I'm from Sweden just to make you understand it from how it's teached over here in Europe. Hecta isn't really used much in normal everyday calculations. 1. Meter Liter Kilo 2. Decimeter Deciliter Hecto 3. Centimeter Centiliter Grams 4 Millimeter Milliliter Milligrams That's what's mostly used, and when you go to square meter or cubic meter, it's the same for Liters etc... (Kilometers = 1000 meters)
Good video with clear instructions, but unfortunately has some errors. 1) What is shown is not the metric system. It is however a system of unit prefixes, consisting of both divisors and multiples, used within the metric system. The metric system is a system of seven base units that are mathematically connected to each other. The seven base units are also mathematically connected to 22 derived units. 29 units in total. 2) Why is the meter, gram, and liter, referred to as base units. Within the prefix structure they are not base units. They are units only. The term "base unit" is reserved for the seven base units of the metric system.There is one unit only, for length/distance, the meter. One unit only for mass, the gram. One unit only for volume, the liter. 3) The prefixes are not smaller or larger units. They are divisors or multiples of the unit. The prefixes are important because they often remove the decimal point and therefore minimize errors.
This is correct and a good explanation, but we really don't use deci, hecta etc. we use ml , m, cm, km, kg. we call a can of soda 375ml and go on a 5 km run for example. I think this video makes the metric system unnecessarily confusing.
Math and science were my favorite subject but ironically the metric system always seemed weird to me. UNTIL NOW...King Henry died unexpectedly drinking chocolate milk made me laugh at myself...mind u 🤣 I got them answers right by guessing
You do know that the liter is superfluous if you already have the meter, right? This is why it is NOT a part of the metric system. However a cubic meter (m^3) is because it is merely a meter times a meter times a meter. This unit is by the way 1000 liters. And the very use of liters as a basic unit is a source of endless frustration from physicists towards chemist. Physicist are the masters of units. On any given day I do calculations on maybe 50 different units and we (by the way) have also figured out how to make unit systems (like the planck units) which requires the least amount of units and also makes multiplication by natural constants like the speed of light trivial (c=1 in planck units without any unit). Which is why we cringe when chemist use the completely ludicrous unit of a liter because it undermines the whole purpose of the SI unit system. The beauty of the SI unit system is that there is only one unit corresponding to each dimension (what you want to measure). And that the scaling of the units is based on powers of 10. However in science we don't really use it all to often. We would write nanometers as 10^(-9) m. However liters are not particularly pleasent to convert to m^3 and especially not if you have a lot of numbers in liters and you need to convert them to m^3 in order to get sensible units out the other end of your calculations. And furthermore factors of 10 are routinely forgotten when you do a lot of calculations and when they are implicitly hidden this way it becomes very stressful very fast.
