I think the thing that a lot of people tend to misunderstand about Shakespeare is why he's actually held so highly. It's not because of his stories. Because like damn near everything else in the world, it's highly derivative. But that's not why he's held on such a high pedestal. It's his use of language. He was a wordsmith, not a storyteller, and much of his work tends to loose a bit of lustre when experiences purely through text.

During several of my English courses at my university, it was often brought up that most of Shakespeare's plays are based on earlier stories. In fact, there is a point in Shakespeare's life where he went missing, and many people actually believe that during that time he went on a long journey across Europe and surrounding areas in order to find stories to adapt into plays.

What's crazy is that both the masterpieces are inspired from a Persian poem Laila Majnu It was written in the 9th century. However, this story was already popular in the Arabic culture by the 5th century. But, since it was the Persian poet who made the story popular, the credit goes to the poet.
@judekanawati7467
@judekanawati7467 4 года назад
Actually, the very original story of was inspired by the real lovers Qays Bin Al-Mulawwah, and Layla Al-Amereeyyah. Those two were madly in love since childhood, raising sheep together and playing together. Their families were actually related, as Qays and Layla were first cousins. The story mentions that Qays tried to propose to Layla for marriage, but her family rejected him as they believe expressing love publicly was considered highly shameful! Thus, she eventually was forced to marry another guy from another tribe, and Qays was left with his own demise missing Layla and asking about her every single day. Eventually, he was found dead by some people and his body was taken back to his family to be buried. There’s a lot more into the poet’s life, but unfortunately the sources are only mentioned in Arabic. Cheers!

The entire first semester except the last month we had to read the entire works of Arestotle which hurt our brains like crazy. You're not alone, Jon Solo, I too feel the same way about reading Shakespeare works. I think even J.R.R. Tolkien felt somewhat the same towards Macbeth. As a schoolkid he thought to himself: "Why couldn't Shakespeare have had the forest that moved be an actual forest that moved?" and that later gave rise to Ents and Hurons in his works on Middle-earth.

Glad to see you are back and in good form. Another enjoyable video. One thing about you're comments about Shakespeare, he wrote his plays in the 'common language' of the day, the theatre fans were not the 'culture' hawks as we often find today, they were just ordinary people from all classes and walks of life, also a lot of the words that don't appear to rhyme actually did back then as they sounded different in the dialect at the time. I am also told there was a lot of puns and jokes which go right over our heads now as the context is just unknown to us.

We were given an altered version of Romio and Juliet to read. It had modernized language and terms (so you could actualy understand the charecters!), but they also made it instantly dated by having it take place in a "shopping mall". I type it like that because they were very explicit that it was a "shopping mall" to try and make students care. We didn't.

That sounds like the cartoon Yo! Yogi, where Yogi Bear and his friends were moved from Jellystone Park and now were teens hanging out in Jellystone Mall. Everyone thought it was a stupid idea back then, too, except for the people that made the show. Kids weren't obsessed with malls, it was just a place they would sometimes hang out, when they weren't at somebody's house, at the movies, etc..

“Use real words, or at least make them rhyme”? Sounds like somebody needs to read “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
@Macallion
@Macallion 5 лет назад
A lot more of his work did rhyme at the time. Pronunciation of a lot of words changed over time. Also, he did invent words and phrases, but we still use a lot of them today. :)

All very true. Someone saying they don’t appreciate what Shakespeare did for the English language hasn’t been paying attention.

Plus, I think it needs to be brought up that they were originally designed to be spoken. There's a huge difference between reading Shakespeare and watching Shakespeare.

Absolutely. Plays are meant to be seen, though sometimes you still need footnotes.

One of the oldest stories to follow, or rather set the forbidden love and tragedy archetypes is Ovid's Pyramus and Thisbe, which was part of a book full of Ovid's stories written way back in 8 AD. It's very simplified yet different. There's only three characters, Pyramus, Thisbe, and funnily enough... a lion. The lovers don't even physically see each other. They talked through a crack in a wall that separated their houses, likely due to grudges between their families. They plan to meet beside the local mulberry tree, Thisbe describes the cloak she'll be wearing, but when she waits for Pyramus, she sees an oncoming lion and bolts, dropping her cloak in the process. The lion, whose mouth is dripping blood from a previous kill, finds the cloak and starts chewing and ripping it just as Pyramus approaches. He hastily assumes the lion killed his lover, convinced by her bloody cloak without a body, and kills himself beneath the mulberry tree, apparently turning its then white leaves red with his blood. Thisbe returns and finds his body, and also dyes the tree red with her blood.
