I’ve been to both Mitad del Mundos, the tourist one, and the real one. I took my kids there back in 2010, shortly after I arrived in Quito. We did the water spin trick and and balance game too with the egg. Pretty amazing. Have also been to the Teleferico. I really felt the altitude there, especially when I walked up the inclined walkway.
INCREDIBLE ! Hard to believe that the indigenous people live in the center of the (dead) volcano ! Having lived most of our lives in Florida, mainly in metro areas, this video was a refreshing breath of FRESH AIR ! Sad to see the young people leaving for the "big city" - the accumulated knowledge of the older generation will probably be lost forever.
Nicely presented video guys. I'm starting the house pack now. Coming for an exploratory trip next year to see if Ecuador's to be my retirement. The spin directions in the sinks are the same as ocean currents. I believe it's due to the higher earth's linear speed of rotation at the equator vs lower speed moving toward the poles. The arguments are skin friction of the vessel (including the ocean floor) or simply speed differential. My personal opinion is it's a combination of both.
Hi Guys, thanks for your videos. Hired Edwin recently on drive from Cuenca to Olon / Montanita and what a pleasant experience. Great conversations, easy albeit quite a long ride, but all in a great experience with lots of local color added by Edwin. Highly recommend his service and hopefully hook up with him again on future visits.
Enjoyed your tour of Volcano Pululahua and it’s beautiful surroundings. You did a great job of showing us the true center of the world. All the experiments that were done at the center of the world at Museo de Sitio Intinan were fascinating. I cannot wait to see what we will see in your next video!
Dad one time told a friend back in the states that a compass pointed east-west on the equator. We stopped at Mitad del Mundo once and he put a magnet just out of frame and took a couple pictures and mailed one to his friend
Thank you for posting this video. Your experience of viewing water drain in different directions on either side of the equator is a real phenomenon. It is called the Coriolis Effect much more prevalently observed in the weather phenomenon. Hence the reason why you will not find hurricanes on the equator-regions. A different story for volcanic eruptions! The Coriolis Effect is named after French mathematician and physicist Gaspard-Gustave de Coriolis. Technically you can make the water swirl in either direction depending on other forces acting on the body of water like placement of jets in a toilet bowl. However free body of water with no other external forces follow Coriolis effect. Thanks for informative video.
There were shrunken heads in a glass aquarium at the old Children’s Museum in Nashville when I was growing up in the 1960-70s, probably been there for generations. Both my brother and I remember them from school field trips - a dim, old building with hairy cave man dioramas, low ceilings and spooky stairways. Now, of course, all the museums are bright, sanitary and wide open, with the generic atmosphere of an airport or doctor’s office.
I love your videos that show the beautiful countryside of Ecuador. That view of the volcano was amazing. I could sit and stare for hours. I remember driving from Quito to Cuenca and how many stops I made just to take in the views. I visited La Mitad del Mundo but didn't make it to the "real" location. Thanks for sharing.
I paid very close attention to how he did it. The sink was level and facing the same direction in all 3 tests. He poured the water in and let it stabilize before pulling the plug straight up. The plug was a simple rubber stopper. It was the same bucket of water used for all 3 tests. There was no wind. The weirdest test was the one right on the line. It had no rotation at all. It just went straight down. I’ve never seen that before 🤯
What a fun video! Another beautiful place to visit in Ecuador. Ever wonder how they know where that EXACT line is? Thanks for sharing the amazing view!
Wow! Love the place. Still thinking retirement btw Ecuador and Colombia. Unfortunately, Colombia has changed a lot in the last year. Thank you both for very uplifting videos....I'm still suffering here in California ( just a joke) but I would rather be in a less expensive place. Thanks again❤!
There isn’t nearly a large enough size on the sink to create the Coriolis effect. He was able to create the illusion by placing the sink on slightly unlevel ground which has much more effect.
You know that ocean currents go in opposite directions in the northern and southern hemispheres. In the north they go clockwise and in the south they go anti-clockwise and rivers in the southern hemisphere generally flow north like the Nile. I enjoyed the video and that is such a beautiful place. Happy holidays to you both!
Great video, guys! We went to Pululahua and Mitad del Mundo on our exploratory trip in 2017. I balanced the egg, but Pat didn't! 😆 I'd really love to go back when it's not so overwhelming. It's so beautiful! As usual, perfect music and you looked at all the things! ❤❤
That Coriolis effect "demonstration" has the same educational value as a card trick. The effect is strongest at 45° N and 45° S and zero at the poles and equator. The effect is significant in large weather systems and is detectable under carefully controlled laboratory conditions, but not a few paces from the equator.
Challenge and Prediction: Take the circle-the-drain guys out in a remote field on the equator. Bring your GPS instrument for verification. Have them use their basin and bucket to locate the equator in that field. They won't be able to.
@@AmeliaAndJP It's so funny how this issue has become a bit controversial! If it actually happens and it's not a trick, then cool! If it's a trick, then it's still cool because you were interested in it and not staring at your smartphone back home. Get out and enjoy life like Amelia and JP everybody!
I'm curious, we all know the weather in the southern hemisphere is opposite of that in the northern hemisphere. So, we are going into winter now, in the north. Since Equador is on the Equator, what season is approaching now? Will it get warmer over the next few months?
