I have no idea how you kept the footage of each lipstick separate in editing. I'm sure this video was a TON of work, so I thank you, your lips & any additional support systems for this entertaining & informative video.
Exactly what I thought! How do you keep the order straight of what lipstick you swatched so that it's a tiny bit easier to put name to colour in the editing? We see the work! We see the effort! We appreciate you and Joe very much ❤
I love that your videos help us infuse decisions that could feel humdrum (choosing a lipstick) with artfulness, intentionality and self reflection. It turns makeup into a window into the soul. Thank you, Hannah! 🙂
I’m longing for brands to release plummy browns in their lip ranges. I would love this formula (or one from Lisa Eldridge, Tom Ford, etc.) in a brown that leans plum rather than brick.
I love how "Equestrian" looks on you, because it gives you the same contrast that you have ( fair skin with deep auburn hair). Yet, you have this soft/muted quality to your coloring,as this deep brown lip color has. It also has a neutrality that goes well with your olive skin. Just like in color analysis, I feel you are a Deep Autumn (aka: Soft/Deep/Warm).
definitely deep autumn! after so much trial and error (and everything turning too pink/too orange) I now only buy a lipstick that’s been swatched/worn by hannah and haven’t been subject to clown mouth for a while now 🌟
This is so interesting! I always thought of Hannah as a cool season, most likely Muted Summer (soft/medium/cool). So interesting to see differences of opinion, given the fact that neither of us have draped her :) I'm a True Summer with olive skin and I tend to only buy Hannah-tested colors too.
Yes with Baby!! It looks so fab on you. This makes me think that classic might work on me bc I’m not olive and actually have some peachy pink undertones. This is - as my students would say - ****amazeballs*** analysis. Only HLP can deliver!!!
All hail our pale queen! I'm not quite as pale but I might be even more olive and desaturated than you Hannah, because the Merit lipsticks are all SO much and orange on me. I think all of these look amazing on you! So I know they won't be for me and my preferences, but knowing how hard it is to find lippies that work for us ghosties, I'm so happy that you've found a brand that works for you! (And can't wait for the next installment of the balm series!)
It's the story, of a lovely lady! Who was trying oh so many lipsticks on. Each of them had pros and cons and claims a plenty, And that's the way we got the Poston/Merit bunch! It's not great, but there you go 😂
LOVE the swatch format of this and the Brady Bunch-esque framing of all the Hannahs comparing the reds-strangely satisfying to see someone move and groove with different lip colors in an identical frame allows for really great comparisons!
I find it a little sinic to choose French names for lipsticks that you cannot buy in France... Merit, when will we be able to buy your brand in France???
I absolutely loved this video and your previous Merit lipstick video. Now that I am actually in the market for a red lipstick, they have both been so helpful. Thank you for creating both and for sharing your commission link!
I am so impressed with Merit. They stand behind their products and customer service was incredibly responsive. I am surprised by how much I love their stick foundation. And I can’t stop, won’t stop purchasing the Great Skin!
You look amazing...I love your lashes and have adopted your application (or adapted my application to your method...lol) and I really like it. Thank you for another video! BTW, Antibes looks great on you!
I lost my Aperitif and I was absolutely gutted!!! Probably my favorite red I’ve ever worn. I’m so excited that Vermilion is very very similar, I’m 100% going to pick it up.
My favorite red lip (not that I have many, because red is pretty overpowering on me) is Kitty Belly in the Nyx Smooth Whip formula. It's a matte cream but it's the only matte I can wear for hours and it never dries me out. Also, it has this dimensional matte look without layering really dark on the lips like the Merit mattes do. I'm really curious what you would say about it, to me it's such an interesting formula.
These matte lipsticks and the eye shadows are also a foray into providing products for the mature market. As we age and lose our lip line and colour, these formulations help to delineate the lines and enliven our faces. This very thorough review was very helpful. Thank you Poston 😊
Now this is a lipstick comparison that is intelligent, intensive and actually helpful in making a decision about what shade and formula to try. I actually do not tend to prefer mattes, but I did buy the shade Sunday. It is soft and comfortable and I may add a gloss to the middle of my bottom lip because I tend to like that look. I realize this video must have taken a ton of work, so thank you guys.
