It’s kinda sad that any horror movie involving some sort of eating either in a trailer or as a premise for a movie automatically brings “cannibalism” into the conversation. Goes to show how originality has died although The Menu shows promise which is why I’m so glad they didn’t go that route or it would’ve been a cliche now it’s unique that way

Tyler was there because he was the obsessed type that sought to explain away every minute detail of the chef’s craft leaving no mystery or wonder. . Taking away the sheer innocent enjoyment of it. Chef said it himself. “You are the reason the mystery has been drained from our art.”

Yes, and Tyler is also the kind of "fan", that knows everything about the art theoretically. Has all the tools and toys and whatever, but probably has not used any single one of them ever in his life. It's like the people who have all the most expensive professional tools in their shed, know all about different techniques, but could not hammer a nail into a wall if their life depended on it. Literally. Or "artists" who have a huge collection of brushes and paint and all the best canvases, who can talk without end about color theory and whatnot, but have never actually done a single stroke.

The way his face subtly lights up at "a cheeseburger." Chef found his passion again; and so, she lives. I love this movie, so hard. A brilliantly dark statement on the pretense of fine dining, both of the restaurant and its patrons.
@Tomas_France_
@Tomas_France_ Год назад
Not really about fine dining. It’s message is clear. Fienne’s character was simple, wanted the fame, yet saw how unfulfilled he was. You have Tyler, a wannabe (American), stupid, thinks he knows best, yet can’t do anything. He reflects the morons that post on instant gram, and the Chef saw he knew nothing. Then you have the older couple. They ate there numerous times, yet couldn’t even remember the ingredients. Chef saw they dined there for the experience, so yes, that one was fine dining. The actors. They were just playing a role for his upcoming show. Then the Wall Street people. They were the stereotypical rich, and owned Chef’s restaurant, so they expected to be treated as gods. The reviewer was just a look back at how she destroyed small business in terms of finer dining, so again, there it is. The Chef was just a simple cook who lost his joy cooking for people who don’t care about their food. Pretty bland movie. ATJ and Fiennes saved it from being complete garbage

Actually, I think she dies at the end. If you listened to Elsa explain what happens to the beef at the slaughter house, she said that the beef will kill you if you don't eat it before it's expiration date and that it's basically now. Margot takes her second bite after the restaurant blows up. As she wipes her mouth with the menu, she looks at it after and most likely noticed that there is no beef on the menu. You can see the realization in her eyes that she's going to die as the music starts to swell, she takes another "screw it" bite and then the movie cuts off. That's also why Chef "let her go" letting her think that she"won". He said that "everyone", including her, is dying in the end. It was her choice to die with the "givers" or the "takers". She was just the last 😂😂😂

I also went into this movie expecting the secret ingredient to be people. It just felt obvious that everyone would be killed and served up. Or people would be getting picked off one after the other until only one was left. I'm glad it didn't go that route. This movie was a lot more subtle than I expected, but I think it helped make it stand out. This is most definitely a weird movie, but something about the tone of it is just so interesting. I've seen it a few times and I still think it's sort of like the cheeseburger at the end of the movie. A couple notes. Leguizano based his character on Steven Seagal. Also, i think the Chef included the Actor because he had abandoned his art to do the film just for the money. It was Anya's idea that her back be to the kitchen forcing her to turn around. She said it was worth the neck pain. All the cast were on set every day so they would mime and ad lib in the background for other people's scenes. In the end, Erin provided an experience of a good customer for the Chef. There is also a theory that Erin might not have gotten away as the beef in the burgers coukd be a day old as Elsa described at the beginning. Overall, this movie really spoke to me. I saw the over-obsessed fans of any prooerty in the dining guests. The canon-hawks, the gate-keepers, the continuity-slueths, etc. All the people who have started sucking the fun out of movies and TV these days.

