In today’s episode, Sidetrack Episode 71, Today I have a special episode that was previously released as special bonus episode on Patreon, since I am no longer on Patreon, I wanted to release it as a thank you to everyone for listening. This episode is titled The Church and Bank. I explore the development of banking during the middle ages and how the Church was involved in the movement of money and resources throughout Europe. The Popes of Rome had and have a great deal of resources at hand and how they managed those resources is fascinating and important to the development of the Western economy throughout history.

when you mentioned the Nobles, Crusaders and transporting Coin long distance - I think you got this turned around. The Nobles were expanding their blood lust for wealth and so needed to HIRE MERCENARIES and therefore the Nobles needed to take out loans to hire more soldiers to create private armies. The value of currency money has ALWAYS been tied to being enforced by the thug militaries, just as China created the FIRST paper currency with the value enforced by the Chinese military.

The Medici I believe produced four Popes of the Catholic Church being Pope Leo X (1513-1521), Pope Clement VII (1523-1534), Pope Pius IV (1559-1565) and Pope Leo XI (1605.)

I read this book called "Gold and Spices" because it inspired Spice and Wolf and I have to say... Medieval trading from a merchants perspective is fascinating. The fact that entire trades of a town can be halted because a new route is discovered is really interesting because a town can literally fall into chaos just because some dude found a route to another town that is easier. There's just a lot in that book, you should check it out.

I came at this from the perspective of walking away from a ground zero event after seeing the causes of civilization collapse. It just felt to current to what we are seeing right now. Then to go through all those developments as though that is what we may look forward to. To understand the psychology behind the developments is eye-opening! Quite interesting indeed.

Fantastic documentary on history of banking. Some of commentators have asked whether there was any existence of societies without ruling class dominating. Can state research references now. But European history and socioeconomic system was always pyramidal. So it was always based on some ruling class / elites / noble men. It was result of an worldview that’s of control and efficiency (decision making gets easier when things are pyramidal or hierarchical). On the contrary, aboriginals and tribals and natives of colonies often had decentralised system or system of governance rooted upon sustainability and reverence to nature (ex, Australian aboriginals). Problem was that those decentralised governance systems didn’t scale, so hierarchical or pyramidal systems took over in form of institutions or governments or corporations. Initially commoners (“worker class” as it was known those days) thought ill-effects of that pyramidal system wouldn’t affect them. But after abolition of traditional colonisation, with the help of central banks, governments of euro-centric countries started exploiting their own citizens. But now after 6000 years, we finally have the technology where one can create, incentivise and govern decentralised communities at scale, via blockchain.

I enjoyed this episode very much and I found it very informative. One focus area in history that I am interested in is the histories of the nobility, the aristocracy, the power elite. Historians often seem to take the existence of a ruling class for granted, but I would like to know just exactly who was in control of events at any given time and place, and just exactly how they got into that position. Then ideally I would like to be able to trace things forward to the present day. Has there ever been a time and place where the ruling class disappeared for a non-trivial period? Were the members of a ruling class ever members of that class for reasons other than birth or ancestry? Of course there are always exceptions to a rule or generality, but that is not exactly what I'm asking. For example, if one examines the histories of the European colonies, did a ruling class ever arise that was not based on the ruling class of the home country?

You miss out a major technical concern of your Templar Banking Model. Where did the Templars get their banking know-how from? It cannot have been from the clergy bcuz they absolved themselves from money matters as you correctly state bcuz of usury. The other thing that should be interesting to people is that the Templar knights had a more complex genesis than merely evolving into a multi national bank to finance crusades. More research needed to make this more interesting than any of the other Templar videos.

Military men started Knight's Templar to safeguard holy bloodline and holy gold long ago. Royals wed the line, alot-- Li of China, religious leaders, dukes as Visconti, Sforza, Orsini, then Medici Wed archduke Ferdinand Von habsburg royals then branches wed french, British royals. Eventually wed Von rothschild marriage two adolph carl married 8th duke argyll george campbell the last Commander of the knight's templar (99% family was murdered, as thieves sought to steal gold and banks). You're accurate. Military necessary to safeguard duty.
@robsellars9338
@robsellars9338 28 дней назад
@@annjoyce579 Thanks, that's a really interesting reply, especially about the Medici involvement. Have you done any research on this? The military knights (the original 9 Templars) all came from France and journeyed to Jerusalem themselves at first, perhaps to recce the route and assess the enemy strengths/vulnerabilities. It would have been a suicide mission to make that trip as a knight with no soldiers as supporting troops, so it's likely that these 9 knights already knew about the route or had a Jewish guide and could travel incognito to Jerusalem. It seems that these knights were connected through the Benedictine priests and the Jewish principality of southern France called Septimania. It would not surprise me at all if these first Templar knights had Jewish Origins and were supported later on by other Jews that managed the banking and logistical operations. Imagine the irony of the situation if this were the case, a whole knightly order set up to defend the faith of Christian Europe but headed and managed by Jews (their sworn enemies). It would make sense of everything about the Templars, where their knowledge came from, why they were motivated to fight the muslims to win back their holy land and also the mystery about why they were disbanded. It was common practice in mediaeval times to default on Jewish loans and if it had been learned that the Templars really were Jewish at the top, then it would explain the king of France wishing to expose this fact. Of course the Pope could not allow this information to go public as it would destroy the Church's credibility with commoners and kings alike, so he had no choice but to disband the order on accusations that were normally made against the Jews before they were burned at the stake.
