One of the chapters of Lifting Lives, the Legacy of Paul Anderson, a documentary film about the 1956 Olympic Gold Medal winner who gave up his fame and fortune to start a home for troubled youth in Vidalia, GA. The home opened in 1961 and is still in operation with an unbelievable success rate of 93%. This segment shows Paul as he appeared on You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx.

I really wish he had been allowed to lift in competitions after he had "professional" status, even if he would have been ineligible to win trophies. When Vlasov broke Paul's Olympic records, Paul made a couple of requests to lift officially, but was not permitted to. Later, when powerlifting started having sanctioned competitions, he was also exempted. So, even though he was squatting over 900 lbs. using the SAME weights (no wooden plates in the cases I am talking about), and to full depth, when the official record was still under 800 lbs., Paul's lifts did not count. Now there are people saying he did not even do the lifts, since they are not on the books officially. While there might have been some exaggeration at times, particularly of the backlift, it is a bit of a shame that many experts are pretty much saying that only his 1956 Olympic Gold Medal lifts count, and I have even seen one writer trying to discount those!

Casey Vee First of all Paul Anderson was an honest man. A rare commodity . If he claimed a certain wt was lifted , then it was lifted. Too many respectable and authoritative men over a span of years have consistently called Anderson the STRONGEST MAN they ever saw. Peary Rader , Terry Todd, John Grimek and a host of others were first hand eye witnesses , and reported unparalleled lifts. Idiots today, most of whom couldn't load his squat bar , make claims that he was on steroids , his squats were high , he cheated , and and other nonsensical bullshit. He could squat as deep as he wanted to. He was built to squat. If a human could be designed and constructed to be a squatting machine it would be Anderson. Pictures from that era Strength and Health , and Muscular Development give an idea how strong Paul was , squatting enormous weights with a smile on his face. A SMILE ! As they say haters will hate . 900? Legitimately I'd give him One thousand.

Back in 1986, we corresponded by mail for a few weeks. In his prime, he was in another universe - strength-wise unbeatable by anyone on the planet. His Olympic lifting records have long been eclipsed by men weighing 100 pounds less. But consider that PHDs weren't available in his day and he had no one to push him. We can only wonder what might have been had so-called amateurism been abolished by the early 1960s, a time when Anderson appealed to the stodgy powers that be of the AAU to let him compete once again.
@DrJohnnyJ

Johnny J its curious by comparaison with Serge Reding or shane hamman (trio are same Height/wheight) evidence of evolution in train and technic ! Shane Hamman is ibterresting because like Paul Anderson its an hybrid lifter cruising between power and oly lifts ! RAW PAUL LIFTS WAS VERY SUPERIOR (SQUAT AND BENCH IN LESS PROPORTION 350 and 65 in more WITHOUTD GEAR/SUIT)...EXCEPT DEADLIFT OR SHANE IS MORE STRONG (20 LBS in less NO MORE)...in despite of THESE DATAS SHANE HAMMAN BEST TRAINING LIFTS WAS 195/240 total IN SAME SESSION 435 .. .PAUL ANDERSON DO 145/210...and NEVER ABLE TO TO IT IN SAME SESSION....FOR SUCCEES SNATCH AT 145 PAUL FOCALISE TRAINING ONE MONTH ON SNATCH BUT JUST DO 190 AT CLEAN JERK (335 TOTAL) ..AND FOR HIS 210 CLAN JERK SAME THING. HE SNATCHED 135 (245 TOTAL)... IN BOTH CASE 100 OR 90 KGS (220/200LBS) LESS IN REAL TOTAL ...ITS GREAT LEVEL HETEROGENEITY

why wasnt he allowed to lift in competition?
@Michaelwing
@Michaelwing 7 лет назад
Because at the time only amateurs were allowed to compete. He became a professional after he started appearing on TV and in personal appearances. Back then, that was enough for you to be declared a professional.
@woffordwolf2071
@woffordwolf2071 7 лет назад

It was a different time. It hasn't been all that long (well, 30 years) since professionals were allowed to compete in the Olympics.
@woffordwolf2071
@woffordwolf2071 7 лет назад
Michael Booth so any famous person was not allowed to compete? but why were the competitions only for amateurs? does that mean you wouldnt be allowed to join the next Olympics if you already participated in one and appeared on TV?
@Michaelwing
@Michaelwing 7 лет назад
The competition was for amateurs because that is the way the Olympics were organized. So if you were paid to be on TV because of your sport you were no longer an amateur. You could be famous and still be an amateur as long as you did not profit from your sport. The Soviets and East Germans trained their athletes like they were professionals but were not technically paid.
