Kevin Pope known in the calypso world as “The Mighty Duke” was born in Point Fortin south Trinidad in 1932, but his Father, Mother and brother were from St. Vincent and he went to school in St. Vincent for some time. Pope was a former school teacher and oil field worker he left Shell Oil to pursue his calypso singing career in the 1950s. After singing for a short time in Point Fortin he began singing in San Fernando at the Southern Brigade tent. In 1964 he relocated to Port of Spain and performed with the Original Young Brigade.
A songwriter and artist who horde his craft from the greats of the Lord Kitchener, Roaring Lion and Tiger.
Duke started his calypso career in the late fifties and by 1963 he won his first National king contest and went on to win it again in 1964 and 1965.
In 1968 Duke was about to create history by winner the National Monarch title with the hit songs “What is Calypso”, and “Social Bacchanal” then in 1969 he won it again with “Black is Beautiful” and “One foot Visina” it did not stop there in 1970 he won it again with his hits “See through” and “Brotherhood of man”.
Duke when on to win the monarch a forth and final time in ‘71 with two new hits “Mathematical formula for peace” and “Melvie and Yvonne”. It did not stop there for the mighty Duke who continue to bring hit after hit and in 1978 won a road march title with the hit song “Thunder”. Duke has over 25 album to his credit.