From the original script: Lillian wasn't completely exaggerating when she said she put Chef on the map: He had another high end restaurant before Hawthorne, called Tantalus. Got 2 Michelin stars 2 years in, then closed up shop. Isn't heard from again until 3 years later, running a taco truck in Portland. He agreed to the interview only if he could keep his privacy, his own land, and it had to be by the water so he could source his own fish. It's established the movie star has a peanut allergy during the tour, and this turns out to be setup for the menu's eighth course, where Felicity is ordered to force feed him a dish completely comprised of peanuts so as to kill him through anaphylactic shock. Anne (wife of man who paid Margot to look like his daughter while j*cking him off) actually couldn't eat The Island as is due to a shellfish allergy. Hers was salmon. The broken emulsion gag escalates to where the servers literally waterboard Lillian with it. The restaurant has hidden cameras in the dining room, so even if Elsa missed something, it still got caught. The taco truck Chef was running was, according to him, the happiest he'd ever been, but Margot calls him out on it later, asking why he parked his truck at a Food Expo where he KNEW food critics were going to be, if he wanted to be left alone. Man's Folly was supposed to have more details about a woman chef's actual experience in the kitchen, from harassment to stereotypes. The women DO get bread with Man's Folly, and it IS as delicious as promised. You can even see Tyler chewing on bread when Chef comes up to confront him afterwards. Not only did Tyler bring Margot knowing she would die, he sincerely thought Chef was going to spare him. And even when called out on it, he STILL didn't apologize or take it back, because all he cared about was experiencing the menu. Them all coming to the kitchen to watch Tyler screw himself over wasn't originally in the script. They were just supposed to watch from the dining room. Margot makes another bid for her life before being ordered to go get the barrel. Which Chef appreciates enough to tell her so. Margot smiles upon seeing Tyler's hanging. Lillian realizes she's never going to get to write about this last experience, and THAT ends up being her real just desserts. Instead of dropping the ashes to set it all on fire, Chef originally drops a match. The last scene is of firefighters combing through the burnt wreckage, and the very last thing we see is the one photo of Chef as a young man, flipping a burger, but happy.

That might have been the best burger I've ever had, and made me a customer for life, I had to go home that day and look up what aioli is (it's a garlic mayonnaise). My go-to order now is their spicy burger, which has a spicy sauce, pickles and jalapenos. As others have pointed out, the pictures in Chef's house are a good clue, the one time he's actually smiling. I remember dying of starvation, while seeing this film and that's why I did want to get enough food before I came into the cinema's room. Furthermore, this movie is literally "The hunger games of the kitchen".

Tyler was a representation of people who think they can cook because they watch cooking shows. Shows that kind of take the mystery and magic of the art of cooking away from really great chefs. I think all of the people there know they deserve what they are getting and are just willing to be a part of the chef's art in the end.

Oysters and lemon mignonette - Common flavors put together that have to be broken down and deconstructed, foreshadowing what happens to the guests. This is meant to be taken as Chef throwing down the gauntlet. Amuse Bouche - More foreshadowing. Charred lace - crater. Milk snow - ash from the fire. Cucumber and melon - the guests. The Island - Scallop on a rock - Chef presenting himself to the guests. Plants - "in the weeds" Breadless bread plate - straight up snarking at picky customers. But you can also make a case for Lilian's plate having a broken emulsion on purpose as his way of saying SHE'S as useless as a broken emulsion. Memory - Self explanatory The Mess - Pressurized vegetables - literal pun. Bone marrow - blood. Beef jus - sweat. Potato confit - tears. Man's Folly - Plum vinegar exists because of Umeboshi, whey plays a vital part in making yogurt, sea kelp and lettuce are what keeps the oceans biome from wreaking havoc. But everyone either doesn't know that or forgets, because they don't taste good, aren't as attractive, or can be very difficult to work with in their natural form. It's the same with women, especially when they try to speak out against unfair treatment like what the chef describes. They get called things like "bottom feeders", like crabs. Final scene with Margot/Erin eating the cheeseburger - She didn't care about giving him peace of mind. She just wanted to survive. And Chef acknowledged that. Using his menu as a napkin - She never believed anything he said for one second. She is, in fact, a taker that knows her worth. And that's why she lived.

This movie was well marketed to imply cannibalism, can’t help feeling some disappointment that that isn’t part of this thriller.

