in our body desire to multiply and pass the genetic info . We can learn from them ... What we do in life is get worried , be unhappy about stupid little world's desires ... We don't have to!! Just take care of your body, be kind to others, helpful , gentle , love women or men, love your parents , love your siblings , spread love and kindness and make money so that you don't have to struggle financially , Once u do all these things properly then consider pointlessness of this life and relax in eternal Joy

Once there was a study done of NDE victims(Near Death Expirience). Just after they were revived, people were surveyed. Many immediately said they saw Hell. They actually later changed their answer because they were so embarrassed. One man said he did see Heaven and spoke to God. He was not allowed to see his face, or he had to stay in Heaven. Instead of staying, the man was allowed one question of God. Flustered, he asked “What is he meaning of life?” God laughed and said he got that question very often. “The meaning of life,” God said, “Is to love.” Make what you want of it, but this was a real story.

I'm sorry for my inquisitive and sometimes quite skeptical or critical mind. But how do you arrive at your ideas and concepts? In this specific case: Why are there three and only three items on the list that you present as potential meanings of life? I reckon you are basing it off of some literature? Without further explanation it seems arbitrary to me, to include exactly three potential concepts for the meaning of life, specifically these three. I can see why 'communication', 'understanding' and 'service' might be on the list and especially the last one makes me think of the research of Martin Seligman and colleagues on positive psychology. But spontaneously I would think people could also find that 'creating', 'making change' or 'innovating' give meaning to their lives. And ther might be even more concepts. I don't mean to be disrespectful. But I also find that questioning what others tell you, especially when it comes to things like the meaning of life, is important.

Johannes Halberstadt Whenever you encounter this type of situation, where you are not quite sure how a person came to any sort of conclusion, consider asking yourself these questions: 1. How might they have come to any conclusion? 2. Am I comfortable with their conclusion? 3. How might I expand their conclusion to form a stronger or less broad conclusion? If you think carefully about Alain's message, he gives viewers a great opportunity to find meaning on their own. I understand how anyone might find his presentation on the Meaning of Life quite restrictive. We might find it unsettling to be told the meaning of life without a solid explanation as to how they came to their conclusion because it sounds like they might be trying to feed us a falicy as an authoritarian figure, so good on you for questioning. BUT, after some consideration with those three questions I posed, you might come to realize four important points as I have by watching this video: 1. Numbers make things easier to understand, with particular emphasis on the number three. A list of three feels imformative, but does not feel overwhelming. That is perhaps why Alain uses a list of three things (or a few more) in many of his videos. He may have had more ideas than Communication, Understanding, and Service in mind, but prioritized them since they are broad, practical things that everyone could use to acquire any sense of "meaning" in their lives. (This may not be true, but hopefully it may put into perspective why he chose three things). 2. His three ideas are broad. As stated above, this video, which covers a very touchey-feeley subject, could make people feel threatened because it gives an answer to a question they were looking to answer for themselves. This video may seem friendly but could also be trick by authority to keep us focused on "producing and consuming" as if the School of Life was a corporate scheme trying to answer deeper questions for us and therefore to keep us focused on other things. But I see it differently. In fact, Alain has structured his message so that it would be the opposite of limiting: he gave us the opportunity to figure out how to apply his own ideas in our own way. **He did rule out anyones idea of the meaning of life.** Making change and innovation and creativity might well be one person's pathway to finding meaning in their life, but Alain did not rule them out. A person can apply Alain's ideas with Communication and Understanding while working as a Political Leader, an Innovation Officer at the World Wildlife Fund, or a Opera Composer. 3. Alain may have gotten these ideas from patterns in human nature. The chance Alain picked up these ideas from Literature alone are low. Literature is helpful, but ideas presented from literature may not be as helpful as observing people for yourself. Authors of literature obersved life upfront and directly (without literature). So did Alain, probably. It is not difficult to observe and acknowledge the pain of a job (and life overall). If you have an unfulfilling job, you may wonder: do other people also have unfulfilling jobs like myself? Service is my favorite point Alain brought up for this reason. It brings up a very important point: we need fulfilling work, and perhaps the most fulfilling type of work involves knowing we are helping other people. Not only helping people in general, a secretary could be said to help people, but seeing the tangible results and smiling faces that show we are helping others. Conclusions in general are reached through patterns, and there are many patterns in human behavior, so it seems unlikely that Alain would be snatching some ideas like these without considering Primary Resources such as humans. (Although literature can very well communicate some grand insights into human needs, see School of Life's video on Suicide.) 4. Instead of simply questioning their method of coming to such a conclusion, see if you can expand their ideas to better fit your needs, if necessary. Personally, I find this video helpful and in no need of reconsideration. In fact, I think Alain's video is broad enough to help all, but also clear enough to keep me from wondering if it is in need of amendment. I agree that "questioning everything" is good, but remember that you should also question your own questions. Some questions can reach a conclusion faster than others, and some questions are better suited to certain topics, etc. Please know that this is not meant to be destructive criticism. I actually like the fact that you asked them at all, they are good questions. In fact, I responded because I essentially question a lot, and had the same question: "Why these three things?". I also don't know why he used them, but the above 4 points can help guide us towards a realistic idea of why. Hope this helps

