André Rieu from the Point Theatre, Dublin, Ireland. Music to melt the heart.
The Merry Widow (German: Die lustige Witwe) is an operetta by the Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. The librettists, Viktor Léon and Leo Stein, based the story - concerning a rich widow, Hanna Glawari, and her attempt to find a husband-on an 1861 comedy play, L'attaché d'ambassade (The Embassy Attaché) by Henri Meilhac.
The operetta was first performed at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna on 30 December 1905 with Mizzi Günther as Hanna, Louis Treumann as Danilo, Siegmund Natzler as Baron Zeta and Annie Wünsch as Valencienne. It was Lehár's first major success, becoming internationally the best-known operetta of its era. Lehár subsequently made changes for productions in London and Berlin but the version heard today is essentially that of the original production. Well-known music from the score includes the "Vilja Song", "Da geh' ich zu Maxim" ("You'll Find Me at Maxim's"), and the "Merry Widow Waltz".
The operetta toured Austria and in 1906 enjoyed productions in Hamburg's Neues Operetten-Theater, Berlin's Berliner Theater (starring Gustav Matzner as Danilo and Marie Ottmann as Hanna, who made the first complete recording in 1907), and Budapest's Magyar Szinhaz. Many translations and international productions, as well as Austrian revivals followed, as did sequels, spoofs and film versions.
In its English adaptation by Basil Hood, with lyrics by Adrian Ross, the operetta became a sensation in London, beginning in June 1907, starring Lily Elsie and Joseph Coyne and featuring Robert Evett and Gabrielle Ray, with costumes by Lucile. It ran for 778 performances in London and toured extensively in Great Britain. The English version opened in October 1907 on Broadway for another very successful run of 416 performances and played in Australia in 1908. Thereafter, it was played frequently in America and throughout the English-speaking world, and is still frequently revived in English.

Lehár Ferenc was born in Hungary, he is a Hungarian national composer. The state in which he lived was the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Peace.

Oooh, yes! Because of these RU-vid snippets, I've already bought the Dublin and Tuscany concerts on DVD and will buy the lot as I can. Andre is fantastic! And isn't it just the best dressed orchestra around?! ;) And, yep, I think the Dublin audience is my favorite, although all the audiences have a load of fun at his concerts.

Yes, so if I would compose a music in English language, I should be an English-Hungarian composer...?! :) Well, let's enjoy all of the nice musics, because these are composed for everyone in the world

@Buli451 You are correct. "Ther Merry Widow" was, indeed, Hitler's favorite entertinment. Lehár's wife, Sophie was Jewish (converted to Catholisism) and Hitler ordered that she be declared "Ehrenarierin" - an honorary Aryan! Not so some of Lehár's Jewish librettists, who were sent to the death camps. Who says that this so-called "light" music doesn't have profound effects - like the power of life and death?

@barenbuam Well, that world had a feeling of course, but I absolutely do not think the Austro-Hungarian world was better. You know, Austria has exploited Hungary, we could not improve our industry, economy, etc. The official language was the German, so the Education was demaged too. Anyway we lost a lot. But the century XIX had a nice feeling what also is shown in the operets... I like it.

Dear "clarebannerman", Why do you call Lehár Ferenc as Austro-Hungarian composer? He was absolutly Hungarian, but -regrettably- he lived in Austo-Hungarian Monarchia. Thanks, Zoltan

@demirham Well, I'm sorry that neither of us can change history, but it's true. So, we both love the same music as Hitler? What does that have to do with politics? We can't stop Hitler from having enjoyed "The Merry Widow" any more than the Germans can watch "The Longest Day" and expect a different ending. Did Heifetz deserve to get attacked with a crowbar in Israel in 1953 when he programmed the Richard Strauss sonata? Are we supposed to hate any music that some Nazi liked?
