The film is literally AMAZING. Not even a single minute of boredom. So unique and difficult to describe clearly it's genre. But for sure what's going on in this story will captivate you! Highly recommended.
Absolutely amazing! I am a 30 year chef and to be perfectly honest... not gonna say many kitchen & industry people wouldn't smile and nod at many points through this film. As well, everything was so well done. Fresh new story, great social commentary, wildly accurate portrayal of how our craft has been compromised by social media, critics, and people just calling themselves 'foodies' without any actually knowledge of what we put in to and sacrifice for our craft. This is by far one of the best movies I've seen this year. Perfect blend of comedy, thriller, dialogue, and stellar acting. Really cannot say enough. I'll leave it with... the trailer doesn't do the movie justice and you think you know what this movie will be.... until you don't.
You're totally right, but as someone who is on the other side of the restaurant, I actually think that another point of the movie was that the "craft" is sometimes taken to an absurd when instead of going to a restaurant you're going to an art gallery or a museum, which makes it a totally different experience
This is exactly the kind of film I love. It’s darkly hilarious, focused and immaculately executed. Nicholas Hoult delivers a masterclass performance. One of my favourite actors. Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor Joy are also electrifying. A true gem
So, I watched this movie by myself first... when I saw it, I knew my mother was going to love it. I love cooking, so I made us a tapas tasting menu at home, to go with "each course" of the movie, so every time a new course was about to be served, I'd quickly pause it and go and take out what was done next. Highly recommend for a watch party, to go a course meal with it, it makes it feel way more immersive.
Just helping u out with a really funny & almost perfect joke🙇♂️i’ll delete my subtle wingman correction whenever u lmk u edited😅 **becomes** (w/ an s) **+a thriller** (adding the “a” is optional) **in it** (instead of “in the movie“ Ooor you could also change “everything” to **every movie** & leave the end of the sentence as is🤷either way works)
Visually the film is beautiful and the acting is wonderful. Anya was perfection in it. I loved how her character developed and how she managed to manipulate her way through the film. It is very difficult to pull off a movie that is consistently thrilling all while being a brilliant dark comedy and The Menu is just that.
Do you think her character developed? I felt it was consistent throughout. She wasn't supposed to be there, she was better than the others (more empathic), and that allowed her to see a way out after speaking with Chef and seeing the mementos he kept.
I saw this trailer in theatres and after about 20 seconds I was like 'i want to watch this' and had to literally close my eyes and plug my ears otherwise the whole movie would be spoiled for me. I hate it when trailers do this and it's so very common.
I used to work in restaurants and this movie gets so much right about them, down to the *taptaptap* of the foodie telling someone they need to take a photo first.
@@endor8witch It’s everywhere that people yell, “Yes Chef!” and are told we’re all part of a family? Yeah, I definitely hear everyone yelling that everywhere I walk…
For some reason, this reminds me of 'Ready or Not', and 'Fresh'. Funny enough, both of them are from Seachlight Pictures, and 'Fresh' was also produced by Adam McKay.
In case you are interested here are the restaurants that are "mocked" in The Menu: *Noma* in Copenhagen (The mention of the “perfectly unripe” strawberry is from the chef of *Noma),* *Blue Hill* at Stone Barns, *Mugaritz* in the Basque Country, *The Willows* in the Pacific Northwest, chef Francis Mallmann’s private island *La Isla* off the coast of Patagonia. The spice racks are replicated from the kitchen at the now closed restaurant *El Bulli,* house made granola in gift bags are from *Eleven Madison Park.* The single raw scallop perched on a craggy rock surrounded by carefully tweezed seaweed and algae is a replicate of a dish at *Atelier Crenn.* Crenn developed the menu for the movie. Finally, the amuse-bouche served on the boat is a reference to a signature dish from chef Thomas Keller at *Per Se.*
Same article- “This isn’t the first revelation regarding the restaurant industry’s dark underbelly. It’s exactly the kind of harsh culture that The Menu, which features an uncannily similar restaurant, satirizes. The New York institution Blue Hill, which is run by chef Dan Barber, was recently accused of brutal working conditions, such as allegedly mishandling a rape allegation. Mario Batali, who once owned a slew of restaurants such as Del Posto, recently settled two assault lawsuits. Edouardo Jordan reopened JuneBaby this year; his popular Seattle restaurant closed last summer when the majority of his staff walked out in the wake of a Seattle Times investigation into accusations of sexual misconduct and unwanted touching.” men really act like they have un-warranted entitlement if they are paying, a manager is NOT entitled to your body and having lost a reference is better than having mind and body at war for many years over being taken advantage of, make change in your situation sooner than later if they continue because if they don’t learn, they continue doing it, talk to them clear as day and strong, do not make him want revenge as men tend to, show him that ‘you can’t believe this way of being is okay in his mind’ don’t let the boundaries slip if you know they are not a good person or do worse things to others, std ridden creeps are the hardest to get rid of, leave the place even if it means losing one reference.