Because all three concepts descend from the same concept - the breach of the internal/external divide. Meanings in language are arbitrary and don't exist naturally. We have to create them. A box is only a box when we give it a name and decide to distinguish it from other objects due to a list of arbitrary features. Simply put, we break the internal/external wall mentally (with 'understanding' that is 'communally' reinforced) and physically (through some activity that is hopefully noble, like service). Breaking down the border requires the self-delusion. We must 'trick' ourselves into believing that the 'truths' we have learned/created with others are transcendental and not just contained within our own heads. From this emerges both community + understanding, since other humans are required to reinforce our belief in transcendent meaning. Admittedly service is arbitrary - but it is an attempt to describe the physical breach of the internal/external. We must 'act' as though the meanings we have created are real, and so we must physically interact with the world. We could do this in a lot of ways, but the video has designated altruism as the key physical activity because it is the most moral.

This simple explanation seems to explain everything. Why is it that the most comprehensive and accurate description I have ever seen is in a RU-vid video? The simplicity and understanding doesn't make it feel robotic or ironically, meaningless.. it's calming. It all seems to make true sense now. After everything I've read from writers, scientists, and friends this makes it. It may not make it in how we feel when we hear a friend describe the world, but it's something we can understand. It's something we can live by.

There is subjective meaning and purpose.There is no higher meaning and purpose.Farting in front of the tv, farting on an expensive yacht or while doing eco agriculture...is still farting.

Billions of years ago before life was even a thing, there existed ancient cells and bacteria...which obviously now muted, multiplied/divided, and grew into you and me. Will it stop? No... and yes. Since this process we call "evolution" seems like it's not going anywhere soon here on Earth, unless extinction rises, such as plagues to a fucking large astroid impact.. As I have watched a lot of the videos your channel has put out, my friend. I have become inspired to say that you have encouraged me to broaden my own intellectual pursuits in philosophy and political science to the point where I actually read Nietzsche, Kirkegaard, Wittgenstein, and other philosophers and theorists. Also, to reply to your video of the meaning of life, I would say that the best thing that an individual can do to establish meaning in their lives is to find something that is personally gratifying and helps to elevate themselves to a greater realization of their humanity. Meaning that an individual finds value in something necessarily if they have been through a particular trauma or even tragedy that has made them value it even more. By being denied something that is good we, as an individual, value it more and establish meaning in our lives around it. For example: an individual who is consistently betrayed values loyalty or an individual who has been denied kindness is ever more grateful for when it is shown. What do you guys think? I would love to see what others think and dispute about this.

