It is sad to see her bid farewell... I almost spent my RU-vid time watching B747's. It made me sad & sometimes teary eyed watching retirement flights. Hopefully there will be a more hybrid Boeing 747's soon so that airlines will jump on it & grace once again the skylines and airports.

It's a shame the 747-8 isn't doing better in terms of orders. It's a gorgeous plane. The wings are so sexy :)
@spanieaj
@spanieaj 7 лет назад
The jumbos (4 engine) like the A380 and 747 are becoming dinosaurs because the wheel hub airline business model is obsolete. Smaller 2 engine planes flying out of smaller airports on dirrect destination routes are more profitable. At the very least, the 747 will carry on as a cargo plane. The original designers of the 747 at Boeing had the forethought to design the 747 with cargo carrying in mind in case it was a looser for passenger flights. I agree. The wing design (which is borrowed from the 787) is sexy.
@hansyolo9649
@hansyolo9649 6 лет назад
I think the A380 still is the aircraft of the future and ahead of it's time. It definitely needs a facelift, newer engines with better fuel consumption, and it needs to lose some weight, that's basically it. Because there is and will be a need for such a massive aircraft, airports all around the world will run into capacity problems, the value of landing slots will increase and of course airlines want to use that slot with the biggest aircraft they can get, and that's the 380 by far.
@romeogrigoras5221
@romeogrigoras5221 5 лет назад
But the engines got nothing in common with B747.
@MJLeger-yj1ww
@MJLeger-yj1ww 5 лет назад
@@hansyolo9649 Of course you are correct, Hans, but I can't help but miss the B-747, all models, I took that aircraft many times in my world travels, when it was rather in its infancy, about 1970 or so, I played the piano in the upstairs deck. That curved staircase was truly memorable, as were all my flights on that beautiful aircraft. I know the 747 has been largely relegated to cargo now, with a few foreign countries still flying some passengers, but it's been mostly replaced by the A-380 series now. I felt the very same way about the Concorde, which I had the pleasure of flying on from NY to Paris in about 1984 or 5 and took a 747 back home. It was a different era though, and sadly, the skies will never see those two beautiful birds again in the same capacity! With world population increasing by about 83 million every year, they need larger aircraft to accommodate all those passengers. Hubs are more prevalent now, with longer flights servicing those hubs and regional aircraft making the inter-city flights to them.
@hansyolo9649
@hansyolo9649 5 лет назад
@@MJLeger-yj1ww My comment seems ridiculous after Airbus scrapped the A380 but I still believe that Airbus missed opportunities and failed to adapt.

I was a Flight Attendant for a major International Airline for 38 years. I was lucky to be flying when the 747 just started in service in July 1970 until it was removed from service on the routes I flew to Europe in the late 1990's. I am the most grateful person you can ever imagine.

Great 747 compilation! One thing to note is that the inboard LEADING-EDGE FLAPS (between the fuselage and inboard engine) and the MIDDLE LEADING-EDGE FLAPS (between the two engines) RETRACT immediately after TOUCHDOWN (by deployment of the thrust reversers), but the OUTBOARD LEADING-EDGE FLAPS DO NOT RETRACT. On the 747-8, one inboard section of the outermost LEADING EDGE FLAPS also RETRACTS at this time; but not on earlier versions of the 747. As can partially seen after @15:50, these two sets of leading-edge flaps extend once again, after the thrust reversers are stowed. I've read that this occurs for two reasons: 1. to protect the leading edge flaps from the turbulent reverse thrust forces; 2. to further reduce lift on the wing to put more weight on the wheels for more effective braking. Also, as another viewer noted: the nose gear- mounted taxi light comes on after the main wheels touch down , but I believe that the taxi light switch in the cockpit is already in the "on" position and the weight-on-wheels [squat] switch completes the circuit to turn on the taxi light (not the pilot(s) turning it on, as they are occupied with landing the plane). Conversely, it would turn off as the aircraft lifts off during takeoff. This would occur to increase the life of the taxi light bulb and reduce heat in the nosewheel well, caused by a bulb left on.

Ah I didn´t recognized that untill I saw your comment! Interesting! But I think it turns on by itself directly at touchdown, What I´ve seen from inside cockpit landing videos (maybe a couple of hundred different landings) , pilots do not press anything at the overhead panel when they´re fully concentrated on landing safely at that speed. Taxi lights turns on by itself is maybe something special with 747! :D

Those -8s are the most beautiful aircraft in the skies. I flew Lufthansa into JFK and was blown away by how quiet she was. There’s nothing else like her and it’s so sad she hasn’t sold very well. I wish BA would’ve purchased a few after they leased a -8Freighter but once the lease was done they gave her back to her owners and I’ll tell you what.....she looked beautiful in BA livery.

Be careful when you fly China Airlines. One passenger recently reported that it looks as though the Chinese Commie government has placed spy ware on the back of each seat on the plane. It looks so small that one who is not looking for it could miss it. it looks like a microscopic camera on the back of the seat in front of you, about the same size as the head of thumbtack. Be careful what you read or talk about with the passenger next to you. You are being watched and listened to by the Chinese government, when you fly China airlines. The same applies with any airline out of North Korea.