My bad, I missed a part, the movie is about an island private chef’s menu. I’ve worked on Island’s off my main island before- summer before this, they all were very bad with t4’s, paying on time, enough staff on, new training of people they hired and not taking care if they took breaks during the twelve hour shifts. I worked at two good places and one semi-strange place. The places all had their own strange details like bosses with neurotic comments when you brought up schedules or beef with the other restaurants. I lived in a tent at first, looking for places, the island has empty houses in winter but summer there is nothing, even for the workers. I worked two jobs. I was living in a tent cause the restaurant that hired me, insisted I move out there (and I went over two islands by ferry and subletted my suite for the summer) they had told me I would be a ‘desert server’ instead I was the dishwasher/garbage person and everyone acted above me and the accommodations were NOT the ‘glamping’ tent they showed us, it was a normal tent behind the bottle recycling and garbage area and there wasn’t enough room in there to properly store clothes because of the air mattress that would deflate each day. They got very mad when I caught Covid, they sent me off the island and then called me and said I was fired and I couldn’t live on property. I had all my belongings there so I returned with w tent and money to pay someone to stay on their property. Thankfully there was lots of good hippie’s left over from the seventies who also hated the rude restaurant owner and told me all the locals know del Lerena is terrible and Forage Cafe is where I should’ve worked instead. I posted online in a group for that island saying I had money to rent land for tent. A professor let me stay on his land while I got my job at a hippie smoothie place that also served like chia cups. Then I found a trailer with a bathroom inside for rent. The owner helped me move in fast, cause the summer in 2021 had strange storms The weird one was a coke head owned pizzeria, he gave me no breaks he left me in charge of four 16 year olds. The 15 year old got him to make sure we got breaks, he also got us lemonade on the house and dollar pay raise. He sold pizzas for 20 each and had five people on staff so tips weren’t much. My morning job was at a juice bar by a hippie store that sold clothes and flowers, there I got more tips since there was only three on staff. However he started putting me on opening alone, I barely understood how to make the coconut milk and oat milk using their blenders and the glass jars 🫙 for filling up often almost dropped. There i got food after shift like the pizzeria and a drink too, cause renting a trailer for the summer cost me my first paycheque, I didn’t have money for food rlly, which cost double since it was brought over by two ferries. So I ate corn chips and salsa and coconut water on days off, I sat on the beach and read books I got from the free store and used my tips on new clothes made here and on rent at home- I made so much working two jobs I was able to pay rent at home until winter.
