PLEASE WATCH IN "HIGH QUALITY!" My animated film based on J R R Tolkien's poem "The Mewlips", with music and song by Colin Rudd. The Mewlips are nasty creatures that hobbit parents scare their children with, so the kids don't wander off with foolish ideas of adventure. This is a fan film. It is in no way endorsed or approved by the Tolkien Estate or any affiliates. It is a work of love and admiration and will never be used to earn any profits.

this never gets old. After discovering it in 2012, I still come back to it every now and then. There's something hypnotic about it

Maybe it's simply that Tolkien's poem is so delightfully creepy? :)

gollum fits the description of mewlips very well perhaps he's the inspiration for them! xD for an in universe explanation if not a different species entirely i think its the stoor hobbits vague recollection of goblins mirkwood & dol guldor!

Thank you! I hope you like Colin's music just as much. The Mewlips is one of my favourite Tolkien poems. Others are The Oliphaunt, Song of the Ents and the Walking Song. I will try to make animated shorts of most of them. I'm working on puppets for Song of the Ents right now (with more music from Colin)and The Oliphaunt (which will be read by a friend of mine). So, hopefully you'll like them just as much :D

@@colinjohnrudd You're absolutely right -Enough time has gone by, and I should get going with more adaptations from your music. The Tolkien Estate will probably come kicking down my door, but I'll put up a huge disclaimer, and we'll see how it goes. I listen to your Tolkien songs often and always think about the ideas I have for videos.

This is very well made. Great job! BTW, I have written a Silmarillion fanfic called "The Servants of Ungoliant", which is mostly set in the mysterious "Dark Land" continent South of Middle-earth (not Mordor, but the Dark Land featured in early maps of Arda). In my story, I depict the material featured in the original poem as being a part of said continent, instead of Middle-earth. I haven't placed said material in the plot yet, but I DO plan to fit it all in somewhere. You should check it out!

Thank you! I was planning to do more Tolken poems, using Colin's songs, but now I'm hesitant. Partly because the Tolkien estate is toughening up their copyright control, and partly because most Tilken fans just don't seem to care. And they're the intended audience!

Hello, I'm currently writing a LOTR fan fiction and plan to have a section which discuses orcs, trolls, troll men etc. In the section it is discovered that the half men were created from humans in much the same way as orcs. One of the characters will ask if sauron tried the same process with Dwarves and/or Hobbits. I plan to have the Mewlips as Sauron's attempts with one/both of these races. Do you mind if my description of them is what you have animated? They just fit the idea of failed orcs.

@locostbamboo Thanks! Yes, it's all bluescreen, except for the part when the Mewlips sit counting their gold in the dungeon. That's a miniature set. I did motion blur on all of the puppets. It sort of helps hide the fact that I'm not the most accomplished animator in the world :)

No, I won't mind. If you simple do a google image search of "mewlips", you will most likely find photos of my mewlips in their dungeon, if your fanfiction needs any illustrating.

The Mewlips have always been my favorite Tolkien poem. I think this animation is fabulous! I am very impressed with your vision of the Mewlips. I love the ruins they live in, and the trees are magnificent. The foolish man or hobbit should have stayed in Mirkwood or lake town, rather than venture into the marshes . . . for when you find the Mewlips, the Mewlips feed. Wonderful!!

@Spillage66 Thank you! Actually, almost all of the backgrounds are Photoshop collages of textures and photos. The puppets are then keyed into the backgrounds with Keylight chroma key software. The crypt where the Mewlips sit and count their gold is a miniature set. I make almost all of my backgrounds this way, simply because I don't have the space to store miniatures.

I think (if I remember right) Tolkien meant the Mewlips of the poem as a garbled account of Goblins (as Bilbo called them) or Orks (as Frodo called them). I like the video. The music especially fits with Tolkien's world I think. The idea of creating a boogy man to help keep children safe has been done in the real world too. Jenny Greenteeth is one such. She (according to legend) lived in bodies of water and would drag children in and drown them if they got too close to her watery home. A necessary tale in a time when few people knew how to swim.
@TheLoneAnimator
@TheLoneAnimator 8 лет назад
The Mewlips are Hobbit boogey men, used in tales to deter young Hobbits from going out on adventures. I've also read somewhere that they're really supposed to be Orcs or goblins, though as the Hobbits percieve them through tales that have trickled down to the Shire.
@RantingThespian
@RantingThespian 8 лет назад
From the research I have done (since this is my favorite Tolkien poem) is that they are most likely more akin to Barrow Wrights than Orcs or Goblins. Also, if you follow all the hints in the poem, look where the Hobbits had traveled many years before they arrived in the Shire, there are 2 logical places that the Mewlips would actually be located. Both are to the very east of Mirkwood. One is a marshy-area right on the eastern side of the old forest road, and the other being the Long Marshes. In fact, in the History Of the Hobbit books (Part 1: Mr. Baggins) it goes into details about some early lines where there were talks of disappearances of men, rafts, and beasts in the Long Marshes, and it seemed like Tolkien contemplated Bilbo and company entering those Marshes at one point. It then goes into detail about how it might have been the Mewlips that they were going to run into . . . but he then changed course and the Bilbo and company never encountered the evil that was residing in those marshes.

The Mewlips are probably a folk memory of either swamp goblins or barrow wights since the undead jealously guard their burial treasure the creatures could also be a separate species inhabiting remote marshlands which shrouded them from major attention. The fact that most travelers and beasts that enter the marshes never return, would make everyone avoid the region although brave adventurers clad in armor and sporting heavy weapons caught brief glimpses of the mysterious creatures lurking in the background yet the monsters had no stomach for battle and retreated when someone brandished a sword or was obnoxious like Tourette’s Guy

As I understand it, "Mewlips" is what the Hobbits call these creatures. Something's out there in the dark swamps.

A really wonderful work, which definitely must be remembered among Tolkien adaptations. :) By the way, I heard the version that this poem was inspired by Dunsany's short story "The Hoard of Gibbelins". Hasn't the animation some inspiration from it as well, as the figure of treasure-hunter is more resembling to Dunsany than Tolkien?
@TheLoneAnimator
@TheLoneAnimator 6 лет назад
Glad you enjoyed this; thanks :) The Mewlips and The Hoard of the Gibbelins have the same basic theme. I didn't lift any inspiration from Dunsany's tale, but simply thought that including a hapless human thief / adventurer would make it more personal.

I've been trying to find this forever!!! I remember being awestruck at the shadowy compositions of these shots, I was under the impression it was a bumper from some british tv programming from back in the 70s or something! Am I noticing some filk alla The RankinBass Hobbit soundtrack? Really cool take on a really cool subject. Its such a shame its so hard to find any of tolkein's lesser known and more obscure creatures. You always read about dark places where fell things dwell, but we never got much info about them. IMO it leaves Middle Earth feeling more empty than it should for such a huge place!

This film is the result of my first finding the poem, and then finding Colin Rudd's wonderful song based off of it. I kind of had to do something with it. I can see the similarity to the Rankin / Bass Hobbit songs. They also have that folksy feel.
