John Sellars, the company’s Assistant General Manager, Production, discusses the use of the Met’s stage lifts in “Aida” with host Isabel Leonard during the October 6 Live in HD transmission. 2018-19 season.
We’ve seen that monumental beautiful Aida four times and never get tired of it. It’s a treat to see the elevators at works. And other productions that make use of all those elevators.
When you see it change in the house it is very impressive. The best one I saw was the old Zeffirelli La Traviata, when in the last act she starts of in bed then at the end the lifts move the bed up and she runs down the stairs to die in Alfredo's arms, who's on the stage below. It was fantastic, especially with a singer like Gheorghiu doing it.