"Meaning is to be found in three activities in particular: communication, understanding and service." Thanks a lot for this very wise advice! I feel that " communication" is the most difficult one , "understanding" is the most exciting and "service" is the most beautiful one! I am sure science can help us in all three fields till a certain extend, but it is definitely not enough to teach us how to live and die. We fundamentally need a lot of help from literature, philosophy and art! There is a short video of an interview with Steven Weinberg, Nobel laureate in Physics, called " An honest view of life". I think what he says in those 3 minutes very much resonates with the message of this video and I also love the fact that he applies to the wisdom of Shakespeare there. If you have 3 more minutes, you must also listen to Victor Frankl in a video called "Finding meaning and purpose in our lives". He was a world famous psychiatrist as well as a Holocaust survivor. Ok, that American Gothic pitchfork gouge was incredible - well done on the animation here. I love having my mind straining to identify all these eminent historical references whilst they bob around comically, it's such a bizarre contrast. I'm not quite sure where I stand on the subject of this one (it is after all one of the greatest questions out there). All I know is that meaning, as I perceive it, is largely reliant on whims and passions, on fortune and bad luck. (EDIT: so it's not really there at all). As a positive circumstance arises the sun can seem to shine with you in mind; when the tables turn life can almost seem illusory. So I'm finding it most valuable to just neglect any consideration of meaning. That might be a little too straightforward though.
@jacsulex
@jacsulex 9 лет назад
The Manifold Curiosity Exactly! With or without meaning, it doesn't matter. People are just making a fuss on things, trying to be busy before their dying day that's all. People are simply trying to convince themselves that there is meaning, just something to make them feel good about themselves and the whole of Life... "Communication,Understanding and Service" are simply one of those (I can compare with the preachers and all that jazz). But they're all the same. Well, like it or not, it's per person: your trash my treasure and vice versa.

I just want to add/"correct" something. Yes, we ARE inherently selfish, and that is good. Being selfish is NOT ignoring other people, or seeking happiness at the expense of others, as we are led to believe. Selfishness is putting our own interestes before other people's. It is self-respect and self-love. If you like helping people, you are not altruistic - you are selfish. You are doing it because you enjoy it, not because you must. Actually, if you are altruistic, that is a bad thing. It means you will serve EVEN IF you don't want to, which eventually will lead to insatisfaction with life, exhaustness, and even might be an extra push towards depression (my case). Altruism makes helping and serving become an obligation, and therefore a burden. We all should be more selfish AND caring. Empathize with other people, and help whoever we might feel like helping. Because, in the end, a helping hand is only true if we do it by enjoyment, by pleasure, and not by moral, unconditional obligation.
@SirZelean
@SirZelean 7 лет назад
***** Well, yes, I guess that is indeed what it means today. But I like it better to see as I said, for two reasons. Firstly, because if selflessness is doing what's best for the others before doing what's best for you, so I like to think that selfishness is the other way around, doing what's best for you before doing what's best for the others. And secondly... well, that way is much more polemic :P
@reministic7165
@reministic7165 7 лет назад
This self-love stuff is not entirely but largely bullshit being pushed today. No, we should NOT be a little more selfish. We should be more selfless. We should try to think of others BEFORE our own sleves more. People these days don't want to commit to anyone or serve anyone. They are entirely narcissistic and self-centered
@SirZelean
@SirZelean 7 лет назад
Nukilik and why should we? Just to point out I'm not saying that we SHOULDN'T help others, just that it's unwise to destroy oneself to help others. You know, you can't help anyone if you destroy yourself in the process. You need to be happy and healthy to do your best for other people. So yes, that means you should put your own welfare in the first place. Plus, selflessness, as an ideal, is irrational. It just wouldn't work if everyone were selfless. Not to mention how it destroys our emotional balance to just be everyone's pet/slave.
@reministic7165
@reministic7165 7 лет назад
Because being selfless is one of the few beautiful things about people. Any idiot can follow the impulse to be selfish like a child. But when we say we love someone, we mean selflessness. We mean we care about their well being and needs over our own. I'd argue that if you've never loved something/someone enough to forget about yourself and your own needs/wants, you've had a sad life. That doesn't mean you always have to completely neglect yourself in ways that are not necessary. But plenty of people give their lives for the sake of a cause or a person and it's one of the most remarkable things one can do. These days people spend their days being self-centered and in speeches of self-love and self-care to justify their selfishness and become narcissistic pseudo-reactionary keyboard warriors. We need no incentive to be selfish.
@SirZelean
@SirZelean 7 лет назад
Nukilik and why is it beautiful? And it seems you didn't quite get what I said. A kid's toys are theirs. They don't have the obligation to lend them. They do run the risk of having them broken, or worse. It's their right not to lend, while I do agree that lending them is, indeed, admirable. But there is the catch: if they lend it on their own will, that's selfish. They are choosing to, they will lend because that's what they want. Selflessness is lending a toy while they DON'T want to. When they want to play with the toy and they still lend it, at their own detriment, they are forced to because it's "the right thing". From all the psychological studies I've done, they all agree that love without self-love is detrimental to our emotional and mental health. There is no other way to mental health other than self-care. I think that if you study a little bit of psychology, instead of assuming the truth, you'd agree with me. Actually, you are at the right channel to research about that. The School of Life is a renowned emotional health school, not just a youtube channel.

