The Merkur 39c Slant Bar Razor 😃

I made a couple of errors in this video, after getting myself properly mixed up; to clarify, the Merkur 39c slant bar razor is the long handled version of the Merkur 37c slant bar razor and measures between 100mm and 101mm. The Merkur 38c is the long handled version of the Merkur 34c. Sorry about that.
I found this razor gave a comfortable shave and for the first time, enjoyed the longer handle. There was a little blade feel, particularly on the first pass but it was a comfortable shave throughout three passes. I found it to be a very efficient razor and again, I've exercised the option to give it an extra mark for efficiency. I had a bbs shave with some minor post shave discomfort after Monday's shave which I improved upon after Wednesday's shave.
Monday's shave: Wednesday's shave:
blade feel 0 (1) 2 3 4 blade feel 0 (1) 2 3 4
comfort 0 1 2 3 (4) comfort 0 1 2 3 (4)
efficiency 0 1 2 3 (4 5) efficiency 0 1 2 3 (4 5)
soreness 0 1 (2) 3 4 soreness 0 (1) 2 3 4
(post shave)
Alum Block
Tarmac Cowboy pointed out that in the Marvel razor video, I mention buying my alum block from Connought Shaving for £3.90. Conny also bought one from them and confirms that it is a very clear bar.

Nicely done Mark! I find this razor to be an efficient and comfortable tool especially when paired with a sharp blade. 2 pass with pick ups gets me BBS with consistent ease. I’m definitely in the market for an Alum block that is so translucent as yours. All the best. I so enjoyed your series on Slant Razors.

Hi Zac. It was a great shave with this razor. I understand now why so many people like it. From the comments my alum came from Connought shaving, although they are out of stock at the moment but Edwin Jagger also sell a clear block. Big price difference! I'm glad you enjoyed the series 😃 I hope there will be more razors to add, along the way. I have loved doing this series.

I know the main focus of the video was the slant razor but you got me thinking about shaving stick type soaps. I have only tried the Palmolive stick. Mainly because it was easily available (at the time). I realize it has been withdrawn from the UK market so wondered how other shaving sticks perform. Maybe an idea for a video? Another question is what do you do with that last bit of the shaving stick? You know, when it gets so small and slippery to hold. Throw it away or put the remains in a shaving bowl? The miser in me says don't waste the last bit of the stick. I have always liked your new Alum block. It looks like a piece of ice. So nice and clear. Mine is completely different, very cloudy. At least it does the job. Thanks again for an interesting video. Cheers.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 5 лет назад
Hi David. I put the last bit of soap from a stick into my shaving bowl. Waste not want not. I think all the well known shaving sticks that you can buy perform really very well for the very small cost of buying them. Arko and Derby are both lemon scented and the others seem to have a quite similar sort of scent. Very nice but quite mild. The Palmolive in terms of slickness was certainly by far the best.

Congratulations on the Friendship Shaving brush, Mark! Also good to see the PAA Cube in action. It's a great lather booster and also, as your hands proved today, a slickness enhancer. Your alum block is, I believe, an Edwin Jagger, which runs around $12 in the US. I talked myself out of getting one because of the price, but I admit it's impressive. A good tip from Douglas of PAA is to put a thick rubber band around one end of an alum block to give you a good grip. If I had an E.J. block, I'd do it just to make it visible. Cheers!

Apparently, I got mine from Connaught shaving 🙂 It was pointed out to me earlier, for £3.90 but it's good to know EJ also make a clear block too. Thanks for that, I will pass it along.👍 I'm excited about the brush, I must admit.

One thing I forgot to add about the 39c is that it enhances blades you might not like in a straight version. If you have some unloved blades that have been lurking at the back of the cupboard give them a try in a slant if you have one.

Nice shave and review my friend. Very effective razor indeed. You got it a bit wrong there. The Merkur 37c is the name for the slant bar with short handle. The 38c is the same head as the 34c but with long handle. It's kind of confusing with all this numbers for naming different razor's 😎 My 37c always give me close, smooth and efficient shaves👌 Wish you a great and sunny weekend🌞

Hello Mark, I have been using the Merkur 39C, the Ikon X3, the Ikon B1and the Maggard slant, but I have to say that the Parker Semi-Slant, for me, it is the best of the lot. Very smooth with a Feather, and even smoother with a Gillette Silver Blue, and at the same time quite effective. On top of it, it can be had for a song. Flying under the radar, but a very, very nice razor. Regards, Roberto

@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 5 лет назад
Hello Rajan, it's nice yo receive a comment from you. I'll bet the 37c is a great razor, I wonder if the weight in the handle of the 39c affects the shave and makes it a little different from it's short handled version. Maybe not. Those Yaqi razors look very good, especially as they are inexpensive. The doc looks very nice.

Smooth going in this one. On a related note: I do not rinse off alum..I find the only consequence is that the skin is less shiny otherwise the completed shave is the same and in any case, alum is a antiseptic and astringent. If one does not rinse off witch hazel which is also a antiseptic/astringent why fuss over alum? This is just my take on the subject... ;-)
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 5 лет назад
Hi Keith, I hope you're well. I thought that alum caused the skin to be over dry if left on the skin but, as with everything, I guess that depends on you're skin type. Good point about the witch hazel, although that stuff gives me spots for some reason. Weird! I must admit, my face post shave is sometimes quite shiny.

Hej Mark, yes the Merkur's can be little confusing modelnumber wise. Years ago I owned the sledgehammer, but simply cud not get along, traded it. Vry recently found my HOFFRITZ/POMCO slant, vintage n its based on the Merkur slant. Imo a ttly different razor, vry comfortable n silver plated, great shine. If y hv the chance to try the vintage, pls do so, a surprise. Palmolive sticks y easily can find in Germany n they say there is no stop of production, at least for the time being. Cheers fm the lion city, Achim+

Yes, I messed that up, a bit! Great news about Palmolive in Germany; lucky fellows. I must try the Hoffritz sometime. Thanks for the information, it's very interesting. I wonder if a genuine vintage Merkur also gives a slightly different shave.
@achimkohlhage1328
@achimkohlhage1328 5 лет назад
Imo the HOFFRITZ/POMCO does just that, it makes me so convinced. Though my negative Merkur experience was 2-3yrs ago, it might well be improved experience etc changed my results. Nevertheless, taken the decision straights only with barber. No SE, just DE n amongst these, the Slants be a minority of 1 or 2. Still so mny DE's to test, find, wow thought retirement was retireing… Y hv a peaceful weekend, my friend.

Excellent review. I do wonder if a heavier (but well-balanced) handle improves the shave.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 5 лет назад
I think 'well balanced' is certainly the key, going by this shave. A lot of the heavier handles I've tried seem to feel like they've just got a heavy handle, if that makes sense. So, the weight feels as if it all in the base if the handle. I don't think the heavier handle improves the shave per se, there are so many other variables to consider but in this case it was great and I found it very comfortable.

I've a fairly large collection of safety razors varying from "dangerous" to excellent modern types. Of the lot my 39c is the favourite I find it superior to the Ikon slants.
