Brilliantly played- the articulation is absolutely impeccable in this acoustic, and the tempo is on point. What a fun piece too!

It takes years and years of discipline to be able to play like this. And people get stuck on what kind of detail things the organist wears? Looking at the language most complainers use here, I bet they're never able to play like this.

I cannot think of torments bad enough for whoever rediscovered Vivaldi's Four Seasons but this Toccata is phenomenal and its popularity today owes a lot to the advocacy of the late Jane Parker-Smith. Her recording in Memmingen is still my go-to version but Mr Franke is also superb.
@ianmarriott1124
@ianmarriott1124 Год назад
I'd no idea Jane Parker-Smith had passes away. I met her at the 50th Anniversary of the founding of my choir the Bach Cantamus Choir of London by (Dr) Peter Macdonald. Where Ms Parker-Smith was guest of honour. She regailed us with stories of the organ world, and when Peter introduced me to her as an ex organ builder and told her who I had been apprenticed to. She said " Oh him! He accused me of breaking one of his organs! Twerp ( not exactly what she said lol) it was great to meet another famous organist, but Peter was a good friend and probably the finest organist I have ever met. What he could do with a very small one manual organ was bloody amazing. One of our choir members sadly died of spinal cancer, and Peter played for her funeral. It was small one manual instrument with I think 5 stops and he made it sound like a cathedral organ! I went upstairs to the organ loft afterwards and could not believe what I saw as an instrument as opposed to what my ears witnessed. Pure magic and a fitting tribute to the lady who we had lost

For some reason, my ears can process the individual notes better when I can actually see them being played at the same time. One of the better recordings of this for me, for that reason. The notes aren't a melded together mess like some others. Nicely done.

In short 29 now grew to 33 that cant play a organ. It's difficult. Being a house organ player now restoring two church organs at the same time, don't understand the technical aspects of an organ. This piece was masterfully played... understanding the organ and aspects other people don't. To perform such a piece in a church with huge acoustics to keep in mind when controlling the swells and understanding its environment, is a art only a good organist can understand. The organist not only need to know the music, but need to learn and understand the instrument. The technical aspect of what open and close, the draw bars and where they are situated in the ranks behind the organ. Well done... You have my like!

years & years ago I had a recording of the Bach toccata in d minor played on a number of historical and period organs; it was noted that the A on some 17th & 18th century organs was a whole tone or semi-tone lower (flat) to A at 440 which we are used to; and of course the Wagner/Bayreuth A set to around 456 or 460 is famous (and difficult)

Brilliantly played. AND, a composer who understands that the 32' pedals in the lowest octave take longer to sound because of their size so therefore gives them note-length sufficient to allow that. Thank you (Mr.?) Lanquetuit.

I've been studying a lot of French Romantic organ music and I'm mystified by some of the pedal writing for 32' registration - sometimes they don't even "speak" in the 16-note runs.

It's a sad world we live in today!! A lot of bitchy pseudo would be musicians who would rather find anything negative to say about this performance than to recognize the obvious. The man played the hell out of this piece so just recognize his talent for what it is and move on. If you harbor resentment or jealousy because of his gifts then just go somewhere and practice. Maybe you too will get there in time!! Thank you for posting this piece and performance. Loved every not of it!!

The nature of posting a musical solo performance like this is going to draw those who critique - both the professional and amateur alike. Particularly with organ music, you will see comments from other organists who have performed this piece and question some of the registration changes (i.e. the three stop-pulls between the final tonics...it's a preference of course - I would have used one stop-pull before the first of the ending tonics and leave it there, which is more commonplace with French Romantic music.