A decade ago I moved into a city core. Quickly I noticed a large number of abandoned cats. I began feeding them and over time I'd take one in and bring the animal to the vet and then find a home for him/her. Over 6 years I found homes for around 20 cats. This is working in the service of others. It was the most fulfilling time of my life. I've worked as a production scheduler in big business, worked for myself, wrote, painted, etc... But for me, nothing has been as rewarding as helping those cats from the streets to a home. I was in a relationship at the time. My partner and her family regarded this as "good" work initially. However, over time, I became the object of insults and at the end I was called a loser and my partner moved on. I don't think of myself as a loser. I know that this is the most meaningful work I have done in my life. Do I resent my former partner for not understanding. No. The majority of the human population sees the point of life as being the pursuit of material wealth and comfort. If you tell most people you are forsaking a car in order to save homeless cats they will not understand. My point is this. Your calling, your search for meaning in life is yours and yours alone. It can't be a life where you are trying to please everyone else. Or by doing what everyone else does. Study yourself. Learn yourself. Know yourself. And watch School of Life videos. They are the most amazing thing on the internet in my opinion.

@thanhtungbui7823
@thanhtungbui7823 7 лет назад
1. Why experience? You will die and all experience will be gone anyway. Why is it important to gather such great experience in your life? 2. You cannot really compare different types of experience. Today you may choose to go out or stay at home. Would it be more worthwhile being outside or staying at home? You can hardly know. Similarly, between a person who experiences an ordinary happy life and another one who has to endure a lot of pain but still achieve something great at the end of his life, whose life is more meaningful? I don't think it is possible to compare. The thing is, your life is meaningful when you feel that it is meaningful, there is no general definition for that. The video above is a good one because it does not actually tell us what the meaning of life is (it does, but that is not a good definition either). It only mentions 3 types of activities that will help us 'feel' more meaning in life. When there is no way to derive the meaning of life philosophically, it is better to do it psychologically.

@ioklmj11
@ioklmj11 8 лет назад
+kjk though I'm not completely agree with happiness being the sole purpose of life, I can still explain your wonder. The theory of happiness is targeted to the happiness to our society as a whole, but not just the happiness of individuals. The action of raping might create pleasure for one, but it imposes much more harm to society. When the harm is larger than the benefit, it brings detrimental effect to the society. I am still trying to figure out what meaning of life is, but I think it has to do with Human race rather than just ourselves. We are animals that are highly relied to each other after all.
@catprincess9
@catprincess9 8 лет назад
+kjk Raping someone is a violation of their individual rights. . When we live in a society (two or more people), we need to invent the concept of human rights which is a contract between two or more people, so that each can pursue his life without coming in each others way. So the moral purpose of existence is to pursue personal happiness without violating the rights of others. A truly moral person would not hurt others in the pursuit of his happiness.

Gee, nothing I can think of. Oh, except for emotional connectedness to other human beings, nature's awe-inspiring beauty, chocolate-dipped strawberries, literature, hikes with friends, hobbies, putting work into an endeavor and seeing it pay off, walking down your favorite street, going to your favorite restaurant with your best friends, learning new skills, expanding your intellect and about ten million other things that make life pleasurable and enjoyable. Do you seriously not experience any happiness that doesn't stem from your belief in an afterlife? That strikes me as a staggeringly vacant way to spend the one life you're given.

Calling all those who love The School of Life! We should share these videos with others more often! I've noticed that the number of views of most S.O.L. videos are actually quite low compared to even moderately successful youtube channels. My guess is that most of us watching these videos are fairly thoughtful and reflective by habit and thus less inclined to forward a link along simply because we like it. But considering how incredibly helpful the content of this channel is, I think we should make a point of spreading the word (via links) as much as possible. If there's one channel that I would like to go viral, it would have to be this one...

