Trying out a new Safety Razor today from a company in Pennsylvania and the razor is made in the USA. Here is the info from their website-
“This safety razor is Made in the USA with 100% marine grade 316 stainless steel, CNC machined for a lifetime of incredible shaves. It is made with care and precision by a small family owned machine shop in Pennsylvania.
The geometry of the razor allows for a mild pressure sensitive shave, creating a closer shave with reduced risk of cuts. The rigorously tested design has a thick ergonomically shaped handle, which is the key to providing the right pressure for the smoothest shave and more comfortable grip compared to other razors. The perfectly weighted and balanced handle and precisely placed knurling allows a secure grip for wet hands.”
Tech Specs-
* 100% Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel
* Total Height: 4 inches
* Head Length: 2 inches
* Head Width: 1 inch
* Total Weight: 3.75 ounces
* Made in the USA

I wanted to personally thank you for uploading these videos. I recently switched form a cartridge razor to a DE setup. I went with a Van Der Hagen kit from wal-mart. I noticed the factory blades that came with the kit were really "pulling" on my face when i shaved. I ordered a sample kit from amazon with some Astra superior platinum, Feather, Gillette platinum, Kai stainless, Personna platinums and wilkinson swords. I tried our the Astra's earlier tonight and WOW they were SOO much better then the Van der hagens. I can't wait to try the others.

I do like the idea of the magnet on the bottom of the handle, for the times when you drop a blade on a flat surface.

I'm glad I read this! I didn't think about that! Not sure I want to pay $80 for it, but I don't really want to buy something cheap from China that will break. I only use like 2 razors a year. I bought two Dorco kits in November 2018, broke the handle and razor last year, so I had to go get some disposable ones.

Pretty cool razor, I too have had many adventures in my 65 Mustang. We have talked about before, but I have owned mine since I was 17, 34 years. My family owned a water utility business and with a 4 speed on the floor I would read water meters it. I my dad sold the company over 20 years ago, but I still own the car. My daughter is graduating from high school this year. I told her I would give it to her when she graduates from college or technical school.

Hi, Ken! I know I’m late to the party on this video, but this razor was made in the town I live in! Not Philadelphia, but South of Pittsburgh area in a small town called Waynesburg. This is my first comment on your videos, even though I’ve seen almost every one of them. I got into DE shaving because of my acne… have been considering making videos reviewing DE razors for acne, but nervous to do so. I’m also a mail carrier, so I always laugh when you say the mailman is there! I’d sure like to be your mailman so that I could see all the cool products you receive! Please keep on keeping on!

Great shave. At a price of $90, it’s a little bit cheaper than other high end razors like the Karve, Blackland and Timeless razors that wet shavers spend hundreds of dollars on. I might be sold on it for its price and performance. I’m halfway through No Shave November, and may these last 15 days of that month pass by swiftly till I get back to wet shaving

A bit scared but not too much since it's not like a shavette/straight razor. I just have some spots and 1-2 moles which can be cut open so gotta be a bit careful. I used to be excited and hyped when new razors were introduced, but now my reaction is mostly meh. Back in the day things were much more simple. You had like 20-30 modern razors to choose from a around 10 vintage razors and that's it. Nowadays new razors and brands pop up every few months and everyone is trying to ride the new weave. I'm not saying is a bad thing, but if someone is starting right now it will be confusing as hell. Just ask around for razor recommendations and you will get 50 different answers from 50 different people.
@ivermec-tin666
@ivermec-tin666 3 года назад
Foxtrot, I always recommend the Gillette Slim Adjustable as the starter razor. They are inexpensive and plentiful. If it is in good nick, it is a really solid place to start, and it won't become redundant. IMO, it is the F150 of razors; well arguably next to the 1940's style Gillette Super Speed. But the adjustable is... adjustable. And, we all love to play with our knobs. ;-) RAD is a problem. Just say no to RAD.
@Foxtrot-jr5qu
@Foxtrot-jr5qu 3 года назад
@@ivermec-tin666 Slims are great option for a beginner, but I do like the Super Adjustable 109 a bit more, because it's more efficient. The heads are the same, but the dial configurations are not the same. I think 9 on the Slim is around 6-7 on the Super Adjustable and for those who like more efficient and aggressive shaving they are a slightly better option. The only thing I don't like is the anodised aluminum handle that might break at any time.
@ivermec-tin666
@ivermec-tin666 3 года назад
@@Foxtrot-jr5qu I agree with you in principle. But, the Super Adjustable's or slim jims as they are called are currently rather hard to come by and significantly more expensive on the auction site. The slim adjustable is more easy to acquire on a budget, had a longer production run, and is a more robust design. There is always a risk with a slim jim because of their aluminum construction, and auction sellers who don't know what the hell they have in their hands or how it is supposed to operate. I actually have my eye on a Super Adjustable 84mm, but I am not going to pay $60+ for one. It can't be that much better than a slim adjustable. A beginning DE shaver is not likely to need a higher level of aggression than the slim adjustable can provide. It takes time and practice to achieve the technique that would permit a more efficient/aggressive razor. Some, perhaps most shavers, never get there.

