The Micro Mitsu Road Trip - 1,000 miles in a JDM Kei Car!

Thank you Tom, and thank you Duncan Imports and Classic Cars! The Dangan is a kick in the pants! It really is an unusual, cool, and capable little car. 45mpg, wow! It definitely turned the fun level of the shootout up a notch for me, and just like my turbo Elantra, it's as old as the DSM/Evo/GT-R Shootout itself! As a Virginian, it's inevitable that I'll be visiting Christiansburg to see more!

From Japan, this Dangan is a late model. I was on the initial model. It is very nostalgic. I remember that the former model was more high speed type than the latter type and it rotated tightly at 10000 rpm. Thank you for seeing and having fun.

My favorite kei car from the GT games was the Wagon R RR, also cause it looks like a mini chevy astro van😄👍

Always loved these, great video and you're very right saying you could daily it, I daily a daihatsu Mira avanzato tr-xx and they're amazing... Unless you like to carry your friends about, in which case it can be a bit cramped

I own 2 kei cars ( miras) both swapped with engine from daihatsu move l9rs n yrv 1300cc NA. Go for the TURBO.. its quieter n smoother than the NA version.. Nice review.. tq.

Those Japanese Kei cars, particularly the 'hot hatches', were something else, then and now. My favorite hot hatch Kei will always be the Honda City Turbo II, with the Motocompo option. Great vid, Tom.

Watching this Video really makes me miss my Evo. Didn't want to sell but had to, best car I have ever owned. 45mpg's on this car isn't bad at all. I remember my 91 civic hatchback I bought new in 91 got 46 on the hwy with a 4 spd. Was the base model. Bigger than this car, but fun too. Great Video, brought back allot of memories. Miss You Evo.....you may be gone, but NOT forgotten.

As having a kie car here in Australia (Daihatsu Centro) and daily it every day for 10 years and also road tripping it 1400kms multiple times, it was a blast. Comfy, zippy and great on fuel. I miss this car dearly (was written off by another car). And as a man of 6ft and 100kgs myself, the N/A 660cc 35horsepower engine with a three speed auto was slow yes, but not fear for my life on freeway slow lol. Great vid Tom, always enjoy them.

Can’t wait to see what Americans do with these 660cc engines... as the Japanese haven’t done too much that hasn’t cost a fortune! Proud owner of a 1995 Subaru Sambar Van ... I think the Malaysian are the biggest tuners of the kei cars, they drag race them and all but ye 660cc will have your head scratching until you lose it. Previously owned Suzuki Jimny, Daihatsu Mira, Suzuki Every turbo, Suzuki Lapin, Suzuki Wagon R.... the Sambar Classic 5 speed is almost as fun as the Jimny. Drove a Kei Works too and that was fun also. Honda Beat is awesome... nearly bought an AZ-1 but missed by a fee minutes

Jafro and Tom turbo garage is too much awesomeness in one webisode. I'm waiting for the world to implode.

The best thing about K cars is that because of the weight the power to weight ratio is high therefore fuel consumption is lower than a bigger car and handling is better. A friend of mine has a micra super turbo(1988 model) and drives it everywhere including long trips and it's not missed a beat since new(Except for the standard- tyres, oil,servicing ) nice video on the light weight legends of Japan

at 14:56 just seeing the Smart Car in the background as size reference just makes you actually see how small this Mitsu is really compared to modern common "American" micro's.

It's the Mitsubishi Minica Dungan ZZ. I also have a K-Car. By the way, what is engraved on the spokes of the genuine Minica Dungan wheel imitates a valve, and since it is engraved on all five spokes, it represents a 5-valve engine. Most of the K-Car engines at that time were 4-valve engines, so it seems that MITSUBISHI was particular about it. My K-Car is a late model of Suzuki Alto Works 4th generation (HA22S). The difference from the previous model is the improved model that canceled the unfinished electronic throttle and VVT with many failures at that time and returned to the previous 3rd generation engine (all aluminum block and timing chain K6A type).

Then, doing the standard bolt-ons (intake, exhaust, intercooler, maybe injectors if needed, WMI, maybe a turbo upgrade, etc.) to optimize the potential - nothing too crazy. Super cool seeing Jafro and Joe in this vid, too. It's awesome that y'all are buds IRL.