Creating your own imaginary meaning doesn't mean life is any more meaningful, you're just deluding yourself to think it does.

+Adam Sujkowski I'll copy a comment I've written to another idiot such as yourself; It baffles me that even after watching the video affirming the biological purpose of life, you came up with that comment trying to sound smart. Tell me, smartass, if the purpose of life is reproduction, what is the purpose of reproduction? Perpetuation of life? Okay, why? Why is all that species strive to do perpetuate life (of their own kind) ? This is where philosophy comes in. The essence of meaning is subjectivity. It is subjective but by no means unreal. We assign meaning to things, and I find that quite beautiful and liberating, enriching, even. When you think about it, life would be that much less rich, mysterious and fascinating if we all somehow had an explicit, objective purpose. It would be nothing short of oppressive and demeaning. You're a fool to equate meaning with delusion. I usually don't belittle others, particularly on this channel, but your ignorant, thoughtless, arrogant, invaluable, and perhaps most importantly of all, demeaning opinion is worthy of nothing but spite. Go read a book., and look up the definition of meaning before you do. Meaning is personal. It is there to be assigned to things that have no objective meaning. You find that a delusion, I find it beautiful.
@pacioklot
@pacioklot 8 лет назад
+Ivan Šalamon You are a moron, I've never said anything bad about life. Understanding that life is meaningless and purposeless is freeing and beautiful. It makes you immune to chronic depression and anxiety, the fear of death *completely* disappeares. Just because you regard meaninglessness as something negative doesn't mean everyone else does. Who the fuck said delusions can't be beautiful? You sure are an ignorant and arrogant one.
@ivansalamon7028
@ivansalamon7028 8 лет назад
Adam Sujkowski We are, in fact, in agreement, but you seem to be a moron for semantic reasons. Meaning is, by definition, subjective. Conscious subjectivity by definition cannot be a delusion. Therefore, subjectivity is not a delusion. You're also an idiot if you think subjectivity is in any shape or form a delusion. A delusion implies a disconnection from reality. Meaning is just a perspective of what this reality is. You're an idiot if you think that "creating my own meaning" doesn't make life any more meaningful, because it precisely does. Again, probably just a very arrogant semantic mistake on your part, but just in case it isn't, you are using meaning to bring across a point, you clearly value beauty, and you literally need meaning to decode absolutely everything in everyday life and make sense of it. It is fundamental to your existence, possibly to the very fact that you are conscious and able to perceive things. How you can call me arrogant when you tell people that their lives are meaningless and that they are deluding themselves is baffling to me. Like you, I have come to terms with the fact that life is meaningless, and it absolutely was liberating and enriching because it leaves room for *subjectivity*, not delusions. This is the problem I have with your argument.
@pacioklot
@pacioklot 8 лет назад
Ivan Šalamon There is one difference between us, I think that meaninglessness is freeing, you seem to think it's something negative. I tend to think that subjective claims are empty, for examle if someone said that the meaning of life is to beat your head against a wall he'd be just as right as someone who said that the purpose of life is to love people. You are saying that no matter what you say the meaning of life is, you are *always* right and I'm saying that no matter what you say the meaning of life is, you are *always* wrong. That's basically the same cconcept.
@ivansalamon7028
@ivansalamon7028 8 лет назад
Adam Sujkowski No, I agree with you. Meaninglessness is freeing. Freeing us to subjectively find something *within* this given existence worth living for and appreciating. Meaning is there to be assigned to meaningless things. You seem to think that when I say subjective meaning of life I am talking about an explanation of what life is. To that I use the platitude; Life is what you make of it. You *choose* meaning, you find it. You decide how you will value something and what it will mean to you personally. One constructs or seeks his own meaning(s) in life and what life is to *him*. There is no right or wrong, and that is only possible because there is no objective purpose of life. (Other than a biological one) In a nutshell, personal meaning fills the void of no ultimate or objective meaning.