By the way, if visiting a gulf island BOOK YOUR HOTEL OR CAMPING TRIP MONTHS IN ADVANCE, GET TO YOUR FERRY HOURS IN ADVANCE AND DURING SUMMER SEASON ALWAYS CHECK THE WAITING TIMES AS TO CATCH LAST FERRY IT SOMETIMES TAKES FIVE HOURS. SHOW UP FOR RESERVATIONS FOR FERRY THIRTY MINUTES EARLY OR ITS VOID AND YOULL HAVE TO WAIT AT BACK AND ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CREDIT CARDS, CASH AND DRY FOOD IN CASE YOU HAVE TO SLEEP IN CAR AT FERRY TERMINAL AND CHECK CLOSING TIMES OF CAFE AND STORES
And don’t forget to tip your waitress cause the people in back usually get twenty percent. If you want, tip person and also do the credit machine one Secondly, if you are gonna run out of money, don’t tip fifty, tip less and eat chips and salsa instead of every meal out. Don’t make the service people pay for your shitty finincial decisions then expect others to pay for your lack of finicial literacy
The movie is phenomenal. So much tension, mystery and also extremely funny. Acting is on point. Could not keep my eyes away. and I don't like and can't watch horror movies. It's like a little horror psych comedy drama. Just amazing
I didn´t think this was a horror movie - I saw it as a dissection of what celebrity chefs and sous chefs really think about their customers and their work environment - it was a criticism and a sort of a venting process...
Just saw this - I know this trailer is ridiculous, but it's an amazing movie. So entertaining, original, unique, hilarious, frightening, and thought-provoking all at the same time. The performances are excellent, the writing is terrific, and there truly is no other movie that is quite like it. It's probably my favorite movie of 2022 (up there with "X") and I think virtually anyone would get at least some fun out of it.
@@rdf3701 yeah its a horror movie about people making an adult film. It has a prequel that came out a couple months ago called pearl to go with it. Both really good movies. They have a third one coming out too called maXXXine.
Having seen the movie without any trailer beforehand I gotta say I was blown away by the twists and this just gives a few away should’ve been a ‘teaser’
My friend randomly asked me to go watch this movie. I've never seen the trailer until an hour before. Would've probably never watched it out of my own choosing. But I'm glad I did. Anya was the main draw for me because of Queens Gambit. And the cast was stellar, the story so well crafted.
Nicholas hoult is so good at acting specifically in scenes where food is involved and when he shows how much he enjoys food...he did it in this movie and also in The Great...I love watching him act like he truly enjoys his food!!!
Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult and Ralph Fiennes in a Mike Mylod (director and executive producer of HBO's Succession) movie. This has every opportunity to be great 🙌🙌
I loved this movie. I still feel melancholic, some kind of pain, the pain of disapproval from people that never knew what you been through to get there, all the effort. Well made movie, from story to cinematography, actors and the balance of different emotions. It gets into you, we have to appreciate, respect and enjoy.
Just watched this movie, its incredible! I mean, they have chosen one location which is usually not ideal for feature films, but it was perfect and the pace is beautiful .. you will be entertained the whole 2 hours. Its very experimental, so not a typical story type that you would usually expect, but def worth watching. The cinematography, editing, the details and characters were just stunningly amazing.
Just watched the film..it was absolutely amazing!!! I was left with no words at the end, could not describe exactly what I was feeling which is something that not a lot of movies manage to do. Brilliant in every way possible.
We watched this last night. I didn't know what to expect...and WOW! The acting, the pacing...kept me glued to my seat for the entire movie. I literally didn't know what would happen next. I'm still thinking about it the next day.
My friends mentioned this movie tonight at dinner mockingly. I hadn’t heard of it and thought it sounded ridiculous. They described it as “A bunch of food critiques go to a restaurant and get murdered.” I compared it to the similarly ridiculous premise of 12 Feet Deep or whatever that movie was about the women being trapped in a pool for a weekend. Then I saw online that it was a satirical comedy thriller, which sounded right up my alley. I watched it without watching the trailer. That was a great move! I really enjoyed it. Obviously it’s too late for this one, but I recommend watching more movies without watching the trailer first. It was quite thrilling.
I know some people like to say the ending was too predictable but if you truly believe it was predictable I think that fits with parts of what the movie touches on, the inability for critics to ever truly be satisfied and how some people think watching makes them qualified to actually do. Maybe I'm crazy but it feels like they knew exactly what they were doing with the ending and honestly I found it beautiful.