Hanna I think they all look beautiful on you and makes me want to purchase all of them, the satin and matte colors and if my pocket book would allow me to i would be online purchasing all of them! However I can't afford them and was wondering if you could help find some comparable/dupes at the drugstore? Mostly interested in your favorite colors from the satin line and of the matte. Thank you for sharing these, they all look beautiful on you!!!
Vermillion was the one I had my eye on but Merit said Aperitif (I already have) was Vermillion in a matte. As of now I am not sold on matte so my next purchase will be Cabo. So far, Tiger is my favorite. Love this video. I love that you were able to feature all the shades.
Oh my goodness, your lipie reals are adorable! I swear I could listen to you talking about literally anything. Have you looked into audible book reads as a side project?
Taking advantage of being early with a video requesf: makeup to nap in. I want this to be a trend. Hannah, would you be into that? People of RU-vid, what makeup do you wear when you anticipate a nap later?
Lmao as a pregnant person who naps a lot, I think about this so much. Basically I skip base products, swap for dewy skincare. Then I do bolder lips and single shadow eyes!
Some of the colors do look very different on your lips in a good way. I only bought Antibes and it washes me out. I would have to invest in a lip pencil to use with Antibes. Very nice and thorough video of the swatches.
I got the four-pack with Maison, Antibes, Classic, and Power. I am also super pale, but with pink undertone, so I turn everything pink. So Power turned into a cherries in the snow type deal, which is fine--it's a richer, more luxe version of Colour Pop Solo, which is welcome. I will try Vermilion, because I love Apertif, and yes, Cabo still wins!
I'm using "a curl can dream" gel and a diffuser head on my blow dryer when I wash my hair once a week. But I think a lot of the volume is coming from the cut! It's a razor cut and she carved lots out of the middle so that it isn't weighed down. I also have really thick hair.
I think all of these colors look beautiful on you HLP. I do like the ones from the satin range too. What mascara are you wearing here? That’s beautiful too 😂😊
Thank you so much for doing this, you have no idea how much money you saved me. Since merit doesn’t ship to the EU, I have to get a British friend of mine to forward me products (I got two signature lips, the bronzer and the blush that way) which is always a lot of trouble. I own L’avenue and aperitif and I don’t think any of the new colours would be for me or are better in undertone than the ones I own.
Thank you for this video! I’ve been trying to figure out if that equestrian shade would work for Cool toned folks? it helps to know it’s not warm by being orange leaning. although it’s a beautiful color, I think I might skip it because it still sounds like it’s quite warm.
I love the original merit lipsticks. All the matte shades did look great on you. Hope they expend the shade collection to have something closer to baby and 1990 in the range.
I love your videos, Hannah. I have a little problem though - most of these colours are reading as variations of brown on my monitor and I don't know why. I've checked the monitor's light temperature settings and it doesn't make much difference. Other viewers seem to be seeing the colours better than I do. I wonder if the lipsticks all have a grey element which for me, makes them all look brownish. That's including Sunday that you're saying is definitely pink. It looks like a brownish rose to me on both my laptop and ipad.
is there an amber night-shift on your screens? On a lot of devices it's automatic and starts as soon as the sun goes down, which can be pretty early depending on where you are. Maybe a different issue, but this definitely happens on my computer and phone (colors don't look true after sundown)
I am also very pale but I’m about as close to neutral as human pigmentation can get. One of the areas this ends up causing crushing disappointment is lipstick. For whatever reason, brands seem to quadruple down on the saturation of the undertone in their lipsticks and on someone like me, it ends up being like a megaphone screaming out, “HEY!! I AM ORANGE!!’ Or “HELLLOOO THERE! I AM MAGENTA!!!”. Whilst we have different things we want to get from our lipsticks and our undertones are different, you having been on this journey as a pale olive who is likewise very sensitive to the undertones has been very illuminating for me. Most makeup influencers out there are either obviously pink or yellow under toned and it feels like lipstick is just this effortless after thought lol. I feel like I have some direction now whereas before I was blindly buying tubes on a wing and a prayer. It seems like the rarest of rarities in the makeup world is a lipstick with a neutral base. I know now to look for something with a grey/brown undertone to it. It’s been a bit of a miracle that they have finally realized neutral foundation does not mean just paler pink or paler yellow. Maybe we’ll eventually get the same breakthrough with lipstick. Until then, I guess I’ll just keep mixing three or four different ones like a mad scientist 😂
Towards the end, discussing formula and the effect it had when overlining the lips, it got me thinking.. what if one from each merit line was used and ombréd together. The original satin as the "liner" and the new shiny matte towards the center (more as a topper). Can anybody else picture my vision with success or is it too out there??