First, kudos to the animators. I've mentioned before how much I like your animation, but this one was especially well done. 1:12 "We should start by saying there is no meaning in life outside of that which we can find for ourselves..." This seems to me to be an assertion; not a conclusion. Why isn't an objective meaning possible? Just because it is or maybe yet 'undiscovered' doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And just because it isn't to our liking - just because we'd prefer life have a different meaning - doesn't mean an objective fact must be discarded. "Could you and I with fate conspire to grasp this sorry scheme of things entire... Would not we shatter it to bits? And re-mold it nearer to the heart's desire?" So have we all felt since long before Omar Khayyam wrote his quatrain... The scientific view that 'Life is just DNA trying to get into the future' needn't seem melancholy - especially if it were rephrased as, 'The meaning of Life is the next generation.' In fact, it can be tonic to the chronic individualism and egoism of modernity - that of consuming the planet in this generation, rather than sustaining it for the next. The oldest advice in the world, that of the innkeeper-crone at the edge of the world in Gilgamesh, advised the hero to accept that part of the portion given to mankind was to "cherish the little ones who hold your hand." But you had already said, 0:56 "To wonder about the meaning of life is an extremely important activity." Conceivably, such 'wondering' - such awareness - _is_ the meaning of life. Another RU-vidr once said, "Whatever consciousness is - it covets Life." I'd only add, "...and vice versa. Except, of course that would be mere assertion, not conclusion... :)

ThePeaceableKingdom What if indeed there is an objective meaning to life?! And it is to bake pillows stuffed with succulents for your cousins!?!? ----- Truth is, nobody wants 'objective meaning' to life, all they want, and is searching for, is 'subjective meaning' for their own.

@richardmabe4186

I used to battle with the meaning of life. I even knew people who had depression or committed suicide because they suffered not finding meaning to their life. Eventually the question broke me. I had to accept there is no meaning to life or a purpose you absolutely have to fulfil. Existence is the basis of life, you can just live. I started to relax, enjoy my interests and being alive. I've never felt better and I still know life is ultimately meaningless. We are a little bit of life which has evolved and grown out of the earth. One day soon we will all return to the earth. Don't take yourself too seriously. Make more of the good things about being alive, we aren't here for long.

life has no meaning. in a little more than a hundred years every human currently living on the planet will be dead. nothing we can do will affect the universe in the slightest. we are but a mealsy grain of sand in an infinite beach that is the known universe. then again, you could argue that one may fabricate a meaning for life through ones appreciation for the loved ones

but we dont now if we are all going to die it could happen but we dont know it. and even if that is true we can still find meaning in life itself like mentioned in a video life does not have a objective purpose for us to fulfill rather we create it on our own even if that means nothing will be left ultimatelty but i get what you are saying sometimes i feel the same

I think your answer more precisely addresses the question of what we should do that could make us think our life is happily fulfilled rather than directly dealing with the philosophical question of "the meaning of life". But still a good answer, thank you.

Alicia Keys put it best: some people live for the fortune, some people live for fame, some people live for the 0qowjdf (couldn't understand what she was saying there), some people live just to play the game... point being, do what is important to you and go to your grave with no regrets. ps.... and don't hurt anyone, just saying ;)

I like the school of life's videos. But this video i didn't find it satisfying. Honestly, no one knows what actually is the meaning of life. Whether life itself is death or something else. But I would agree to what they have mentioned communication, service and understanding makes lives meaningful. Well here I can say one gets distracted which is the reason why one doesn't question what life's meaning really is... Some are way too detached and are always lost. I didn't like the thoughts portrayed on this video... It didn't really click my mind. But at the same time, it's better than what i have come across till date :)

Once our basic needs are fulfilled, we instinctively carry on looking for what make us feel good, Eg: We will choose a warm comfy bed to sleep rather than a cold and unpleasant one, we choose the sweetest fruit, we prefer beautiful views … we have been searching since the day we were born for things that bring our minds to these pleasant states; and happiness is the ultimate pleasant state. The problem is that these things only provided a temporal sensation, but we all would love to make it permanent; since the solution is obviously not by acquiring more things the answer lies in the mind ( the mind is the background against which everything exist) PS: Thumbs up to the School of life and its followers like you.

I love the point on service and the paradox it entails. As he mentions, we are inherently selfish, which begs the question; why do we help others? Do we help others just because we want to facilitate something for them, or do we help them to help us feel good about ourselves? If so, would it be beneficial for us as social people to have more or fewer people in need of help? Food for thought at 2AM...