@@pokemonmanic3595 I have so many unanswered questions about the story line lol like why was the male main character so well versed in cooking but could not cook. And why did the hostess feel like the female main character was going to take her job/position?!? The first main plot twist really caught me off guard 😂
@@loria287 Well Tyler is a parody of those people who flaunt their “knowledge” of culinary but have never worked in a kitchen and have no experience. He was all talk and no bite. The hostess has always been chef’s right hand, and the fact he accused her of not remembering an order when she has never done that led her to believe she was being replaced, plus she knew she was dying so she might’ve cracked. The ending twist is why I love this movie so much 🥰
I won't spoil anything, but this is a MUST watch. It'd be my favorite movie of 2022 if The Batman hadn't already come out in March. An easy recommendation for fans of horror AND comedy!
I'm SO GLAD I didn't see the trailer before watching the movie!! I had no idea what to expect and the experience of everything unfolding was incredible.
The script, acting, direction, & subject matter make a HUGE, HUGE metaphor of food, eating & preparing...it touches upon history & troubled lives & food it what binds them altogether & yet tears them apart. Life, "it's part of The Menu."
As a 43 year old chef I must say this movie is just amazing and Ralph Fines deserves an Oscar nod for his brilliant performance, love this film, best horror film in years only next to Smile 2022.
@@rustybucket5465 I can't gift you the sense of humour dude. Since you are offended I guess you belong in that category of customers who yells at waiters.
@@rustybucket5465 Just noticed your passion to like your own comments. Getting approval from someone else is really hard right? Well, it is not that hard to get a sense of humour. Go get one.
Seeing Nicholas hoult again after sometime since Beast!! Anya-Taylor Joy sounds amusing now with American accent again and great to not only see Ralph Fines but John Lugiuzmo too!! I hope he comes back in John Wick and fixed his car!! The menu figuring theme seems like creative idea!
Island, cooking, crazy chef, boat leaves... it's almost like as if Agatha Christie's AND THEN THERE WERE NONE and HELL'S kitchen had a love child and out came Hunger Games but for adults. Overall, I'll definitely want to see this and anything Ralph Fiennes does is good!
Yeah I thought of Hunger Games too! Like Squid Game meets Hunger Games but with affluent nicely dressed characters from the Lifetime Channel or whatever. And lemme guess...they all end up on the menu in the end! That's why the food is good. Hahaha
as weird as it sounds i actually felt for the chef, i felt bad when he explained he didn’t find joy in making food for others any more and when erin asked him to make her a cheeseburger it made him feel that joy again and i was happy for him. my mom said something to me the other day that reminded me of this movie she said that i use to love cooking, trying new recipes and discovering my own and now not so much.. i really hope i do find that love again. i love seeing the different ways people react to my cooking 😊
I might be met with a lot of negativity in the comments, but I'm still going to take the shot: You eat to live, not the other way round. Food is for survival with a blend of taste so you can also enjoy it. You don't have to go over the top with it.
This movie is something different. Was getting bored watching movies with similar plots. I loved this movie a lot. Some scenes might get a little boring but it’s never predictable. Loved it till the end. Highly recommended.
Just saw this movie and it was absolutely amazing!! I was in the edge of my seat the whole time and I love it! The story was incredible and I love how they executed it in a way it would make us all uncomfortable. After all, the truth of the story SHOULD make us uncomfortable. This movie definitely made it to my top list of the best movies I have seen. Anna Taylor-Joy never disappoints as well. She's phenomenal here!
Impeccable acting all around. Never knew Hong Chau before but she is excellent in this and brings the character to a higher level. Cooking the cheeseburger is such a great scene. The light returned for a moment
I just finished watching and WOW! that was a one heck of a movie. All of the actors were great especially Anya and the chef. I'm so mad it took me long to watch it.
This was such a brilliant film. The plot is new but well delivered, the acting and delivery is superb, the jokes are subtle but not corny. Plus the food is visually pleasant.
After some trepidation, we watched The Menu (an earlier review from our youngest was terrible). We really liked it. It's not so much about morality, but about one person's moral point of view. Dark and funny and Ralph Fiennes was excellent.
I saw this without seeing the trailer first because I saw it on a date last night and it was really good. The trailer doesn’t give it justice. Definitely a dark comedy horror kind of movie. Him and I were never bored watching it.