@@ivermec-tin666 The Super Adjustables are now more expensive than Slims? Damn, I've got mine a few years ago in a shaving kit along with some old plastic DE razor and a sealed pack of vintage DE blades for 10$ with shipping. The Super Adjustable was in ''almost'' prestine condition.

Odd... The WSC site description says "The ‘Merica Razor gives you a mild to medium shave." The Tech Specs... blade gap: 0.016" and Exposure: Neutral. Either they've changed the design or the specs are wrong if this is close to an R41 and the way it performed in this video! Looks aggressive to me.

Would anyone be kind enough to personally recommend a razor worth investing in for someone, such as myself, who has sensitive skin? I've tried the usual Gillette Pro-Glide razors and varieties of skin-guards, but I'm looking to spend some money on a good future-proof product.
@minitos1
@minitos1 3 года назад
Αnything mild really.. Depends on your budget. For something cheaper, you could go with the Weishi AKA Van Der Hagen for a twist to open or perhaps the Feather popular which I've heard good things for. When it comes to 3 piece razors there's some very cheap Gillette Tech clones online from China (aliexpress etc) or you could go spend an extra buck for a more solid well built razor like an Edwin Jager or a Muhle, the R89 is a good beginner razor from Muhle. Whichever razor you might get your hands on because at the end of the day any razor you might be able to get your hands on quick is better than no razor.. Start slow, don't rush anything and do a maximum of two passes (with the gain and across rhe grain). Against the grain might be a bit scary at first and you might get some irritation from it. Other than that, a blade sampler pack might be a good idea to find which razor blade you like. If I was to recommend a beginner razor blade you can't go wrong with the Wilkinson sword blades, definitely not the sharpest ones but they're very smooth and I had a hard time cutting myself when I first started. Good luck on your journey, I hope this wall of text ends up being useful.

Otis, On the vintage side, I would recommend a Gillette slim adjustable razor in good condition. No matter what your skin or beard type, this razor can be dialed in to suit your needs. It is made of solid stamped brass with a nickel coating. Just make sure that it is fully functional and that the plating is intact, and you are good to go after minimal cleaning and sanitizing. I started with a Gillette Tech ball end, but I would not recommend it. The slim adjustable is far more flexible and forgiving. On the modern side, I would suggest the Rockwell 6S. It is made of solid stainless steel, and has three double sided plates; so 6 levels of efficiency/aggressiveness. This, like the slim adjustable, is a lifetime razor as long as it is cared for properly. If you insist on an adjustable then I would suggest the Parker Variant. I would not consider this to be a lifetime razor because it is made of some sort of alloy. For razor blades, just get a variety pack of tucks from Maggards or some other online vendor. Everyone has a different experience with blades, or YMMV, as they say in the wet shaving community. I enjoyed Astra SP's for my first shaves. They are a nice balance of smooth and sharp at a low price point. Never had a bad experience with these blades. I would characterize my skin as average sensitivity; and my beard as tougher than average, but not extremely tough. I am of Bavarian ancestry, but as you grey the beard gets tougher. Soap? I started with a Palmolive stick, and still favor it because it is an awesome budget performer with no nonsense, and I am used to it. You would do just as well with a puck from Fine or Sterling. IMO, tallow soaps are easier to lather at a lower cost, and reliably slick; a trifecta. The fancy stuff can come later... Ariana and Evans or Barrister and Mann. Brushes? I am not the one to ask. I only use one, a Semogue Owner's Club Badger. I face lather. Most people would recommend a synthetic brush, as they don't need to be soaked, they are essentially no maintenance, mildew resistant, and they are lower cost; but someone else will have to chime in with a specific recommendation beyond the Bruce or the Big Bruce. That's really all you NEED; a razor, blades, soap, brush, and an old toothbrush to clean your hardware after use. You will not miss the cartridge razors. I don't. I could get acceptable results with a Gillette Mach 3; and I still keep one for travel... but it is always an unpleasant experience. DE shaving with proper hardware and software is actually a pleasure. Welcome to wonderland, Alice. ;-)

Oh, sorry, I forgot, get yourself some witch hazel or a post shave balm. Sterling makes outstanding balms. Your skin is going to take some time to adapt to DE shaving. One of these will help to calm the skin down as you develop your technique. Alcohol based post shaves can come later, after you get the technique down. And, an alum block provides very useful feedback as to how your shave went. It also helps to quench "weepers". The alum block never lies... So, what is that now, Razor, Blades, Soap, Brush, old toothbrush, Balm/witch hazel, and alum block; 7 items. Good luck.

#1. That razor looks like a Fat Henson DE Razor. #2. I don't think that always using familiar shave products with a new razor will necessarily always give an accurate indication of the razor on the first shave. Equally, I think executing the first shave on camera as a accurate depiction of what others especially novices, who don't know their ass from their elbow, can expect if they use the same razor is a given. It's a Logic Error in your reasoning, in my opinion, on this subject. #3. The last time I was in Philadelphia was on a layover on my way to Germany...

Ken, I thought the razor was a bit of an ugly duckling but obviously is very effective. Even for a Brit, buying American is preferable to Chinese or Russian kit. I think being an R41 devotee turns you off other razors too quickly as you just assume they won't get the job done.
