I was in Budapest around fifteen years ago and I was impressed with their entire network, trams included. Line 1 is a gem - well worth its heritage status.
I love the Budapest Metro and by extension the Budapest transport network, as I ride it and use it to get around whenever I am in the country to visit family. However, it has to be said that the city isn’t doing enough to extend the network. There a plans to extend all the lines however there isn’t anything concrete. I think this is especially a missed opportunity for M4 as it could likely double its ridership with said extension. The proposed extensions at either end would bring it northeast to at least Bosnyák tér and southwest to Budaörs. M3 also has been planned and should in my opinion be extended to the international airport however, as you can guess no real plans have come to fruition. The current plan that I’ve seen floating around is a new national rail line with a tunnel and station at the terminal connecting the airport with the rest of the country but I think a metro connection would also benefit it.