At the equator line we don't have the 4 seasons. If you're coming to the mountains like Quito and Cuenca, be dressed for summer and spring/fall weather. If you plan to do serious mountain climbing, you might need winter gear. If you visit the Amazon or the coast, be dressed for hot and humid tropical weather. You might need a light sweater for the evenings. You should ALWAYS wear sunscreen because the sun rays are direct here and you can still get sunburned on a cloudy day.
Thanks for sharing your adventures there. Looks like a really cool place. I'm wondering how the trip would be on a motorcycle from PA. I'll have to see what Google maps shows. Need some road trips after retirement.
Pan American Highway!! Book ‘Obsessions Die Hard: Motorcycling the Pan American Hwy’ and documentary ‘Long Way Up’ (actually, any of the Ewan McGregor & Charlie Boorman docs are freaking amazing and make you want to hit the road yesterday)! I’ve taken long trips in my FJ but don’t know enough about repairing it myself to leave the US since I always go solo. If I were taller and could handle a bigger bike, I’d definitely consider hitting a trip like that on a motorcycle, something like a Honda that’s easy to find parts for all over the world. What an exciting idea, hope you do it!
Hello Amelia And JP. Enjoyed the vistas of Nature as it is. Ecuador as a whole is a natural wonderland. The coast, the mountains and the Amazon. The capital city of Quito is celebrating it's 487th anniversary. Not bad for a land that has basically been a crossroads for Incas (Northern Capitol) to the Spanish. Hope to see more videos from Quito. Perhaps on the modern architecture that contrasts with the Old Colonial City Center. ----Cheers! Eddy from Hollywood.
😂 Guys, these equator games are just that - the games, made for tourists, to have some fun. There's no proof of anything there. It is impossible to observe different direction of rotation on a small quantity of water. That one as well as the others are just tricks. There's no straight line of equator. You can ask anyone who knows a bit more about the science. However, Javier did the great job and you had a lot of fun and that's what is the most important. 😊
According to the National Geographic Society, "The Coriolis force is strongest near the poles, and absent at the Equator." So the water drain spin was just a trick. But fun to watch anyway :)
What a nice and super fun video, excellent job!!!! Amelia, I love your mascara, did you buy it in Otavalo? I am going to Quito on January and would love to buy one like yours.
Love your love. Love your vids……can you do another Q&A? My questions: how did u meet, how long have you been together, do you have kids, did you have homesickness when you first moved to Ecuador? TY
You forgot to clarify that half the world is in the wrong location because the French geodesic mission could not calculate half the world well. And the most important thing is that the ancient Quitu-Cara native people already knew exactly where the parallel 0 (where the egg and the walking thing take place, that place is called Catequilla) is located long years before the arrival of Europeans to America.
Quite advanced for the tribes of south America. So glad I was born in the 21st century and all the conveniences but we still have a problem with getting along with others and violence is no better in certain areas than 300 years ago. Goodness and evil will always be in certain humans.
I’m not sure if you guys have ever covered it but where are you both from originally? Be kind of interesting to know where you both grew up and moved on to Ecuador!!
Definitely a place and people to visit... Really, really want to meet these people... They always have so much knowledge.... Think I could/can listen to them for hours/days/months.. 😊
Hello, congratulations for your videos, you can make a video of Puerto Quito, it is 2 hours from Quito and there are very interesting projects, I would like to know your opinion..Blessings.
Thanks for your informative and fun presentations on Ecuador. I was wondering if you would be aware of a site to help select locations based on criteria such as elevation, temperature, rainfall, etc. Of course, as you present, there are two perspectives of finding the best place to live and also visit. The high elevations are beautiful but probably too cool and wet for being outside long periods of the day. Thanks!
@@drherediat Thank you Diego for the kind reply, it is very much appreciated. These are two really nice recommendations for sure, very beautiful places! As an avid road cyclist, I am looking for a place that is relatively warm, with lots of Sunshine and less rain, and with an elevation of less than say 1000 meters. Maybe that means along the coast for the most part but I am curious what is there. Again, thank you for providing insights to your beautiful country.
I have been enjoying your living in Ecuador videos so much I have been contemplating retiring there in the next five years. I realized today that Ecuador is in the Ring Of Fire. How many earthquakes have you two experienced there ? Is this a real concern ?
hi guys loved this video if we were to move down there are the banks safe? or do you still have a account in the states if so how do youtransfer funds ti ecuador
Thanks Guys,...great video. I've been following you for almost 2-years, the sky appears in most of the video's to be overcast, very cloudy, almost all the time. Are my eyes playing tricks on me?
It is cloudy a lot, especially in the mountains and in Olón. It’s very sunny here in manta, but it’s hard to film in full sun because we have to wear sunglasses or we squint. And we get sunburned so we tend to film on cloudy days.
Clouds are a blessing when you live in a Sunny place. Having spent most of my life in the NE US, I longed for sunny days. Moved to FL in 2020 and though I do love sunshine. Cloudy days are great not getting cooked outside too much. I can only imagine how intense the sun is at the equator.
You can regard shrunken heads as creepy or cool....but the sobering reality is ,that that was once a living breathing human being who was basically murdered for whatever reason. It wouldn't be so novel if you thought that that person was someone's son, or father , or brother...which they probably were . The reality is, it's a pretty horrific way to end up.
I don't want to be annoying but since my head looks a lot like JP's, I think we both have mastered the "egghead" look, so that may be why he mastered the balancing of the egg so easily. (ducks head in case JP wants to throw an egg at me) lol