It's a shame that Merit was such a dick toward MUA Wayne Goss; otherwise, I'd be interested in purchasing from them when I run out of lipstick. I'll NEVER order from them now. That being said, love your video.
I’m intrigue by this brand of lipsticks and I want a new lipstick(s), but I want the power stay of matte with the softness of satin. I’m also 59yrs and finding matte lipsticks age me, so I’ve been trying balmy type of lipstick and after wearing lipsticks since I was 13, finding myself with bare lips at time, cuz I’m not wearing what I want.
I too love the original Lipstick range. The colors are so much more my thing too, much more nuanced. While I am not as pale as you I have a similar neutral olive undertone. I have already seen several reviews of this new lipstick and I was actually really underwhelmed and disappointed by the colors immediately. Every single one of these is going to go too pink or too orange on me, neither of which I like. I am sad that there wasn’t a neutral or grungy color to be found and I won’t be buying any of them. So I guess at least I’ll be saving some money.
I think you are warm toned, which is why berries don't work well. Cool toned olives look great in berries though! And honestly, you get away with berries just fine:)
As far as I'm concerned, this is the gold standard for product review! The side-by-side comparisons are so helpful, but it's even more than that... It's the obvious consideration you have put in to the nuances which you then communicate with such clarity. I just went into Sephora the other day to swatch the new mattes, and seeing this video now has convinced me I don't need to buy any, but I'm over here just appreciating beautiful makeup for beautiful makeup's sake.
Keep Classic and Court in your kit. I don't usually go for bright lips, either. When I do, the color has to be exact. Those two colors are that on you. They light up your face but don't overshadow it -- your whole face is in focus, not just your lips. Thanks for trying all these on!
@@cathb4682 ah bon! I lived in Nice for a year during college and loved my experience. I have been back to France many times and have a special place in my heart for French people and language. Hannah normally does so well with pronunciation but this one just stuck out to me.
Ok Ms Hannah! You don’t give your lovely complexion enough credit! You looked good in almost all of the mattes!! My fav on you were: Antibes, Equestrian, Vermilion and Power ( Sunday was the only one, where I went ehh ) loved the mattes on you the most actually! I will say, it did feel as if all their mattes are sooo close in color, it didn’t feel like there was any true pinks for example ? Which was odd…overall loved them though!
I was musing to myself about why we sometimes prefer colors that maybe aren’t on trend or why some color might feel dated on one person but fresh on another. I think it has to do with individual coloring. I get why you prefer the warmer toned versions. It is in keeping with your personal coloring, skin, hair and eyes. Your hair and skin are both muted and while a mix of color, both lean to the yellow side of the spectrum more than the blue. Right now, modern feeling is being in keeping with your coloring rather than trending, I think. I am a medium skin tone and both my hair and skin lean cool (very dark with red highlights not yellow and cool olive leaning more blue). It being winter and me being paler, I almost give off walking dead vibes with the silvery gray green undertone I have going on😂. I love me a deep berry, which somehow looks modern and like me, rather than vampy. Anything with even the slightest bit of orange goes neon on me while pink, mauve and berry look normal as long as there is gray mixed in.
i am a pale, desaturated olive. having 3 of the satins myself (because of you) makes this video *even more* helpful. based on how you wear tiger though, i know i'm not as pale as you but definitely more olive or desaturated. tiger almost presents itself as a proper red on me. heavily considering equestrian...
So helpful! I’m a red head with the pale skin problem of color looking garish on me but I have pink skin and blue eyes so I gravitate to the opposite Merit colors like the blue pinks and reds. Thank you for helping me figure that out!
Also! Thank you for noting that Vermillion is actually more down the middle than warm because I was leaning towards Vermillion initially for my red but I thought the photos made it look like that too. Now I’m going with Court because have Antibes and it’s my favorite lipstick formula ever.
