Now, I know that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a bogus institution, but if ever a band deserves to be in it, The Meters do. Thumbs up if you think so too. If jazz and blues originated in Congo Square, then funk was born in Treme. God bless the Meters!!!
Absolutely criminally underrated in the wider scope of music history. The Meters are the true funk masters. If someone is talking music and they bring up the Meters, I’d instantly respect them. Never has happened though...
Dude, I play a little guitar and whenever I want to feel cool I try and copy the Meters. Not steal, just really get nasty on Meter-like riffs. I wish I could prove it to ya, but my phone is FULL of me making funk riffs on my looper.
Could not agree more! I'll do a back flip if somebody mentions The Meters to me. Saw their 35th reunion show at JazzFest. Will always love and respect them!!
RIP Russell Batiste. Second best drummer from Nola after Zigaboo imho. Thank you for posting this. My first time in Nola was a few years after this and I've been hooked ever since. Just saw George last week here at Brooklyn bowl for somewhere around my 120th time. So cool seeing him here when he was relatively younger. So wish Art was still with us too. May he RIP
This is their ten year re-union at 1990 Jazz Fest on Congo Square stage- I was there and have a few photos from the set. Russell Batiste Jr. on drums and not Zigaboo. In Knocking On Heaven's Door that is Jimmy Buffet who also played helping out on vocals. Also on that stage was Little Feat (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pWrEGXy6ym0.html) and Gregory D & J'Ro'J with Manny Fresh and a dance troupe from Senegal. Thanks for the memories.
That sounds right. By 92 they were playing as the Funky Meters with Russel Batiste and Brian Stoltz, no Leo or Ziggy. I guess that is Russel in this one.
@@joshuamartianactually I believe Brian Stoltz joined in early 1995. Leo was still playing with them in November 1994. And Leo was doing “solo” shows in spring of 1995.
I think this is the first version of the Funky Meters with Russell Batiste replacing Zigaboo Modeliste. Not sure how long this lasted. Fairly quickly Leo quit and they replaced him with Brian Stoltz. That configuration played for many years. Not to slight Russell, but he’s not Zig. There’s something that happens when he’s there that’s different and to my ears better with Zig there. Thanks for posting this though. Still one of my favorite bands.
Batiste got some modern chops and would work on some funky-ass King Crimson type shit, but Zig just fuckin grooved like nobody else- syncopation station.
You could never beat the original. Zigaboo is easily in the top 3 best funk drummers ever. But I gotta say that Russell did an amazing job with the energy he brought to The Funky Meters
The meters are the best to ever do it PERIOD !!!!! I’m from and live in New Orleans have seen the Meters hundreds of times always better with the originals all together Rest In Peace ✌️ ART !Nevile aka papa Funk !!!!!
ah, was looking for this. Thank you. First thought it was a fender tele thinline, then noticed the body looked bigger and shaped more like a 335, but the head stock didn't;t match. Anyway, thanks.
@@emergencyexit1120 You're right, this is definitely a starcaster (this has been reissued by Fender a few years ago and it's still manufactured by Squier, as far as I know. Unfortunately, both versions, Fender or Squier do not feature the original pickups). Funny also to See George Porter Jr. playing a G&L and not his legendary Precision.
Meters - Africa.........if their was no 'The Meters' there would be no 'RHCP'.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WYU7kZlArx4.html 2 of the best bands in the world going at it
Such a pitty, that there is no good recorded/produced live album of The Meters (that I am aware of). They are live hot as hell. "Uptown Rulers" has excellent played tracks, but the sound is horrible (in my opinion)
