The Mexican Town That Kicked Out Politicians And Started Over (HBO)

Cherán is a town of some 20,000 inhabitants in the highlands of Michoacán, one of the Mexican states that’s suffered most in the drug wars of the last decade.
Armed men and women - not police, but members of an autonomous militia - guard every entrance to the town, looking for strangers with contraband.
At the height of election season in Mexico, contraband means mostly political campaign ads: Guards confiscated thousands of banners and posters, from every major political party in Mexico, in just a few weeks. These ads, along with the political parties that produce them, are completely banned in Cherán, and have been since 2011, when residents overthrew their local government and started over.
The town had been terrorized for years by an organized crime syndicate devoted to illegally logging the surrounding forests. After mobs drove out the criminals, they disarmed and drove out the corrupt cops who had protected them. Then they banned the politicians and the parties that put them in power.
In their place, the people of Cherán developed an autonomous system of self-rule based on horizontal, direct-democratic assemblies.
And while it remains economically dependent on the existing government, Cherán has achieved something unthinkable in Michoacán: Reducing the rate of murders and other serious crimes to close to zero.
For many in Mexico, especially in an election year marred by wanton political murders, Cherán stands as proof that, in the country’s entrenched cycle of violence, the key ingredient is the state: Remove that ingredient, and it’s possible to start from scratch.

"Collusion"?? Govt. and their henchmen ARE organized crime! It is criminal to use violence against non-violent people. Is it violence to speak? Or is it your right to speak your mind, verbally and in writing or art? The new democratic militia is destroying a form of speech, the political banners. Banners don't create politics, people do. If the people repudiate violence except in defense against initiated violence, then they will have peace and prosperity. An armed populace is a civil populace, usually. It depends on community morality. If the people of Cheran are committed to non-violence and only punish the initiation of violence, then they can each be sovereign, self-governing individuals. A new society organized by voluntary interactions will be a civil, peaceful, prosperous lifestyle that attracts people from all over. But it must resist reverting back to violence.

@sunset6325
@sunset6325 5 лет назад
@@helloturtle3749 You don't understand the procedure, the population of this town is reported at 16,250 people (officially 12.5k). 16,250 is 1/6.15th of 100,000 meaning each murder is multiplied by 6.15 and then divided by 7 (the amount of years) to find the murder rate per 100,000 residents. Do the math, 9 x 6.15 = 55.35 - 55.35 divided by 7 = 7.9, if we use the official number the rate becomes 10.25 per 100,000 per year.

I lived in Mexico for a while and what I was told by teachers and friends is that Mexico's system of government is in many ways a continuation of the colonial government system established by Spain - a system that intended the drain out resources for the benefit of the colonizing power and supporting elites, while doing very little for the local population. Cherán's example seems as an grassroots attempt to finally break that vicious, foreign implemented cycle, and replace it with a system that is build around the values and desires of the local, indigenous population. I will very much be looking forward to future news from Cherán's. Cherános ¡les deseo buena suerte!

What many in the US don't understand is that while there are some cartels that don't even reach a count of 100, the larger ones have like the one who was in control of my family's home state reached up to 200,000 members. +Sun. You clearly havent read or understood much of the real Sun Tzu if you think this is a good thing. In most cases these type of "neighborhood militias" become what they at first were fighting. Which is why there is always a huge disarmament of such groups after a war, regardless of which side they were on. Gangland USA is another example of neighborhood groups turning to crime once their main task is done. Because then they suddenly realize they have what those they were fighting did. A group that can be used to enforce their will on others...

I'm going to do something similar in a different part of Mexico. If you guys are actual down, I'll take you to my house over there where I grew up for a bitt, we can make a change for Mexico because we can cross the border without a problem. My parents abandoned Mexico like many other families who left there own families to suffer in Mexico. Then we were born and the pachucos came to be. We protected our Raza and even got down with the US navy. Following generations of Mexican-Americans were born and slowly changed the ways of a pancho and now known as a Sureno. Society made us this way and they discriminate just cause we Mexicans, so why put up with their shit when we have our own Tierra y Liberta I want to go home to Estado Unidos Mexicanos where we actual belong, imagine if your parents didn't abandoned Mexico nothing but Mexicans were you could of been born . La Raza wasn't scared to protest against ICE in LA while wearing a Mexico's shirt a place that they abandoned because they were scared to do something and chose for a better life but are willing to fight and die for the United States. I love La Raza but I dont want to die for the ones in the United states but I have too fuckin culos . I would rather die in Mexico with the ones making a change Viva La Revolución. White supremacy is becoming active so stay safe and we'll see who's actual down for La Raza when shit hits the fan. 🖐

@Eliseo Guadarrama If you’d like some aid from a gringo with explosives knowledge and a killer deadeye let me know. I’ve seen too many good people die at the hands of corrupt police all over the world. I think we’ve all had enough of the common man being beaten down by globalized business and authoritarian governments. This fight goes beyond race and politics for me. My friend from San Miguel de Allende was killed by a group of men in rural Guanajuato a year ago while he was delivering food and medicine to a dying village near an abandoned, toxic silver mine. They wanted the supplies for their gang to sell and were perfectly fine screwing over and killing anyone who stepped out of line. The feds didn’t do shit (shocker) and now his mother has to visit his grave to lay flowers every moths. No parent should have to bury their child. So when the time comes you bet your ass I’ll support the movement in any way I can. A life is only worth as much as the good you do living it.

Cause if it was the engine, why would run with it in the first place? People, people are the problem. Profiteering, extortion, and manipulation are the problems that cause the degredation of Democracy. It is a system that provides openess but if not tended with correctly and with the interests in the peoples in mind. It can rue into degrading against the will of the people. One cannot presume what is right, without understanding the mandate of everyone involved. Those that helped tear down the Berlin Wall didnt come this far to see Democracy fall short.

Luis De Jesus "People are the problem" Exactly and people are the most important part of a democracy. Democracy puts too much power in people. People who dont care about politics, who aren't educated on politics. People become like sheep and vote for who ever offers them the most free things and will not vote on principles but materials. People are easily manipulated, which is why it is normal for a leader to rise up out of a group. Democracy can work easily in a small group. But anything bigger and it always fails. I meant the issue of half the American population mistreating, slurring, and attacking Mexican citizens, and other South American refugees at every chance they get. Then, there was the recent travesty of families being separated at the border. You believe there'd be no conflict, whatsoever, between Americans fleeing South and the native population that has many reasons to have something to say about accepting Americans into their communities?

There are a lot of potential issues. Imo the model might work well for communities with a strong sense of unity, and more tolerating of eachother views. You should try to find a video of how the US election changed throughout history, at the beginning it was more or less something like this. Having your votes be transparent can introduce peer pressure and discrimination by making your political views be known. Voting differently from your family, neighbors, etc.

More and more Mexicans have begun to take a stance against our corrupt government that's controlled by the narco carteles, I know we're still a long way off of any major changes in the country, but this sets a precedent that it is possible. The examples I gave were leftist. Neoliberals are nowhere near leftists. I’d even say they’re more right wing. Being or pretending to be culturally left in order to benefit corporations doesn’t make them left leaning centrists. Social democrats are center-left. Your second reply is correct though.