Best cheeseburger recipe I've tried was from Gordon Ramsey on one of his shows, and the key is mixing finely diced onions and mustard into the meat before cooking properly.

To me those "tacos" didn't look good at all. A slab of meat and a tortilla. No tomatoes, no salsa, no sauces or topping of any kind. I love a good taco, but I don't think I'd be able to choke down that dry, unseasoned thing the chef was serving. The only food which looked good was the dungeness crab dish the ladies got. That and the wine.

Supposedly this is the recipe for the Double Cheeseburger from the movie 2 lbs. 80/20 ground beef 2 tsp. kosher salt, divided 1 tsp. black pepper, divided 1 small (4 oz.) yellow onion, thinly sliced (about 1 cup) 8 American cheese slices 4 sesame seed hamburger buns, toasted Dill pickle chips and ketchup 1. Divide and roll ground beef evenly into 8 (4-ounce) meatballs. Do not overwork. 2. Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium high. Place meatballs, 2 at a time, in hot skillet. Place 1 square of parchment paper over each meatball. Using a large spatula, flatten each ball into a 5-inch round patty. Remove and discard parchment. 3. Sprinkle top of each patty with ⅛ teaspoon of the salt and a pinch of the pepper. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of the sliced onions on each patty. Cook until bottoms are crisp and deep brown, 1½ to 2 minutes. Flip patties; sprinkle each with ⅛ teaspoon salt and a pinch of pepper, and top with 1 slice of cheese. Cook until bottoms are deep brown and cheese is melted, 1½ to 2 minutes. Repeat with remaining meatballs, salt, pepper, onions and cheese. 4. Put pickle chips on bottom of each bun, top with 2 patties, and cover burgers with top bun halves. Serve with ketchup and/or your desired toppings and sauces. Serves: 4 Active time: 20 minutes Total time: 20 minutes

It’s interesting to think Tyler either went knowing he would die with the other guests or if maybe he thought he’d be spared. Either way shows how self absorbed and obsessed he is.

I don't know ... the ending was a let down considering the sophisticated , suspenseful build up . This could have turned into a modern version of ' The Most Dangerous Game ' , with that small , intense Asian woman in the roll of the Cossack henchman and loyal servant of the master chef . Perhaps the real dangerous aspect of the evening would be evident by the other cooks and staff bringing out vicious attack dogs , so that escape would clearly be quite impossible . But yes , this was a weird film .

In regards to the favorite cheeseburger topping question. Do you mean sauce or food item? If sauce: tzatziki, if food item: bacon or avocado.

The film follows a foodie and his date traveling to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu but reveals shocking surprises throughout the menu. I though this was a black comedy horror film? The real horror from this movie is... the s'more. And ordering the cheeseburger saved Margot's life. Sucks to be Tyler!

I thought this movie was amazing because of the constant misdirection. I feel that the people who are commenting that "you are sick" OR "need Jesus" aren't truly understanding what is going on in the movie. The Chef and his crew got to where they are because of the abuse they have received from the critics, the fanboys and the unappreciative patrons. I'm not justifying what the end result was but Margot/Erin was allowed to leave because she genuinely appreciated the burger. That was what was missing from his work, people enjoying his food. All the people there were ripping apart the dishes or just consuming without thought. This was a prime example of what happens when people's work is not recognized and taken for granted.

What gets me is, seemingly inexplicably the same “guest” that are desperate, fearful and panicked for their own lives, just stop with that and passively accept painful deaths-- while they weren’t drugged, physically bounded and or mentally incapacitated at all… and the definitely were not “converts” at all too… that’s one plot hole for this movie, which makes it all fall apart for me.

They are a sous-aide-cult. ;) Anyway, I don't think the chef being having a deity status or mesmeric lemming leader status is the really thing here. They are simply all tired and disillusioned by the entire kitchen hell. It is known as one of the most stressful and toxic work environments there are. The scene where he is stabbed illustrates that part. He knows he was part of what was made miserable for and then perpetuated by so many. And so offer a demonstrative tribute for it. May have been something similar for the main meaty course guy.
