Another read along book club begins, with The Memory Polic by Yoko Agawa. I'm thoroughly enjoying the book so far. It's my kind of sci-fi. Let me know how you're feeling in the comments.

1:36 I can't imagine how difficult it is to translate a novel; any poetry may be lost or untranslatable, so it's best to make the writing... utilitarian.

good point. I know a lot of things don't really translate perfectly too, so it'll never be one to one. Maybe that's why they stay away from it. The translator might be injecting too much of his/her style into the prose.

@@JasonFuhrman Yeah, I've often wondered about that. A friend of mine has her Danish books translated into English, but she can also speak the language, so it's easier for her to detect when the translation is off.

OMG! I'm not a big fan of books. But I began to love this book simply because the flow of language is super calming.

Same. It has this cozy feeling to it.

So far, I like the story. Interesting concept. I didn’t really know what to expect, but the whole idea of losing a whole concept like that is interesting. My thinking was that the signified was lost and the signifier was left to hang empty and devoid of meaning. Slowly, the signifier would be lost, too, but only because there is no reason to maintain it. So, “bird” and “rose” are just sounds with scant meaning attached, and these signifiers will gradually be lost over time, too. My favorite part is the bit with the old man and his lack of caring about their lost meaning. The story mentions that the emotional content is also lost, so why should he care? Why would anyone? What does this imply? I also wonder how deep she will get into the technical details of all this, though that seems obviously secondary.

It feels like soft sci fi to me so far, so I'd be surprised if she goes into any extreme detail. I think those sculptures have to do with something big though.

The technical aspect was bothering me at first, then came to slowly realize that this is the type of book that makes it secondary. Then I looked it up on goodreads and one of the tags is 'magical realism'... all of a sudden everything made sense...

@@shesokayiguess definitely lighter sci-fi. And the Japanese perspective is very apparent, which makes for an interesting story.

Hahaha that seems to be a trend. It must be on reading lists all over the world.

Maybe it's the way you're reading it, but the writing doesn't seem plain to me. It has its own flow... an embedded poetry. It may also be that the concept is intriguing enough ( _disappeared_ memories) that the words evoke a more personal experience? Anyway, any further embellishment would've clouded the meanings, so, it seems perfectly written.

Plain was probably the wrong word. There are some interesting similes in it I noticed. I think when you're in first person you need to be careful to not get too poetic unless the narrator is that kind of person.

i dont know if you knew this but this book is based on Anne Franks diary. Thats why in chapter 5 when she stated that the wind was discriminating the rose petals it was an allegory to the Nazi picking out and killing the jews

I did not know that, but it makes sense now with her hiding her editor under the house. Thanks for the insight!

Ch 1-6 I was not feeling it , 7-8 it started to get more interesting As you said the writing is simple and the pace slow - I wasn't expecting that so maybe I just wasn't in the mood for something like this. I'm interested enough to see how it ends and it's a fairly short book (if it was longer I might have DNF'd by chapter 6 lol)

haha that bad huh? For some reason, even though it's slow, I'm really enjoying it. She is able to create an interesting atmosphere with just enough to keep me reading.

Based on what you’ve read so far, what is one pivotal moment that has most heavily impacted the main character of your novel? How have they been changed/influenced by this specific moment?

@@JosueLovesCats the climax I'd say, but don't want to spoil what it is in this first episode. But she's resigned to it, strangely, which makes it all the more interesting.

That's what threw me off the most. The amount of things the protagonist faced that didn't have a huge impact on her.
