The older guy (the one with the wife) is the one Margo told the chef about who asked her to keep eye contact with him while he masturbated and tell him she was his daughter and they loved each other. The older couple mention their daughter, Claire, who she says looks like Margo and he says doesn't (denial). It seems like the daughter might be dead or estranged from them, but it isn't very clear. The mother is pleased to see someone who looks like her.

Oysters and lemon mignonette - Common flavors put together that have to be broken down and deconstructed, foreshadowing what happens to the guests. This is meant to be taken as Chef throwing down the gauntlet. Amuse Bouche - More foreshadowing. Charred lace - crater. Milk snow - ash from the fire. Cucumber and melon - the guests. The Island - Scallop on a rock - Chef presenting himself to the guests. Plants - "in the weeds" Breadless bread plate - straight up snarking at picky customers. But you can also make a case for Lilian's plate having a broken emulsion on purpose as his way of saying SHE'S as useless as a broken emulsion. Memory - Self explanatory The Mess - Pressurized vegetables - literal pun. Bone marrow - blood. Beef jus - sweat. Potato confit - tears. Man's Folly - Plum vinegar exists because of Umeboshi, whey plays a vital part in making yogurt, sea kelp and lettuce are what keeps the oceans biome from wreaking havoc. But everyone either doesn't know that or forgets, because they don't taste good, aren't as attractive, or can be very difficult to work with in their natural form. It's the same with women, especially when they try to speak out against unfair treatment like what the chef describes. They get called things like "bottom feeders", like crabs. Final scene with Margot/Erin eating the cheeseburger - She didn't care about giving him peace of mind. She just wanted to survive. And Chef acknowledged that. Using his menu as a napkin - She never believed anything he said for one second. She is, in fact, a taker that knows her worth. And that's why she lived.

If you liked this, I'd suggest Phone Booth (2002). Meanwhile, I was hoping the girl from Brown would have replied "No, I got scholarships." Then Chef would have had a reason to rethink it, but he likely would have still let her die because of the stealing from her boss stuff.

The Menu is definitely one of the most interesting horror movies I've ever seen, from the theme to the characters and the horror it's very interesting

I wanted to hear about the nicest restaurant in her hometown, Tyler! How do you say something is clean and then say it's the ocean. The ocean isn't clean. Be sure to brag how your chef at home is just as good. They love that at restaurants. Dipping sauces with nothing to dip in. Yay! If my staff does catch you, you will be eaten by a giant cat . . . What would they have done if no one pitched "everyone dies"?

Ive often wondered if Tyler told his girlfriend her the truth that everyone was gonna die, and asked her to go anyway, and THAT'S why she dumped him.
@unvoicedapollo3318
@unvoicedapollo3318 Месяц назад
I think that's one of those things meant to be left open to interpretation. His gf could've realized what a pretentious prick he was. But there is a very real possibility he told his gf the truth & he was just so full of himself he thought they could make it out by impressing chef with his knowledge.

I looked up to make sure it wasn't cannibalism but didn't look at any other spoilers (if that even counts as a spoiler).
@gnarlynikki
@gnarlynikki Год назад
If you Google “is the menu about cannibalism” it automatically pops up with an article highlighted that says “Despite speculation, "The Menu" is not, in fact, about cannibalism” so yeah, it can be looked up without spoilers.

It's fine to do art for yourself, but I do think it's really important for artists to be paid for their work too (which, obviously, you aren't saying it isn't, but I just have to put that in there).
@JeshuaSquirrel
@JeshuaSquirrel 9 месяцев назад
The first time I watched this film, I saw the loud entitled fanbase of Star Wars, Star Trek, even Doctor Who--the ones who don't want anything to change--as also being in that set of guests. The guests represented people who dissect each part of art, no matter the form. People who think they are entitled to make any sort of declaration or analysis on a piece of art beyond what it meant to them personally. You don't like that Doctor Who is overtly trans-friendly, that's fine. But who are you to declare that Doctor Who as a franchise is over and needs to be shut down. You were the first reactor I recall pick up on that this is about all art forms.

The chef could have done a million things instead of murdering rich people (and members of his staff--even though they agreed, they were clearly in his thrall in some way). We know he is probably rich too. He could have started a restaurant for lower budget customers or quit and traveled the world or taken up macrame or written a book. But he picks this. And he kills an actor because he was in one movie he didn't like. There would be no actors left if this is a death-penalty offense. I would rather be shot than burned to death in chocolate. Have you ever gotten that hot chocolate on your arm (not the drink)? That was the worst death and played as a joke or artistic. Ha. Sorry. I have some thoughts about this movie.
@AnnekeOosterink
@AnnekeOosterink Год назад
Slowik knows he is part of the problem, it's why he has to die too. The reason the actor has to die is because he betrayed his art. Like Slowik himself. He chose money over art, he played in a movie that was terrible, he says it himself, bad script, bad part, but paid well. Slowik says it about himself too. He chose to leave his badly paying job that he loved, to be unhappy and rich(er) as a renowned chef.
